Albert Schweitzer was born on January 14, 1875, in Kaysersberg, Alsace. He grew up near Colmar and studied theology
and philosophy in Strasbourg. Even before reaching thirty,
he acquired international fame as a New Testament scholar
as well as an organist and authority on Johann Sebastian
Bach.
Deciding to become a medical missionary in Africa, he
studied medicine from 1905 to 1913 at the University of Strasbourg. In 1913 he went to Lambarn in French Equatorial
Africa and built a primitive jungle hospital for the purpose
of helping Africans who needed medical a ention. He had
raised money for this project by giving organ concerts
throughout Europe. In 1924 he built a large hospital and a
medical station.

Schweitzer is also well known as an author. His most
important books are the rst two volumes of e Philosophy
of Civilization ( e Decay and Restoration of Civilization and Civilization and Ethics [1923]), e Quest of the Historical Jesus
(1906), Out of My Life and ought (1931), and From My African
Notebook (1939).
In 1952 Schweitzer received the Nobel Peace Prize. He
died peacefully in Lambarn on September 4, 1965.
