Looping is an Appropriate Educational Practice
Classroom instruction is most effective when teachers can follow the the
same students from grade to grade. Teachers become quite familiar with
students personalities, learning styles, strengths and weaknesses.
Instructional time will not be lost at the beginning of the year in getting to
know students and establishing classroom rules. A sense of community can
be established.
Looping is Not an Appropriate Educational Practice
Classroom instruction is impaired when teachers follow the same
students from grade to grade. The negative impact of an ineffective
or unfair teacher will be exacerbated. Students will not be
exposed to a range of perspectives and teaching styles.
New students may find it difficult to fit in. The logistics are more difficult
for school administrators to implement.

On the whole, looping is an appropriate and desirable educational practice.

One of the teachers most important goals in the classroom is to
establish a community of learners. As members of the community,
students internalize the rules and expectations of the classroom, and
they learn how to treat each other and their teacher with respect.
Looping fosters this sense of community, because it provides the
opportunity for teachers and students to forge deep connections with
each other. Over a period of years, students become more than just
classmates, and the teacher becomes more than just a voice
emanating from the front of the room. Just as the teacher learns more
about the students, so the students learn more about the teacher and
about each other, and the bonds of community are gradually forged.
This is an important experience for students, as they will be leaving the
classroom someday and entering the community of adult citizens.

The notion of community, as described here, is somewhat

abstract. Looping is advantageous in more concrete ways as
well. Teachers who have worked with their students for more than
a year do not need to spend much time at the beginning of each
year discussing the rules of classroom behavior. Moreover,
teachers understanding of their students is enriched by observing
them develop over time. Because teachers become so familiar
with their students, they are able to tailor their instruction
somewhat in light of each students personality, interests, and
strengths and weaknesses as a learner.

Thesis (restates):

Looping does have some potential disadvantages. If the teacher cannot foster a
sense of community in the classroom, modify instruction for individual students, or
otherwise provide a healthy learning environment, than students will end up worse
off than they would be after only having the teacher for one year. In short, looping
is an advantageous system only insofar as students move from grade to grade
with an effective teacher. Moreover, even the effective teacher will need to ensure
that students are exposed to a variety of perspectives, so that his or her own
views do not completely dominate instruction. Finally, looping is relatively difficult
from a logistical perspective, and thus it requires a sustained commitment from
school administrators. In spite of these potential limitations, looping is preferable
on the whole. With the right teacher in place, students can benefit on many levels
from sustained experience with that individual and with each other.

What specific characteristics do you think a person must
possess in order to be an effective teacher? Fully explain
each characteristic and show how the absence of each will
reduce effectiveness in the classroom.
What would be your thesis?
How would you construct your outline?
What transitions would you use?

THESIS: When I think of what specific characteristics a

person must possess in order to be an effective teacher, I
think of these characteristics: upstanding values, compassion,
and a thorough knowledge of his or her subject matter.
First, a person who becomes a teacher must keep in mind
that they are a role model to the children in their midst.
An effective teacher must also be compassionate.
Finally, if a person is going to be an effective teacher, he must
have an in-depth knowledge of his discipline.
In conclusion, by possessing and demonstrating outstanding
values, showing compassion, and exhibiting a thorough
knowledge of his subject area, the right person can make a
good teacher.

Role Model
First, a person who becomes a teacher must keep in mind that
they are a role model to the children in their midst. Their private
and professional life must be beyond reproach. A teacher is
responsible for setting values as well as teaching values. A
teacher has a big influence on a child's life; therefore, a teacher
must be careful about the kinds of signals he sends out to the
children in his environment. Today, it's hard to tell teachers from
students because they dress alike, wear their hair alike,
associate together, and act the same. A teacher should set
himself apart if he is to be a positive influence on the students he
comes in contact with. Once a teacher loses his credibility and/or
self-respect, he is no longer effective in the classroom.

