CLASSEXPECTATIONS

Takingaclassinanonlineformatpresentsadvantagesanddisadvantages.Forexample,somestudentsenjoynothavingtoattendacampusclassonaregular
basis.Itisconvenienttoworkonlineoutofone'sownhomeoroffice.However,thisclassrequiresalotofselfdiscipline.Pleasetrytoscheduleyourtimewiselyand
donotwaituntilthelastminutetobegin,letalonecomplete,anassignment.

assignmentsinthisclassarenotdifficult.But,theyhavebeendesignedtomakeyouthink.Mostquestionsarenotblack&white,meaningtheydonotnecessarily

clearlystatedopinionsbasedonunderstandingofconceptsandideaspresentedinthereadingassignmentsvocabulary,grammar,spellingandoverall
organizationalwritingskillsuseofexamplestosubstantiateanopinion,statement,oridea.Thetexthasguidesthatwillassistyou,andtheonlinecourse
providesadditionallinksforyourreference.Attheendofeachchapterofthetextyouwillfindhelpfulguidessuchas"CompareandContrast"and"Keywords."
(2)Projectgradeswillforemostbebasedupontheexcellenceoftheprojectworkwhichincludebutarenotlimitedto:research,creativity,responsetothegiven
problem,execution,howcompletelyinstructionswerefollowed,deadlineaccountabilityandpresentation.

Thisuniquelydesignedcourseputsheavyemphasisonallfouroftheabovecriteria.Studentswillpracticereading,writing,speakingandlisteningincludingreading
texts,understandingothersideasandexpressingonesowneffectiveexpressionandaudienceawareness.
Readingthetextfortheclassprovidesavocabularyfordiscussingart.Readingandperformingresearchoutsideofthetextbookprovidesameanstolearnabout
historyandtechniquesaswellasindividualartistsandstyles.
Writingasacomponentinthiscourseincludesafewvariationsoncriticalanalysis.Someassignmentswillrequireastudenttovisitagalleryormuseuminorderto
reviewparticularpiecesofart.Fromtheirobservationsthestudentsareaskedtodrawconclusionsconcerningthesocial,economic,religious,educationaland
politicalinfluencesonthatpieceofart.Othertimesstudentsmayreviewafilmandselectscenestoanalyzefromanartistspointofview.Aresearchpapermay
requireastudenttonotonlywriteaboutthebiographicalhighlightsofaparticularartistbuttoexplainavarietyofartpiecesandincludediscussionofstyle,periods,
movementsandinfluences.
Speakingincludespresentationanddiscussionofresearchandwriting.Topicswillincludedescriptionofaspecificpieceofartwiththestudentsopinionaboutthe
piece.Otherstudentsarerequiredtoreviewandreplybasedontheirobservationsandopinions.Thissetsupadialogbetweenthestudents.
Indistanceclasses,studentsparticipateinonlinediscussionswitheachother.Studentsarealsoencouragedtocommunicatewitheachotherviatheonlineemail
course.Studentsintheseclassesmustpayparticularattentioninordertounderstandwhatanotherissayingonline.Duringanonlinediscussion,studentsare
encouragedtouseemoticonstohelpconveyemotionandmoodinthewrittenword.
Listeningisaskillthatisalwayspracticedinintroductorycourses.Theinstructormaypresentseveraltechniques,rangingfromsimpletocomplex.Thesecan
includedirectlecture,studentleddiscussions,questionandanswersetc.Itisnecessaryforthestudenttolistenandobservecarefullyinordertounderstandand
discussthemanyaspectsofart.Asabove,indistanceclassesstudentsmustlistenwhilereadingonlinediscussionandpresentations.

(2)Creativity:Studentswillpracticeartisticexpressionandappreciationthroughparticipation,insight,intuition,andconceptualization.Theywillcombineknown
conceptsandideasinnewways.
Whilethisclassreliesheavilyuponthetext,andexamplesprovidedingallery/museumvisitsorinclasspresentations,studentswillprovidewrittenandhandson
examplesofcreativity.Aresearchpapermaybewritteninaninterviewform.Thisallowsthestudenttoexplorehisorherownwritingskillswhileactingasa
magazine/TV/radiointerviewerconductinganinterviewwithaspecificartist.Thestudentmustincludebiographicalinformationaswellasdiscussionofartpieces,
stylesandinfluenceinthequestionandanswerformat.Thisallowsthestudenttobecomequitecreativewiththeirownpersonaaswellasputtingthemselvesinthe
shoesoftheartist.
Studentswillalsocreateafoundobjectartproject.Studentsareaskedtogathereverydayitemsfoundaroundtheirhomes,schools,businesses,etc.andtheto
combinesometogethertocreateananimalorhumanfigure.Thisforcesstudentstolookateverydayitemsinanewwayasart!Moststudentsaresurprisedto
findhowthisprojecthelpsthemappreciatetheprocessofdesignandexecutionofart.

