    joinedtogetherunderthebanneroftheWhitestodefeat
    theBolsheviks.

    Meanwhile,theWhitesweredisunited,andcouldnotagreeon
    theiraimsorcoordinatetheirattacks.

    TheCzechLegionwereagroupofCzechprisonersof
    warwhoescapedandtravelledupanddowntheTrans
    SiberianrailwayattackingtheBolsheviks.
    Britain,FranceandAmericasentsometroops,andlots
    ofmoneyandsupplies.
    GeneralMiller,withhelpfromtheAmericansandBritish,
    capturedArchangelinlate1918andsetupatsarist
    governmentthere.
    AdmiralKolchakhad100,000men,theentiretreasury
    ofNicholasII,andmilitarysuppliesfromAmerica,Britain
    andFrance.Inearly1919,headvanced,buthisofficers
    weremoreinterestedincocaineandvodkathanbattle,
    andhisarmiescollapsedwhentheBolshevikscounter
    attacked.KolchakwascapturedbytheCzechs,and
    handedovertotheBolsheviks,whoexecutedhim.
    GeneralYudenichhad16,000men,tanksandtheoffer
    of100,000Finnishtroops.TheFinnswenthomewhen
    KolchakrefusedtopromiseFinlandindependence.
    YudenichattackedinOctober1918hegotsocloseto
    Petrogradthathismencouldseethetrainspullingoutof
    thestation.ButthenTrotskyturnedupandinspiredthe
    people100,000RedGuardsandordinaryworkers
    armedthemselveswithriflesandfoughtoffthetanks.
    Yudenichresignedandwentintoexile.
    GeneralDenikin.InJuly1919,Whitearmies,numbering
    150,000soldiersandledbyGeneralDenikinand
    GeneralWrangel,attackednorthwardsfromtheBlack

    Seaandgottowithin250milesofMoscow.Butthenthey
    ranoutofmoney.DenikinquarrelledwithWrangel.
    UkrainiansrefusedtofightwithRussians.TheWhite
    Terrorwassoterriblethatthepeasantsflockedtojoin
    theReds.InOctober1919,theRedscounterattacked
    anddrovethemback.TheWhitesdefeatedand
    pennilessbecameapoormassofnakedhumanity
    fleeingforitslife'.DenikinescapedtoFrance.
    GeneralWrangelmadealaststandintheCrimea,but
    wasdefeatedin1920.

    Union.

    Afterwinningthecivilwar,astheBolshevikscaptured
    thedifferentareasoftheformerRussianEmpire,they
    organisedthemintosocialistrepublicsgovernedbya
    sovietegtheUkraine.
    In1922,Leninorganisedtheseintoaunitedstatethe
    UnionofSovietSocialistRepublics(USSR).
    In1924,theUSSRagreedaconstitutioneachRepublic
    sentrepresentativestoaCongressofSovietsin
    Moscow.TheCentralExecutiveCommitteeofthe
    Congressbecamethesupremegoverningbodyofthe
    state,andthemembersofthePresidiumoftheCentral
    ExecutiveCommitteeranthegovernmentinbetween
    meetingsoftheCongress.
    OnlyonepartywasallowedtheCommunistParty.