Compassion
An effective teacher must also be compassionate. Compassion
is a quality that allows a teacher to have a sense of humor, get
to know students qualities, and be supportive of students efforts.
A teacher must be able to laugh with his students. This creates a
relationship between learner and teacher, and shows the
students that the teacher has a human side, and tells the student
that the teacher is approachable. A good teacher will get to know
each of his students learning abilities and styles. This will allow
the teacher to get most from each student. Compassion allows
the teacher to empathize with the students who are having
problems in school or at home by being supportive and by
providing a positive direction. Students can be turned off if they
perceive that a teacher does not care.

Knowledge
Finally, if a person is going to be an effective teacher, he must
have a thorough knowledge of his discipline. This gives the
teacher a sense of confidence and allows the teacher to be well
organized. An effective teacher knows and likes what he teaches,
and the enthusiasm will show and will become a part of the
students. Without a good master of this subject matter, a teacher
is unable to make well-informed decisions about objectives to be
covered.
Conclusion
In conclusion, by possessing and demonstrating outstanding
values, showing compassion, and exhibiting a thorough
knowledge of his subject area, the right person can make a good
teacher. If students are to learn, they must be influenced by
persons who have all three of these characteristics.

Many scholars note the decline in the use of research resources that are
only available in print form. With the onset of the availability of many
resources such as journal articles, encyclopedias and other sources such
as public records and almanacs online, the use of the libraries by
individuals who are seeking information has also declined.
In an essay written to a local school board, argue whether you feel this
trend of accessing research resources online versus physically visiting a
library is commendable or contemptible. Reflect on modern research
techniques and the effects of a strictly online environment on a culture of
academic investigation. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of
researching a topic that excludes or minimizes the need to physically
search for resources. Finally, draw upon your own exposure to an attitude
toward online resources and print copy resources, respectively.
What would be your thesis?
How would you construct your outline?
What transitions would you use?

Modern research techniques (Google, electronic journals, electronic census/reports)
Effects of a strictly online environment on a culture of academic investigation (not all
resources are readily available online, search engines/wikis could minimize expanse of
sources, may lack conflicting resources)
Advantages of online research (convenience, research anywhere/anytime, not restricted
to library hours or reserving computer in lab, more quickly locate information)
Disadvantages of online research (may lack academic integrity unlike library, library
allows you to roam stacks for inspiration, lacks live human resource that can clarify
confusion or offer unknown resource, not all resources are readily available online)
My exposure to and attitude toward online resources (online course, interactive classes)
My exposure to and attitude toward print copy resources (speaking with librarian)

Conclusion/Thesis: Unfortunately, considering the convenience, efficiency, and timeliness
of using online sources exclusively for research, the library and librarian may indeed be a
thing of the past.

Research in many ways is meant to be excavated, discovered,
and illuminated through the skill of the researcher, not
masticated, reconstituted and regurgitating through the wonders
of modern technology. A research topic that allows the
researcher to use only resources available online reduces input
from other sources that may support or refute whatever the topic
is that has been selected. While this essay does not support the
abandonment of the use of the Internet to search for supporting
documentation, it is more important to search all possible
resources rather than just those available online.

Schools Should Prohibit Machines That Sell Soda and Processed Snack Foods

Banning machines that sell soda and processed snack foods like candy
and potato chips is necessary to protect students' health. Numerous
studies have shown that growing numbers of young people are seriously
overweight. Moreover, teaching students about proper nutrition in health
courses and then surrounding them with junk foods sends a confusing,
even hypocritical, message.
Schools Should Not Prohibit Machines That Sell Soda and Processed Snack Foods

Prohibiting machines that sell soda and processed snack foods like candy
and potato chips would deprive school districts of an important source of
revenue. Such a ban would also place unnecessary restrictions on
students' rights to make their own decisions about what they eat. In the
end, students who want sodas and snack foods will find a way to get them,
regardless of whether they are sold in schools.

In support of the vending machines, some say, whether or not
schools sell sodas and snack food, students who want them
will get them one way or another. There may be some validity
to this argument. However, the school should still make use of
its educational opportunity. If schools did not offer an
unhealthy option, but instead stocked the machines with fresh
fruit or whole-grain crackers, then students would eat those
because they were there.
