General considerations 14 Conformity to standard Hose reets shoul! comply with the requirements of MS 1447, 44.2 Limitation of hose in carfain ciroumstances 48 4447 permits up to 30 m of hase An hose reals. However due {0 Tikelthood of the hose ving to be handled by persons of nly modorate physical stength ‘and also when the likely ates for the hose are tortuous, Ne fength and size of ose on the Teel should be limited, and routing and provision of reels shoule De " aewed with these tations in mind, 45. Provision and siting: 16.1 Provision ‘ome hose reel should be provided 10 cover every 800 mrt of lor space of Patt thereot. 45. Siting 43.2.4. Hose reais should be sit adjacent to exits in corridors 90 retit routes, in such a way that the nozzl ‘akon into every room and within 6 fof each part of a room, Having regard tae heavy furniture of equipment A ‘be iniroduced into a fom, Should be capable additionally of er nga tino the back of any re0e8S formed. 46.2.2. In exceptional circumstanch® consideration may also be neetled aS to the desirability of siting hose reels in such 2 WAY ‘hat if fire prevents access 10 Ne hose real site, the fre tan be attacked from another hose reel in the vicinity 416. Installation of hose reels 46.1 Hose reels in recessos Preferably hose reals should! be installed in recesses £0 that they do not form obstructions on Prtoute of oscape. The celtals of ‘eegatation vill vary considerably ‘owing to the wide variation Br typos of hose reel and their size ‘Atypical example of 2M instalation of a fixed hose reel IS iMlustrated in Figure 3. 2B MS 1489 : PART 7: 1999 ne or Recess AnieRE ROSE REELIS RECESSED) seeassom, ‘nou creams J | sisimuctexs / |e Feare eee 04) sf wer erAllr Ie. 000RS ARE PROVDEDTOA Recessto. Typical installation for a hose reel 16.2 Recess doors Any doors provided for hose real recesses should be so hinged that they open approximately 180° so as not to offer any obstruction to the hose being run out in either direction. The doors should not normally be fitted with locks unless the key is available for emergency use. 16.3 Hose reels in open areas ‘When installed on open floor areas it may be necessary fo position hose reels above head hoight, but in these cases the nozzle retainer, the hose guide and the inlet valve should be filled at about 900 mm above floor level. It may also be desirable to provide an anti-overrun device to prevent the hose from becoming entangled when run out. 16.4 Importance of firm fixing Hose reel brackets should be firmly fixed to the wall so that casual knocks received during normal use of the building and the stresses incurred during use for firefighting will net prevent the unimpeded use of the hose reel 44 WS 1489 : PART 4: 4999 47. Co-orditiating spaces for hose reels ATA The spaces requited for most Pes of hose reel and recommendations concerning thelr focation in relation to floor or ground Pee ate indicated in Figures 3, 4 and 8. Spaces for ‘horizontal’ hose reels are not given as these are considered to be special installations. 47.2. The definitions of the different types of hose reel and the maximum overall size of ‘each type aro given in MS 1447. 47.3. The figures indicate the range of acceptable choices from the point of view of aicensional co-ordination, First preferences: 370 thaicated by a thick blab and second preferences are indicated by a smaller blob. Water supply for hose reels (see also clause 8.1.4) 48.1. Minimum requirement ‘Ae a minimum, the water supply to hose reels should be such that when the two most inydraulically remote hose reels in @ Suing are in use simultaneously, each vl provide a jet Gt approximately 6 m in tength and wit ‘deliver not less than 0.6 és (30 émin). For example Ginera fength of 30 m of hose ree! tubing to Wi 147 a. in use with a 6 mm nozzle @ minimum “Vatie pressure of 2 bar* wil be required at the entry to cach reel. 18.2 Booster pumps 48.2.1 Where the water pressure in hose reel mains needs to be boosted the provision of an ‘lectrically driven pump is usually @ Convenient method. A duplicate standby Pump should also be provided. 48.2.2. Both motors and pumps should be, sited in fire protected positions and the electrical Supply fo them should be by an exclusive eeuit with the cables folowing a routo of ne ible Hae cor be provided with adequate protection + bar = 108 Wa = 100 KPa 7 MS 1489 : PART 7: 1999 48.2.3 The booster pumps system should come into operation automatically on a drop in pressure or a flow of water. Both pumps should be automatically primed at all times (se2 clause 9. 4.1). 18.24. All pumps should also be capablo of being started or stopped manually. The standby pump should be so arranged that it will operate automatically on a failure for any reason of the duty pump. 18.2.5 An audible and visual alarm should be provided at the fire alarm panet or at an agreed position to indicate that the equipment and the pumping plant have operated. 18.3 Connection for boosted supplies ‘The water authority does not permit a booster pump to be connected directly into a supply main. In such cases the installation should be fed from a suction tank or inter-connected tanks having a minimum capacity of 2250 ¢ for the first hoso roel and 1125 ¢ for each additional hose reel, up to a maximum of $000 ¢. The tank or tanks should be automatically supplied from a tovins main, controlled by a ball valvo of minimum diameter 50 mm. 18.4 Use of domestic water tanks ‘Tanks supplying water for domestic purposes should not be used as suction tanks for hose: reel installations unless arrangements have been made for these domestic supplies to be diawn off in such a manner that the requisite reserve of water for the hose reel installation is always preserved, 19. Hose reel notices 49.4 For hose reels which do not have automatic action a notice should be provided indicating the need to turn on thé inlet valve before running out the hose. This notice should be affixed to the wall in a prominent position adjacent to the reel (see Figure 3). 49.2. Allnotices should be set out in letters easily readable in adverse conditions. They should be made so that they are not unreasonably affected by weathering or by corrosion caused by industrial processes in the vicinity. 49.3 If hose reels are located in recesses fo which doors are filled, the doors (whether glazed or otherwise) should beer the words ‘FIRE HOSE REEL in red letters at least 50 mm high on a white background. 16 MS 1489 : PART 1: 1999 ta tan saegpanwNs| = i Figure 4.
