Rationale

Timeframe

The students will know they are going to be talking about germs and how they
spread. Ask students where they think germs live and if they can see germs. Tell
students and make sure they know that germs are everywhere and they are
going to see how germs spread and make it to different places.
A new hands on
activity
A continuation of the
importance of staying
healthy
Why is there a need for this lesson? The need for this lesson is to stress the
importance of staying clean, washing your hands, and staying healthy and germ
free. A first grade class will learn and understand that germs can travel from one
person or surface to another. It is extremely important for students to
understand the health standards. It is crucial for students to know how to wash
their hands and to keep themselves clean. Students need to understand the
importance of staying healthy and trying to keep themselves clean so they do
not get sick. By knowing correct procedures and things to do students will
become healthier individuals, which could decrease the amount of time sick from
school. This will also lead to decrease in the spread of germs.
The timeframe for this lesson is 30 minutes. Students will be introduced to the
topic for the day, I will model the activity, students will participate and be asked
questions, and students will have time to complete independent work to show
mastery of the objective.

Objective(s) of the
activity
Connections to
standards

Students will be able to understand what germs are and how they spread and the
importance of healthy and appropriate behaviors.
Which NYS Early Learning, or Common Core Standards are addressed? Are there
other standards used?
Standard 2: A Safe and Healthy Environment.
Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain
a safe and healthy environment.
Comprehension and Collaboration
1. Participate in collaborative conversations about grade 1 topics and texts with
peers, diverse partners, and adults in small and larger groups.

Language Objectives

Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas

4. Describe people, places, things, and events, using relevant details and
expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
5. Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions, when appropriate, to
clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
6. Produce complete sentences, when appropriate to the task and the situation.
Vocabulary- Germs, hand-washing health, cleanliness, sickness, bacteria, cold,
virus, doctor, spread
How is this activity using the specific language demand? The students will
review these words and the importance of them. Students will be able to connect
these words to their lives and how they are important to them. This activity uses
the specific language demand because the demonstration and hands on activity
has students pretending glitter is germs and they are able to watch them spread.
Students then have the opportunity to talk about the importance of handwashing, spreading germs, staying healthy, and getting sick because to germs.
Staying clean, not spreading germs and staying healthy helps promotes healthy,

Learning Activity Plan for Grade 1

respectful, supportive, and challenging learning environments for young children
because students are aware of how to keep themselves clean and safe. This
prevents students from spreading germs and getting sick. This is extremely
important because of how dirty schools and classrooms should be. When
students can participate in a hands on activity they can see how easily germs
can spread and what they outcome can be. This can help students understand
the importance of staying clean, not sharing foods and drinks, and washing their
hands.

in getting them interested and engaged. To hook the students and gain their
interest and attention I will begin by showing them a BrainPop video on handwashing. This will introduce the students to what we will be talking about today
in Science. They will watch the BrainPop video and then complete the interactive
quiz as a class.

Instruction/Mini Lesson (Outline the procedures or sequence activities that will

make up this learning experience; for instance, you might follow a routine
wherein you model (I try); and ask for active involvement (we try) during a whole
group session.
I will put a drop of lotion on my hands and rub them together to spread the lotion
out evenly.
With my hands over the sink, I will have my helper put a pinch of glitter in the
palm of one of my hands.
With my hands still over the sink, I will make a fist with the hand that has glitter
on it, then spread my fingers out. I will then show the students my hands and ask
them the following questions; What do you see? What do you think happened?
What do you think represents the germs in this demonstration?
Now I will press the palms of your hands together and pull them apart. I will ask
the students a few questions; What do you notice about my hands? What do you
think happened now?
I will then touch my helper's hand. I will then ask the students; What do you see
on my partners hand? What happened now? Do you think germs spread? How did
the germs spread? Do you see anything on my partners hand?
Then I will get a paper towel and use it to wipe my hands clean of all the glitter. I
will ask the students; Do you think the germs are gone? Are my hands clean? Do
you think this paper towel is taking the germs away?

Learning Activity Plan for Grade 1

After using the paper towel, I will try using soap and water to wash your hands.
Then I will re- ask the students if the glitter came off and why they think it did.
This will show the students that taking a paper towel to wipe your hands doesnt
get rid of germs. However, washing your hands with soap and water takes
germs away and helps you stay clean, healthy, and safe. After the experiment I
will make sure that the students understand and realized that germs spread very
easily. Anything I touched got glitter on it because the germs were spreading.
The glitter is acting the same way that the germs on your hands act - there are a
lot of them, they spread around easily, and it can be tough to get them off.
However, the difference between real life and this experiment is that germs are
so small you can't see them without a microscope, so you have to know when
you may have come into contact with germs and wash your hands often.

Independent Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or

independently) The students will independently complete a worksheet about
germs and how they spread. There are six pictures and each picture either shows
germs being prevented or germs being spread. The students will be asked to
draw a blue circle around the pictures that show germs being prevented and
make a red x through the pictures that show germs being spread or how they
spread. As the students complete this worksheet they will be paired up with a
partner and will be asked to turn and talk about their answers. Students will
discuss and see whether they have the same answers or not and why and why
not. Students will be able to talk about why they think germs are spreading or
how they are being prevented.

Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps) As a closure activity the students will
create their own germ by using paint, markers, and eyes. The students will be
given a white piece of paper and they will be able to choose up to three paint

colors. The students will use the paint to make a germ in a shape similar to what
is shown. The students will be able to splatter and use a brush to help them
create their germ. The students will then be able to add features to their germs
and make it as creative as they would like. The students will then be given eyes
and a paper mouth to glue onto their germ. Once the students are done the
students will each get the opportunity to share their germ with the class. After
sharing they will tell the class one important fact they learned about germs or

hand-washing and why it is important.

How can I provide an opportunity to remediate, reinforce, or expand on students

learning today in class? As a educator it is important to provide an opportunity to
remediate, reinforce, and expand on students learning. To remediate, reinforce,
and expand this particular lesson I will read the story Germs are not for sharing
by Elizabeth Verdick. After reading the story to the class each student will get
two hand templates with lines on them. On each hand the students will write one
way to prevent germs and stay healthy. The students will then be able to color in
and cut out their hands. Lastly, the students will share what they wrote with the
class.
The students love working with partners, creating art projects, talking and
socializing with their classmates, and participating in hands on activities. Due to
the students interested I created a lesson that involved things that they enjoy to
