Replacing one new kitchen with another

new kitchen. But having bought an elegant
stone new-build house in an Oxfordshire
village, Ann Bailey did just that. I had to
think very long and hard about it, she recalls.
But I couldnt get away from the fact that,
although the developer had designed and
finished everything in the house to a very high
specification, the kitchen just wasnt my style.
As someone who loves cooking and
entertaining in her spare time, Ann, who
volunteers for a charity, decided that the
kitchen was to be a room in which she would
be spending a great deal of time, and it was
worth investing to get it right. When I do
entertain, I tend to go over the top and invite
twenty people all at once, because I dont like
to do things by halves, she laughs. So it was
especially important to me to make the kitchen
look good, feel congenial and work brilliantly.
Walking past the brand new Teddy
Edwards showroom in Oxford, Ann decided it
was time for action. She popped her head
around the door even though the showroom
was barely finished to tell the team how
much she liked one of the displays she could
see being built in the window. It caught my
eye immediately, because it was obviously
beautifully made, traditional furniture, but
with a lighter, simpler touch and very

clean lines, she explains. And it was Design

Manager, Martin Postle, who took up the
challenge to create a more inviting and
sociable kitchen for Anns new home.
Martin took one look at the existing kitchen
space and set about planning a better layout. I
could see that it was essential to create a sense
of flow around the room, and a better link
between the kitchen and dining area, says
Martin. With light only coming in from one
end of the room, it was also important to create
an open layout using fresh colours, so that it
14 ekbb.co.uk

didnt feel as if light was struggling to get from

one end of the room to the other.
His solution was to design a rectangular
island to link the kitchen to the dining area,
as well as providing lots of prep surface and
a sink, positioned to enjoy lovely views of the
garden, rather than the wall. Painted in a
warm grey and topped with a natural-coloured
Caesarstone quartz surface, the same palette is
used on the far wall with its dresser cupboard,
to house small appliances, and merchant
drawers below, for plenty of useful storage.

Ann, a lifelong AGA fan, chose a Total Control

model for its flexibility - it can be turned on and
off easily with a touch screen panel and is
ready to use quickly - and Martin designed a
canopy above to create a focal point in the
room. With so much light streaming into the
room from the glass doors, the room can get
very warm, so its very useful to turn the AGA
on and off as I need it, so that the heat isnt
overpowering, says Ann.
The finishing touch is a smart and ultrapractical section of tall, bleached oak

cupboards to provide soft contrast with

the painted furniture and to house the fridge
freezer and larder cupboard, so that all the
frozen, chilled and dried food is stored in
one, easy-to-access centre, close to the prep
surface on the central island.
It was a big decision to replace the original
kitchen, but Im so glad that I took the plunge,
says Ann. I spend a huge amount of time
in here, and thats because the new kitchen
makes life simpler, keeps me tidy, and is a
pleasure to be in.

introduction. Her cookery classes are a
sell-out success and her recipes, from the
aromatic Ultimate Tadka Dhal to rich
Chocolate Cardamom Torte, are ever popular.
And in between a hectic schedule of TV
appearances, recipe development and travels,
Anjali had one thing on her mind: her new
home. I wanted to create a lovely environment
where I could totally relax, she says.
Moving from Bolton to the family apartment in

north London was one thing, the state of the

dcor another. It hadnt been used much
over the years, so it needed refurbishing,
explains Anjali. It was the kitchen I was
most unhappy with, because it looked
dated and felt cramped and, for me, it was
especially important to get it right, because
I knew I would be spending a great deal of
time cooking in it, she smiles.
After taking some photos and making a
video of the existing kitchen on her phone,
Anjali headed off to meet Diane Berry of
Diane Berry Kitchens in Manchester, not far
from the family home. I had been past her

showrooms many times and really liked her

contemporary style, she says of her choice.
Working long distance, the video really
helped Diane get a sense of the space and the
possibilities for the room, and she suggested
replacing the units built all around the room
with a radically different design. With a tall
run of units on one wall, and a streamlined
base run underneath the window for a wet
zone, Diane created a dramatic peninsula to
form the focus of the room. I knew that Anjali
likes to cook at the hob facing her friends or
students if she is doing a demonstration, so this
arrangement works perfectly, says Diane.

