Pm / Po
Figure 1: Mass flow rate of the mixture vs. back pressure ratio for three two-phase choking flow models.

The approach followed in attaining these curves is explained as follows:

1. The first step was to assume that the drop in pressure across the tube is an isentropic process and
that initially the water is entirely in liquid phase. This meant that at a certain stagnation pressure,
Po (given as 40 bar), the fluid entropy can be taken from the steam tables.
2. The second step was to take pressure values in the range of 0.5 - 40 bar and calculate the quality
of the fluid using the entropy at stagnation pressure (because process is isentropic).
3. From this computed quality the other properties such as mixture enthalpy and mixture density are
calculated.

4. For homogeneous model the following expression for Gm is used,

5. For Fauske model, the mass flow rate becomes

6. And for Moody model, the expression is similar to the Fauske model but the exponent in the
expression for S is 1/3.

Appendix
The table below shows all the calculations performed for plotting the curves. The last three columns
represent the mixture mass flow rates for the three models.
