They didn’t look anything like the ‘square, cold PCs | was familiar with. In fact, they were an assortment of neon-colored, alien- ‘shaped stations that seemed to either come from the future or from the mind of Willy Wonka. How was | supposed to take computer programming seriously? After one week of using these “iMacs,” not only was | taking them seriously, | was starting to love their unique features. | didn’t know it then, but | was indirectly participating in one of the greatest comebacks in business history. Steve Job's Apple was back on its feet, and it was ready to start sprinting, Our first issue of iPhone Life When Steve Jobs spoke to the graduating class of Stanford in 2005, he left them with this final message; “Stay hungry, stay foolish” This is my first issue as Editor in Chief of iPhone Life magazine, and it's the first issue published by our new, young company called Mango Life Media. The Mango Life Media team consists of David Averbach, Publisher and CEO; Raphael Burnes, CTO; Hal Goldstein, Senior Editor and Founder; and myself. We're taking Steve's words to heart, and we're going to stay hungry and foolish. We're also immensely grateful for the support and trust we've received from Hal Goldstein, who has been publishing niche tech publica- tions for 26 years, and Richard Hall, who has been the Managing Editor alongside Hal for 23 years. They have laid down a clear, consistent, and successful path that makes our hunger and foolishness possible. All of our future success will build ‘upon what they have built, and it will be a testament to their principles and vi- sion. This publication will continue to publish entertaining, useful, and visually engaging content written for users, by users. Exciting times are ahead! ‘What's in this issue? This is probably one of the most popular issues of the year, and it’s also one Of the most fun to put together. This year’s Buyer's Guide features the best of everything from every category of apps and accessories. It's the perfect issue for holiday shopping because you'll see only the cream of the crop. A lot of people wanted an iPhone § with a newly redesigned shape and a bigger screen. If this is what you were expecting, then you may wish to wait until next year, although it means youl have to endure another fresh raund of wild iPhone 5 rumors. Reason #2:You got an iPhone 4 this year. If you just got an iPhone 4 this year, then you probably aren't in ‘a hurry to upgrade. The bottom line is that you won't miss out ‘on much if you don't upgrade. The iPhone 4 (and the iPhone .3GS) wil stil get iOS 5 and iCloud, which is where the majority Of the new features and benefits come from The new Se Asan combines aif iteligencewithnatwal language understanding REASONS TO BUY IT Reason #1: Siri Assistant Ifyou wanta personal assistant on-call 24/7, then you may wish to get the iPhone 4S. The ability to understand natural human language has long been a barrier for computers because they ‘can't understand context and implied meaning. Ths is an im- ressive and exciting new feature that integrates with the rest of ‘your mobile device; it’s worth the price alone. However, the part ‘of me that has watched too many Terminator movies also gets 2 litle scared. ! don't want to fight Skynet anytime soon, Reason #2: You're ready for an upgrade If you've been holding onto an older version of the iPhone for longer than you should have, the iPhone 4Sis the way togo. I's a very nice jump in terms of hardware, usability, and familiarity All the apps you've purchased will carry over, and the same iOS interface you've come to love will be enhanced. Also, if you get the iPhone 4S now, it means you'll probably be ready for another upgrade when the iPhone 5S rolls around, THE FINAL VERDICT If you're absolutely ready for an upgrade, then the iPhone 4S won't disappoint. However if these new features don't do enough for you and you'e still holding out for the iPhone 5, then waiting ‘another six months to a year is @ reasonable decision. © ex equate theta Le mga Neos MEA nS 20 Busnes, and he wes an seats abu males, athe and ‘esting einer coed wt eens tensa psp Ing and ining ming es You an cea himstalersphone. om iPhone Life Buyers Guide 201117 A Closer Look at iOS 5 Everything we have been waiting for! by Todd Bernhard 2011 when Steve Jobs introduced iS 6, and 've been running the beta version on my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 ever since. Not that there isn't value. indeed iCloud is incredibly valuable. And thats the point. Once you have all of your content (contacts, apps, music, movies, books, etc:) on Apple's servers, why would you ever leave for a competing platform? Technologically and financially it's so much easier to stay in the Apple ecosystem. That's why iCloudis free, at least for the first few gigabytes. Apple needed to address notifications, and they did a solid job with the new iOS 5 Notification Center. For example, let's say you want to browse the reference category looking for apps that relate to music. All you do is select reference in the browse menu and then click on music in the same menu. As before, if you then want ta browse a different top-level category, such as photography, you'l first need to deselect the frst category. ‘The App Essentials section (macworld.com/apquide/collec- tions.htmi) may be the site's best feature It ists the top apps fora few hundred specific topics e.g, puzzle games, Facebook add-ons, get ajab, racing games, multimedia apps, etc.) ‘The site also lets you view just the iPad-compatible apps. Their directory is similar to the App Store, with familiar catego- ries such 2s books, business & finance, education, etc. But, un- like the App Store, it also includes extensive subcategories. The recommendations area of the site recommends apps in each Of the categories, as well as giving the latest user-contributed lists in each category (for exemple, “6 Essential Small Business Productivity Apps”) The Lists area may be the most impressive part of the site, ‘Again it presents you with an App Storedike directory, and in ‘each category you'll find curated lists of apps put together by us- ers. For example, click on the travel category and it returns 120 lists that people have made, such as “My Top Five Tavel Apps,” “Favorite Business Travel Apps,” and "Southeast Asia Travel apps” In each category, an Appolicious editor has selected the ‘most useful lists, and those are presented at the top. ‘Appolicious also has a very helpful selection of Best Apps lst, such as “Best free iPad apps of al ime” A social networking ‘component lets you get app recommendations from friends and cothers who have used the app ‘Phone Application List, (iphoneapplicationiist.com) shows you video reviews, ‘twitter mentions, blog posts and text reviews for the app you're looking for iPhone Application List has an interesting approach to search for apps. That brings up 430 search results. | can then sort those by Price, which then puts the free ones at the top. (f | click on Price again it puts the most ‘expensive ones at the top.) However, there doesn’t seem to be any way to search for an ‘exact match, sof you sort by price, for example, the top results include many apps that are simply calculators. However, you ‘can sort by relevance, so that the top results ae tipelated. You can also sort by Update, which returns a list of the apps most recently updated, or by name, which simply puts the search results in alphabetical oder. In addition to searching and browsing, a good way to find apps is to browse lists of apps that people have identified as being the best. A couple of the websites mentioned above have lists (of best apps. Here are some additional sites. ‘AppCraver (www appctaver.com) has alist of best apps for each ‘of the App Store catagories.