An island would have been too small, as Anjali

needs plenty of work surface either side
of the hob when she is cooking and a peninsula
also meant that we could continue on the same
material up the wall, to draw the eye upwards
and create the illusion that the room is
much bigger than it actually is.
Calling on fellow kitchen specialist Graham
Robinson, of Halcyon Interiors The ALNO
Store, Diane was able to hand over the project
installation to a local company. It was vital
that we could be on site to work out the precise

templating and fit of the Corian, explains

Graham. We even carried the Corian on to the
window sills to create an immaculate finish
and made sure that every detail was just right
to emphasise the streamlined, modern design.
The Corian Glacier White contrasts with
the graphite grey of the wallpaper and Carbon
Oak finish of the tall cabinets. A gentle sparkle
in the wallpaper adds a touch of glamour.
I wanted to create the perfect place to come
back to at the end of a busy day, says Anjali,
with just a little touch of opulence!

A complete restoration of a 1950s bungalow

hen Kirsty Hanley, her partner

James and Dappy the dog moved
into their 1950s bungalow three
years ago in the picturesque
village of Bridge in Canterbury, they knew
they had a challenging project on their
hands. The dcor was extremely dated and
the rooms were small, but we liked the area
and plot and bought it with a complete
restoration in mind, explains Kirsty.
Plans included removing all the windows,
replacing the roof and adding a second storey
extension which would triple the size of the
original property and turn it into a farmhousestyle four-bedroomed detached home. The size
of the project meant that the family moved
out in March 2011 and the works took just over
a year to complete. It was a massive overhaul,
but we knew it would be worth it when we
had so much extra space to play with and
could create a home exactly to our
specifications, explains Kirsty.

The kitchen was the main room Kirsty relished

the chance to completely re-design and with
a blank shell and large space to get creative
with, it was a dream situation. The previous
kitchen left little to be desired with oldfashioned units, flimsy doors and a boxed-in
feel. It was just so horrendous before, that I
wanted something really stunning this time
round and to show it off to the max, says Kirsty.
Through a recommendation, Kirsty
contacted Davonport Kitchens and visited
their showroom in Colchester, Essex to
see if they could bring her dream kitchen
to life. I instantly fell in love with the
whole look of the place, the service and all
the stunning curved handmade furniture
on display, explains Kirsty. Sold by what she

had seen, Kitchen Designer Paula Watts visited

Kirstys home to start discussing options.
Although open to ideas, Kirsty did have a
few requirements. It was a must that the new
kitchen would be light and airy, with lots of
visible space, plenty of cupboards and that
clutter be cleverly disguised and out of sight.
After viewing all the soft curved furniture
in the showroom, Kirsty was keen to introduce
natural beauty to the scheme and liked the
idea of having a kitchen that included an
effortless mix of wood and hand-painted
cabinetry. She was also particularly smitten
by a circular drum-style island and knew a
similar design had to make an appearance.
After a few consultations, Paulas vision was
clear. The new kitchen was to be a natural

fusion of traditional and contemporary

features, full of practical storage solutions
and designed to be used and enjoyed, while
also complementing the beautiful new
interior of Kirsty and James home.
Classic-style oak cabinetry provides the
country-style element that Kirsty craved with
a stylish mix of natural wood and handpainted units in the softest green finish. This
subtle tone was selected to complement
Kirstys lush garden and to bring a sense of
the outside in, especially as bi-fold doors
open directly onto the outdoor space. Luxury
granite worktops add rich contrast to the pale
wood, with an eye-catching splashback in the
same material highlighting the use of curves
throughout. Expansive floor-to-ceiling

cabinetry provide masses of cupboard

space and includes a custom-made, built-in
wine rack and houses the bank of appliances
with state-of-the-art pyrolytic oven,
combination oven, warming drawer and
coffee machine, all in one handy place.
To avoid trailing wires and a cluttered
worktop, the Davonport team devised an
appliance garage with chic roller blinds to
hide small items like the toaster, kettle and
blender. It means that the kitchen always