(3)CriticalThinking:Studentswillpracticecomparative,contrastingandconstructivethinking,problemsolvingstrategies,evaluatingevidenceandsound
judgment,creativethoughtandlogicalsequentialreasoning.Studentswilllearntorecognizetheirownbiasesandhowtheyaffectjudgment.
Theaspectofcriticalthinkingisappliedandpracticedinboththeresearch/writingprojectsandthefoundobjectartproject.Theindepthanalysisoftheartpieces,
historicandcontemporary,isfundamentaltothisclass.Allcriticalthinkinginthiscoursedealswiththoughtprocess,planningandexecution.

(4)Esthetics:Studentswilllearnofthehistoryanddevelopmentintheareaofvisualart.Studentswillgainanappreciationforthebeautyofknowledgeinthe
discipline,ofdifferentmodesofinquiry,ofvaluesandattitudesandimplicationsoftheseforthefuture.
Thiscourseintroducesthecomplexandhighlysubjectivetopicofconversationintheareaofestheticsinart.Throughouthistorymanypiecesofarthavebeen
considereduglyorinappropriate.Theideaofestheticsisexploredandredefinedinthisclassasstylesandimageryarepresented.Studentswilldiscuss
controversialartworkaspartoftheclass.

(5)SocialWeb:Studentswillgainagreaterunderstandingoftheirroleinsocietyincludingimplicationsofknowledgeandactions,emphasizingtheworthofthe
individual,appreciationofmulticulturalismandbenefitsofdiversityinsociety.
Imageryandstyleshistoricallyhavereflectedourlives,oursurroundingspeople,places,culture,politics,socialissues,etc.Artasdocumentation,social
expression,andselfexpressionispresentedthroughouttheclass.Freedomofexpressionisalsoanunderlyingthemeoftheclass.Arthasbeenandwillalwaysbe
atooltopersuadesocialchangeandtoallowartisticabilitytopeopleallovertheworld.Studentsareencouragedtotakepartinextracreditassignmentsoutsidethe
classroominvolvingvisitstolocalmuseumsandartgalleriesformoreexposure.Acontroversialartdiscussionexploresfreedomofthoughtandopinion.

(6)Substance:Studentswillstudyabroadrangeoftopicsinthevisualartareaincluding:theelementsofart/theprinciplesofdesign,terminology,definitionsand
conceptsrelatingtohistoricalandcontemporaryartsuchas:styles,media,techniques,sculpture,architecture,photography,film,anddigitalartsaswellas
recognizesignificantartistsandworksofart.
Fundamentally,arthasshapedculture,society,values,awarenessandperception.Arthasenrichedlifeexperiences.Ithasbroughtfarawayplacesnear,ithas
madethemundaneextraordinaryandremarkable,andithasexposedthetruestsenseofdiversity.Thisclassexploresthewaysandstylesthatcanbeusedto
achievethis:fineart,film,photography,sculpture,craftandarchitecture.Studentslearnhowvisualartbecomesamasterfulformofcommunicationandhowit
affectstheireverydaylivesthroughwritingandhandsonprojectsaswellastoursofgalleriesandmuseums.

(7)Miscellaneous:Besidescommunicationskills(reading,writing,speakingandlistening)thisclassteacheslifelongskillsthatcanbeusedintheworkplaceand
home:
a)ExhibitpersonalresponsibilitystudentsareexpectedtoacceptresponsibilityformissedassignmentsandeithercompleteExtraCreditassignmentstohelp
withmissedpointsortoacceptalowergradeifclassexpectationsarenotmet.
b)Utilizeorganizationandtime/projectmanagementskillsstudentsareexpectedtoadherestrictlytosubmissiondays,dates,andtimes.Studentsmaybe

GENERALEDUCATIONSTATEMENT
ThiscourseispartoftheGeneralEducationProgramatSaltLakeCommunityCollege.Itisdesignednotonlytoteachtheinformationandskillsrequiredbythe
discipline,butalsotodevelopvitalworkplaceskillsandtoteachstrategiesandskillsthatcanbeusedforlifelonglearning.
Whilethesubjectofeachcourseisimportantanduseful,webecometrulyeducatedthroughmakingconnectionsofsuchvariedinformationwiththedifferent
methodsoforganizinghumanexperiencethatarepracticedbydifferentdisciplines.Therefore,thiscourse,whencombinedwithotherGeneralEducationcourses,
