If we only bought things we needed, there would be enough for everybody. What do
we need? What you need depends on how old you are and your way of life. Rearrange
the list of things you can buy and put the things you think we most need at the top of
the list.
Si slo nos compramos cosas que necesitaramos, no habra suficiente para todos.
Qu necesitamos? Lo que necesitas depende de la edad que tengas y tu forma de
vida. Reordena la lista de cosas que puedes comprar y pon las cosas que crees que

If we dont need to buy so much, we dont need to work so much. We can take parttime jobs or reduce our working day from 8 hours to 6 hours. Some people are leaving
very well-paid jobs to live a healthier life in the countryside or a more exciting life
abroad. This is called downshifting. Parents can spend more time with their children
and the unemployed are given more opportunities to work.
Si no necesitamos comprar tanto, no necesitamos trabajar tanto. Podemos aceptar
trabajos a tiempo parcial o reducir nuestra jornada laboral de 8 horas y 6 horas.

Algunas personas estn abandonando trabajos muy bien remunerados para vivir una
vida ms sana en el campo o una vida ms emocionante en el extranjero. Esto se
llama "reduccin de marchas. Los padres pueden pasar ms tiempo con sus hijos y los
desempleados tienen ms oportunidades de trabajar.
If we start to respect saving the earth more than spending money, we will become
conservers. When we are conservers, we try to choose environmentally friendly
products which are durable and last a long time. We may find growing our own
vegetables or making our own clothes more rewarding than buying them.
Si empezamos a respetar la tierra ms que a gastar dinero, vamos a llegar a ser
"conservadores". Cuando somos conservadores, tratamos de elegir productos
respetuosos del medio ambiente que son duraderos y duran mucho tiempo. Podemos
cultivar nuestros propios vegetales o hacer nuestra propia ropa. Eso ser ms
gratificante que comprarlos.
What was the best thing you bought last week? / Cul fue la mejor cosa que
usted compr la semana pasada?
Could you choose from lots of different types? We like having a choice of what to
buy. People who buy things are called consumers. Consumers have choices. We
usually choose the colour, taste, smell or size of what we buy, but there are other
choices we can make. The following questions will help you to consider these
choices.
Podras elegir entre un montn de diferentes tipos? Nos gusta tener la opcin de qu
comprar. La gente que compra cosas se llaman consumidores. Los consumidores
tienen opciones. Solemos elegir el color, el sabor, el olor o el tamao de lo que
compramos, pero hay otras opciones que podemos hacer. Las siguientes preguntas le
ayudarn a considerar estas opciones.
Where was it made?/ Dnde se hace?
If you dont like the place it was made, you might decide not to buy that particular
product. A lot of people dont buy products from certain countries when they dont
like the way the country is run. Was it made in a factory or on a local farm? If the
product was unbelievably cheap, the people who made it might not have been paid
much.
Si no te gusta el lugar que se hizo, es posible que decidas no comprar ese producto en
particular. Mucha gente no compra productos de determinados pases cuando no les
gusta la forma en que el pas es gobernado. Fue hecha en una fbrica o en una granja
local? Si el producto era increblemente barato, la gente que hizo que tal vez no se le
ha pagado mucho.

Do you know? If a friend made it, you probably like it more and you will want to
keep it for a long time. If it was made by somebody who enjoyed making it, the

quality and the design are probably better. Or does it look like it might have been
assembled in a large factory?

durante mucho tiempo. Si fue hecho por alguien que disfrut haciendolo, la calidad y

There are children in Asia who make Santa Claus dolls for European children to play
with. The children who make the toys dont celebrate Christmas because they are not
Christian; they think of the dolls as work. Would it be better if the children in Europe
made their own Christmas dolls?
Hay nios en Asia que hacen muecos de Pap Noel para los nios europeos con los
que jugar. Los nios que hacen los juguetes es porque no celebran la Navidad, ya que
no son cristianos, sino que piensan en las muecas como trabajo. Sera mejor si los
nios en Europa hicieron sus propias muecas de Navidad?
What is it made from?/ De qu est hecho?
One of the places where we want to buy expensive luxuries is at the airports dutyfree shop. Next to the chocolate and cigarettes, there are beautifully shaped bottles
and compact boxes full of perfumes and creams which promise to make you look and
feel more beautiful. If you look at the ingredients you will find that the perfumes are
mainly alcohol and the creams are mainly made of petroleum!
Uno de los lugares en los que queremos comprar lujos caros es en la tienda libre de
impuestos del aeropuerto. Junto al chocolate y cigarrillos, hay botellas y cajas en
forma muy concisos, llenos de perfumes y cremas que prometen hacerte lucir y
sentirse ms bella. Si nos fijamos en los ingredientes de los perfumes son
principalmente el alcohol y las cremas se componen principalmente de petrleo!
Almost all products are sold in packaging. Some products have too much packaging,
creating more rubbish and using up resources. Some use recycled packaging, which is
better for the environment.
Casi todos los productos se venden en envases. Algunos productos tienen mucho
empaque, creando ms basura y el uso de los recursos. Algunos envases reciclados, lo
que es mejor para el medio ambiente.
Next time you go shopping, think about what you really need to buy. Dont deprive
yourself of things you like, but decide what you should buy before you go out, so that
you wont be influenced by advertisements or promotions. If it is more expensive to
buy goods which dont have much packaging and things which are more durable, buy
less. If you can choose to work less, decide which things you would like to make, do
or grow yourself. Even though you have less money, your life will become richer!
La prxima vez que vayas de compras, piensa en lo que realmente necesitas para
comprar. No te prives de las cosas que te gustan, pero decide lo que debes comprar

antes de salir, para que no te veas afectad@ por la publicidad o las promociones. Si es
ms caro comprar productos que no tienen mucho empaque y las cosas que son ms
durables, comprar menos. Si usted puede optar por trabajar menos, decide qu cosas
te gustara hacer, o hacer crecer a ti mismo. A pesar de que tendrs menos dinero, tu
vida ser ms rica!