looks tidy and streamlined, its such a brilliant

idea, says Kirsty. Theres no shortage of wow
factor features, from the much-loved circular
island with superb hidden storage, topped
with an engraved chopping block for added
character to the show-stopping, cracked ice
worktop at the breakfast bar that catches the
light. Glamour comes in the form of luxury
chandeliers from local company Canterbury
Lighting, and complemented by coloured
mood lighting that creates a contemporary

ambience for every occasion. This is the place

where we now spend most of our time and its
perfect for socialising, says an over the moon
Kirsty. My daughter and fianc are currently
staying with us and we always dine together in
the evening and catch up in the day. We never
feel the need for the TV to be on as we just
enjoy chatting and soaking up the atmosphere
of the room. This kitchen is more than I could

best room in the home!

Contemporary design in an ice-white finish

creates a stunning space for entertaining

moved into a 19th Century barn
conversion in a sleepy
Northamptonshire village, they
immediately knew they couldnt live with the
existing kitchen. The barn had been converted
five years before the couple bought it in a
traditional way with a wooden Shaker-style,
hand-built kitchen with oak worktops, a large
AGA and a riven slate floor. Marie explains,
It was very nicely done but not to our taste.
We really wanted a sleek, contemporary look
and looked forward to creating an exciting
space, not only for cooking but for entertaining
too we love hosting parties!
The couple had been looking for their
perfect property for a number of years before
they stumbled upon the barn. By the time they
snapped it up, Marie and Paul knew exactly
what they wanted and together they made a
wish list of what they were hoping to achieve.
Marie explains, We needed someone to

KITCHEN PROFILE
Expansive island units dominate this space with cabinetry by luxury
Italian kitchen manufacturer Cesar. With pristine, white silk lacquer
and inset aluminium handles, NGI Design has cleverly created a multifunctional space, which is perfect for informal gatherings, and includes
a cooking, preparation, entertaining and dining area with plenty of wine
storage and a champagne bar. Work surfaces have been topped with
Corian with large, porcelain Marazzi floor tiles underfoot, while highperformance Gaggenau appliances make entertaining a breeze.

for a complete home re-design, so it made
sense to go to NGI Design because we had
bought other furniture and lighting from
them over the years so we felt confident
that they could deliver the whole package.
Marie and Paul knew they wanted a design
for the kitchen which would use this vast 122m
by 4m of space to its greatest effect. The couple
provided kitchen architect Neil Partridge of
NGI Design with a list of the appliances they
already knew they would need, from ample
refrigeration to plenty of temperaturecontrolled wine storage. We wanted our
kitchen to be practical for everyday use on
the one hand, with wow factor on the
other. It would need to adapt to provide the
perfect venue for entertaining both small
groups of guests and larger parties, too. It was
very important to us that our vision was
realised, which NGI Design certainly did and
they gave us loads of inspiration to help us

It is gorgeously unusual with flush

several bottles of champagne. They look
amazing when filled for parties.

They were worried they had bitten off

more than they could possibly chew.

here was a moment when Michael and

Nicola Jones began to wonder if they
had made a terrible mistake. After
buying their five storey period home in
central London, they were worried that they
had bitten off more of a major refurbishment
than they could possibly chew, especially
when it came to the basement. It was so
incredibly dark and gloomy, recalls Michael
of the two dank rooms and a chilly corridor
that made up the lowest level of the house.
But, they were determined to restore the
house to its former glory and convert the drab
basement into a family living space to share
with four year-old daughter, Anna. Resolved,
the couple called in kitchen designer Rob
Gelling, Director of Kitchen Architecture,
and architects Michaelis Boyd Associates.
We wanted a space for relaxed living and
entertaining, that was relatively childfriendly, explains Michael. We had lots of
discussions about how to create an area

It was worth it, because there

are now no barriers in the
room, creating an open feel.

