Lesson Plan Assignment
Lesson Plan Subject: Character Development in Fiction
Subject/ Grade: Literacy Grade 3-5
Length of Class (how many minutes): 60 minutes
Learning Goal

Success Criteria
I can give examples of physical
and personality traits.

Illustrate and describe a

character based on physical
and personality traits.

I can illustrate those traits in a

drawing.
I can write a paragraph
describing my character traits.
I can compare and discuss my
drawing with my friends.

Brief Description of Overall Lesson:

Teacher starts by reviewing what was done yesterday. Goes over
what characteristics (physical and personality) are. In pairs,
students choose two physical and two personality traits that they
will use to individually illustrate their own character. They will also
individually write a paragraph describing their character. After
each student has drawn their picture of the character they can
compare with other students in their group. End with discussion
about the differences in the pictures.

Lesson Plan Assignment

Hook (Minds On): Length of time: 10 minutes

Circle game on carpet. Each student has to come up with a
positive trait about the person beside them that starts with the
first letter of their name. Ex. Creative Catie or Tall Tammy.
Encourage students to come up with a mixture of personality and
physical traits.

Delivery of New Ideas (what is your plan for delivering the

content or new ideas you want students to learn): Length
of time: 15 minutes
Remain on carpet. Teacher input. Review the concept of
characters in a fictional story. Ask the students to give examples
of traits. List the traits on chart paper organized based by
whether they are personality or physical traits (T-Chart). Explain
to students that in pairs they will come up with their own traits
and then individually draw a character and write a paragraph
describing it.
Learning Tasks: Length of time: 35 minutes
(Assessment as Learning (assesses as they go and
provides useful feedback to them as they work their way
through your success criteria):
Think/pair/draw: In pairs students will choose 2 physical and 2
personality traits. They will then draw their own characters using
the chosen traits.
Individually they will write a paragraph describing their character
using their chosen traits. At the end of the lesson students will
compare their drawing to their partners. In conclusion, the
teacher will ask students to share their drawings with the class

and will celebrate differences within the drawings, ex. look at how
two students who used the nice trait may have illustrated it
differently.
Assessment as Learning: Throughout the group and independent
work the teacher will circulate and provide feedback on the
chosen traits, their drawings, and their paragraph.
Instructional Strategies: Which (if any) of these strategies
are you going to use during your learning tasks? Why?
Think/pair/share
Debate
Coding for importance
think/pair/draw
Inside/outside circles
Four corners
Rapid writing
Graphic organizers
Individual/pair/group
Placemat
Jigsaw
work
Gallery walk
Numbered heads
Graffiti
Direct teaching
Learning centres
Role playing
Demonstration
Seminar panel
Hands-on activity
Notes:
Used think/pair/draw to foster collaboration and creativity. Also
wanted to have a mixture of individual, pair, and group work to
have a dynamic lesson and to accommodate different learning
styles. Used the hands-on activity of drawing to bring fun into
character building.
Assessment of Learning (most likely very small...toward
the end of class to be sure students can do what you set
out in the learning goal. Hint: look back to the verb you
used in your learning goal and find a way to get students
to do that action whether it be to identify or
articulate or explain etc.)

During final class discussion students will show their drawings and
explain how they used their traits in the drawings. Students will
also hand in their drawings and paragraphs so the teacher can
assess how well they understood the assignment.
