Statistics Project
Term Three Math Assessment - Fitness
Introduction
In Physical Education this year, data has been collected about your personal
fitness. In this mathematics project you will be analysing this data to determine the
area of fitness in which Grade 7 students have improved the most throughout the
two terms. You will also use this data to answer a question about fitness. Finally,
you will be individually designing a survey and collecting data to create the perfect
sports uniform for Grade 7 students.

Which Area of Fitness Grade 7 Amber Students

Have Improved the Most
TASK ONE

Aim
To find out which area Grade 7 students have improved the most in fitness this year. The
data represents three areas of fitness namely the Bleep test, Sit and Reach and Sit Up.

Discussion of Results
The results show that the students in Grade 7 Amber have improved in the Sit and Reach tests.
However, in the Bleep Test and the Sit Up tests, pupils performance has declined by 20% and
12.5% respectively. This can be concluded by referring to the graphs above. They display blue
bars mainly taller than the green bars, representing a decline in performance for both the Sit Ups
and the Bleep test from term one. Another method of calculating this is by referring to the table
above displaying the collected data of pupils scores. The averages are at the bottom of the table
where the mean, median and modes are displayed. This strongly supports the decline in
performance for the Bleep and Sit Up tests and the improvement in the Sit and Reach
tests. For example, in the Sit Up columns (1 and 2) for the Median averages, Sit Up 1
column displays an average score of 20 while the Sit Up 2 column displays an average
score of 17.5. Sit Up 1 column represents term one while Sit Up 2 column represents

term two. Therefore, we can see a decline in performance for the Sit Ups as the score for term two
is lower than term one (2.5 points lower). We could also refer to the percentage differences
between terms one and two to determine whether students have overall improved or declined in
performance. For example, performance has declined in the Sit Up tests by in term two by 12.5%.
This is calculated by using the average scores and converting them to percentages. This
represents a decline in performance, confirming the theory. Therefore, based on these methods of
calculating whether students have improved or declined in performance, we can conclude that
students have improved the most in the Sit and Reach tests.

Using your Data to Answer a Question About Fitness

TASK TWO

Instructions Choose a statement or hypothesis (a prediction) about Grade 7 fitness from below or
create one of your own.
Hypothesis If someone is good at the bleep test they will also be good at sit-ups. I plan to find out
whether overall students based on the data collected were good at the sit-ups as well as the bleep
test. If this is true then the hypothesis is correct.

Calculations
Bleep Test - The lower the bleep test score, the less-good your stamina is.
Sit-Ups - The fewer sit-ups you do, the less developed your muscles are.
Therefore, the higher the score for both of these two subjects, the better the score is. Most
students for the Bleep Test can only score about 5 points. Excellent scores are at their highest, 11
points. So the range for good results should be between 5-11. For the Sit-Ups, most students
can do about a minimum of 14 sit-ups and the best at 31 sit-ups. Therefore, the range for good
results should be between at least 17-26 sit-ups (+ and - 5 points from the least and best scores).
Results Discussion For students in both terms, their average score was 5.575 for the Bleep Test.
This is slightly above the minimum score of 5 for a good score, but is still considered good. For
the Sit Up test, students average score was 18.75 which is also slightly above the minimum for a
good score but can still be considered good. Therefore, students in both terms can be considered
good at both sit-ups and the bleep test (Refer to the table below).

Average Scores for Terms One and Two

Bleep Test

Sit Ups

5.575

18.75
Good Rating

5-11

17-26

Conclusion Based on these results, we can conclude that students in Grade 7 Amber that were
good at their Bleep Test were also good at their Sit-Ups, proving the hypothesis correct.

Designing the Best Grade 7 Sports Uniform

TASK THREE

Instructions Imagine you are the manager of a sporting team of your choice (8 players or more).
You have been given the task of choosing the teams uniform. You need to consult your players in
order to find out their opinion on what would be the best design. Remember, you want your players
to be happy!
1.
Design a suitable survey to give to each player of your team in order to gather all of the
relevant information e.g. (colour, material. and more!)
2.
Display the data that you collected appropriately using frequency tables and the most
suitable graphs (e.g. bar chart, column graph, pie chart).
3.
Use your data to create an image/diagram of the uniform that you decide on for your team.
Label your diagram clearly, highlighting how you made your choices based on your data.

Aim In this task, I would like to consult my team members on their opinion on what would be the
most suitable uniform for our team. This will be based on a democratic survey-type-vote on what
they believe is the best uniform for our team.

Uniform Survey
My team consists of 10 members. My uniform survey consisted of five questions on the colour,
material, decorations and length of the uniform. The screenshots of the survey below show the
results.

Paragraph on Discussion of Results

After collecting survey results, I analysed and organised the data. After this process, I developed
the diagram above based on the data I collected from respondents. It expresses in a picture what
the majority of respondents would like as the sports uniform.
Conclusion
Generally, based on the results of the survey, the majority of respondents would like to have shortlength pants and shorts with international flags on the jersey. The results also show that
respondents prefer an attractive, international jersey which we can infer is due to respondents
internationalism and open-mindedness. We can also infer that respondents choose to wear light,
short-sleeved clothing that can enhance the efficiency of one while performing sports.