that would be a family living area, kitchen and

dining area all rolled into one. The solution
was to remove all the internal walls in the
basement, a major project in itself.
Instead of supporting columns, the
structure is supported by heavy duty steel
beams running across the width of the room.
Although it involved a huge amount of
structural work, it was worth it, because there
are now no barriers in the room, creating a
very open feel, he says. By removing some
outhouses, they were also able to extend out
into the area at the rear of the property,
increasing the size of the room to its
impressive 15 metre length. And, by excavating
outside and building wide steps to lead
gradually up to the pretty garden, they were
able to introduce much more natural light
into the space, an effect enhanced by floor-toceiling glass bi-folding doors.
With the entire room painted white to
create a simple, light environment, Rob
set to work to create a kitchen design that

The family living area

looks over the islands
and dining area to the
garden beyond.

would make the most of the dramatically

different, new space. Robs response was
equally radical. The obvious solution was to
introduce one long island, but apart from the
fact that you see that such a lot, I felt it would
make the space feel long and narrow, he
explains. I also felt that it would create a bit of
no-mans land on one side, not large enough for
a sofa or a dining table, so really a wasted
space. Instead, and to make the most of the
width of the room, this two island concept sits
in the space beautifully, allowing the cook to

take centre stage between the dining and

living areas, which also makes the layout very
sociable. The two islands, each clad in crisp
Corian Glacier White, create the prep and
cooking zones. This arrangement makes a
very contained working area, with a 360
degree view, yet it means that cooking can
take place safely out of the way of kids running
through to the garden, continues Rob. A sweep
of tall units along one wall conceals all the
appliances and masses of storage, blending
into the TV area at the far end of the room, and

houses a simple, steel clad secondary prep

area. Flush fitted into the wall, the clean-lined,
white cabinetry almost disappears from view,
enhancing the uncluttered effect.
Im very glad we took the plunge and
converted the space, says Michael. Calling
in the experts was the best decision. It never
crossed my mind that we might have two
widthways islands until Rob suggested it.
Now the worst part of the house has been
transformed into the best which really isnt
something you expect of a basement.

an impressive 200,000 likes on Facebook since

it began in March 2012. You may have bought
the silicone muffin cases, brightly coloured
spatulas and three-tiered cake stand to show

WHICH OVEN?

Built-in ovens are a good starting point. There

are a variety of ovens that can produce moist
or crispy bakes, explains Danny Lay, Sales
Director at Caple. Its all about choosing the
oven and functions that are right for your
needs. Steam ovens are ideal for retaining

moisture but if youre looking for the best

of both worlds, a combination steam oven is
ideal as you can benefit from a conventional
fan-assisted oven and grill, too. This type of
heat will consistently cook through to the
middle, which makes it ideal for all types
of baking. For extra crispy results, look for
conventional ovens that feature a grill plus
base heat, which is perfect for pies. While,
for delicate baking, look for an electric oven
with turbo conventional heat that provides
fast and even heat distribution for excellent
results with pastries and bread.

ESSENTIAL APPLIANCES

If you fancy yourself as the next celebrity

master baker, such as Paul Hollywood, its
essential to choose an oven with a little
moisture as Neil Pooley, Kitchen Category
Manager at Miele, confirms, If the bread is
baked with little or no steam, he explains,
the starches do not swell, the outer surface
dries out, the crust cracks and it will not stay
crisp for long. All Miele ovens benefit from
Moisture Plus technology, providing
specifically timed injections of steam in
the first few minutes of the baking process,
so that dough will rise more.
Some ovens come with dedicated baking
settings such as special programmes for pastry,
bread or fruit pies, as well as functions that
remove the need for blind baking.
Passionate baker, Maria Mayerhofer, has
founded her own cookery school called Bake
with Maria which includes three KitchenAid
Twelix ovens. The tart setting bakes pastry
to perfection, she says, with no need for blind
baking and no soggy bottoms. For a thin crust
pizza, the ovens pizza setting bakes at a very
high temperature and produces a blistered
pizza crust. The secret lies in the even heat
distribution, professional functions designed
for each dish and a specially recommended
optimum temperature.
Other features to look for include large
oven capacities, four or five shelf positions,
automatic pre-set recipes and self-cleaning.
If you want to create more of a central

hub within the kitchen, then a range cooker

is the right option for you. Choose a model
with a multiple ovens including one for
baking and a warming drawer to get the most
from your cooker along with rapid heat-up
and large oven interiors or capacities.

