Minerals Science Lesson Plan
Lesson 1, Day 1 and Day 2
Daily Topics Day 1 Nutrition, Empty Calories, Vitamins and Minerals
Day 2 Foods and the Vitamins and Minerals They Contain
Standards:
Express data in a variety of ways by constructing illustrations, graphs, charts,
tables, concept maps, and oral and written explanations as appropriate (SI-E-A5)

Describe what the human body needs to grow and be healthy (LS-E-A1)
Describe the relationship between eating habits and maintaining a healthy body
(LSE-A6) 43.
Identify a meal that includes representatives from each group of the food pyramid
(LS-E-A6)

Objectives:
The students will show a ninety percent understanding of vitamins and minerals,
how they function in the body and which foods, especially fruits and vegetables,
contain them by correctly organizing facts and examples and creating a Prezi with
the information.

Procedures:
Day 1 30 min lesson

1 Teacher will show PowerPoint presentation and You Tube video at end of
presentation.

Day 2

45 min group work

1 Teacher will go over requirements for the Prezi presentations the


students will create.
2 Students will create their Prezi presentations in pairs. Each pair will be
at a computer with Internet access.
3 Students will be given the rubric to make sure they have all necessary
information in their presentation.

Prerequisite Skills:
An understanding of how to make a Prezi and concept mapping.

Materials:
Teacher Computer with Internet access

students to research their information for their Prezi presentation:

Student Computers with Internet access (Enough for 2 to a computer)

Special Needs: Pair a special needs student with a regular education


student so they can help the special needs child.
Non-Native English Speaker: Have them focus their research on the two
kidshealth.org websites that have audio that goes along with what is written
on the web pages.
Gifted Students: Have them also research 3 of the B vitamins.