WHICH HOB?

Hobs are also invaluable for home baking.

Induction is the safest, most energy efficient
hob, as well as offering extremely low
temperatures for melting chocolate without
the need for a bain-marie. The perfect

precision of induction is also advantageous for

jam-makers, adds Richard Walker, Sales and
Marketing Director for De Dietrich, and the
cooking temperature never fluctuates.
Gorenjes new IQCook induction hob uses
IQ sensors to measure the cooking process and
monitor it accordingly. A small disc sensor
placed on the pan lid communicates with
the hobs electronics and then automatically
adjusts the operation of the hob, leaving you
free to get on with other baking tasks. It even
has pre-set cooking modes for precise melting
of chocolate and steam cooking puddings.

WARMING DRAWERS

Warming drawers are also creeping into

domestic kitchens, because they are perfect for
proving dough and keeping bakes warm.
Miele is currently marketing their warming
drawer as a SousChef, Neil Pooley explains.
They can be also be used to prove bread,
gently dry meringues or warm scones for
afternoon tea, he says. Look for models that
feature temperature and time controls,
allowing you to carefully monitor all aspects of
your bake/proving process from start to finish.

MIXERS

Once you have your oven, range, hob and

warming drawer in place, its time to turn your
attention to the appliance that brings it all
together the stand mixer. Offering robust,
state of the art action, there are a variety of fun
colours available. Stand mixers have become a
real object of desire for the kitchen, confirms
Greg Easton, Acting Buyer for small electrical
appliances atJohn Lewis. A great helping hand
for bakers, they offer quick results whipping
up meringues, cream or biscuits and breads.
Whichever appliance youre choosing,
make sure it can also cope with everyday
cooking tasks. It needs to pull its weight and be
a real multi-tasker, explains Lauren Abbott,
Marketing Manager at Gorenje. Hobs need a
wide heat range to both melt chocolate and fry,
and an oven should be able to create moist
cakes, but also roast a joint for Sunday lunch.

hristmas is always a busy time where

the continuous stream of house guests
seems never ending. Creating an
environment where friends and family
can feel at home is an important factor and this
includes providing space for them to carry
out their ablutions without interruption. A
separate guest bathroom is always desirable
and may take the shape of a traditional
en suite arrangement within a bedroom, an
additional adjacent facility or even an open
plan space within the sleeping area itself.

Whichever you have, it should offer an array of

facilities designed to offer that all important
pampering experience. Depending on the
configuration and size of the room, some guest
suites offer the luxury of installing a walk-in
shower and separate tub, but generally with
guest bathrooms tending to be more bijou in
size, incorporating the full range of products
and accessories isnt always possible.
This may mean making concessions and
rather than trying to squeeze in both a bath
and a shower for the sake of it, opt instead

for either a generous showering space or a
sumptuous bath, perhaps with an integral
shower in a suitable position. However, if
making such compromise is difficult, then
consider investing in some of the more
compact bathroom solutions which are more
than equal in terms of practicality and
certainly dont lack in terms of style. Since
guest bathrooms are usually fairly small, its
important to use products which are cleverly
designed to maximise your rooms potential,
says Claire Surplice, Marketing Manager, at
Ideal Standard. Its also worth considering
including products which are designed
to utilise often overlooked corner spaces.
Regardless of size, one vital ingredient to
ensure the bathroom flows well is the layout.
Certainly in smaller spaces, its also important
to make sure that every element works
together in terms of scale so that the space
looks inviting rather than cluttered. Wall hung
models and compact designs are ideal to create
an illusion of space while more curvaceous
designs will help create a softer, less obtrusive
and more welcoming feel. For those with a tub
within a bedroom, then the luxury of space
means you can really go for the wow factor

with a statement bath or striking wash zone.
Whichever bedroom/bathroom configuration
you have, you need to think not just about the
layout of the sanitaryware, but also the main
focal point when you enter the room, advises
Alex Walmsley, Senior Designer at Ripples.
Often the doors are left open, so place the WC
somewhere a little more private and tucked
away so it wont be seen from the bedroom.
Storage is another all important aspect not
just to create a positive, clutter-free first
impression, but also so that your guests feel the
space is their own to use. Plenty of set down
space or open shelves to store wash bags is
essential, a large towel rail or rack to store
various sized towels is also something to
consider, says Hayley Tarrington, Creative
Director at Plug in Design. Whether you have
built-in storage over a wall-hung WC,

Oversized headboards work well with high ceilings

and full length simple curtains which frame windows.
headboards in bespoke sizes endorses this emerging and
increasingly popular trend. An oversized, upholstered bed
makes a dramatic, boutique hotel-style statement and an
extra high headboard is a favourite interior designers
trick, as playing with scale in this way can help create
a very luxurious and made-to-measure look. It is
certainly what most customers are asking for.
Further endorsement comes from Louise Bradley,
an Interior Designer renowned for her timeless and

elegant style. I think a large bedroom is a necessity, not

a luxury! We tend to spend so much time in bed its
estimated at about one third of our lives so I always
focus on creating a luxurious, calming space.
It goes without saying that it helps enormously if your
bedroom is already a large room and has good proportions,
as Louise explains, Oversized headboards work very well
with high ceilings and full length simple curtains which
frame windows but dont detract from the scale of the

room or the view beyond. I love to have a seating area in a
bedroom as most clients view their bedroom as a sanctuary,
and we try to incorporate a space to sit and read, listen to
music or even work. The addition of large scale features
like paintings help to emphasise the look.
Statement size can work really well in smaller rooms

helping to further heighten that luxurious feeling of space.
Although the bed is ultimately the most important piece
of furniture in a bedroom, storage comes a close second.

minimalistic look to more glamourous style but still with
a very contemporary feel. They are fitting many bedroom

WARM FLOORING
Kitchens can feel as warm as toast, thanks
to hi-tech triple glazing, underfloor heating
and high specification insulation.
The type of flooring you choose has a
massive effect on the overall look and feel in
your kitchen, and an obvious suggestion is to
avoid harsh, reflective tiles and to select rich
wood-tone flooring, timber or natural stone
flags. Either can be used with underfloor heating,
and whether your preference is for dry or wet
heating systems, there will be something to
suit. Harvey Booth, Sales & Marketing Director
at Kahrs UK Ltd, emphasises that rich toned
timber really brings a kitchen alive and creates
a real feeling of warmth. It also provides a
fabulous backdrop to contrasting modern
kitchens and furnishings, allowing them to
stand out without looking stark.
Cork flooring is making a comeback and
has superior thermal properties so its great for
creating a cosy atmosphere it is also suitable
to use with underfloor heating.

USING TEXTURE
Texture will add interesting layers and help
balance out angled edges of worktops, cabinetry
and appliances. Wood has always been a
traditional choice for cabinetry and can provide
texture through the type of grain you choose,
whether you go for a distressed or classic look.
Units made from maple will provide a relatively
smooth grain and the rich tones of real
timber or laminate wood effects will instantly
take the cool edge off a white scheme by
creating an interesting contrast.
When considering finishes for fixtures and
fittings, its good to steer away from polished
chrome and stainless steel as the reflective
surfaces can feel cold. Instead, opt for
aesthetically pleasing ceramic sinks and mattfinish faucets which radiate a natural charm.
You can also offset a kitchens hard look with
an inviting dining area including luxurious
upholstered dining chairs in leather, suede or
natural fabrics. Soft furnishings, as their name
implies, will often add warmth to a scheme.
Plump cushions, warm throws and tablecloths
are simple but effective choices. If you have a
period property or interesting features, such as a
brickwork wall or wooden beams, you can make
the most of these by keeping them exposed
natural textures have an imperfect look which
will bring out the character of your home.

Working in harmony with texture, rich warm

colours can promote a feeling of comfort
and they often work well as accent hues to
create depth. Hot, Mediterranean colours such
as red, orange, yellow, deep pink and burgundy
are believed to be both stimulating and
soothing for our emotions. Rob Whitaker,
Brand Director at Fired Earth comments,
Layering colours and textures will create a
really inviting scheme. Colourful cabinetry is
the perfect foil for rich but subtle paint, tiles
and accessories, while wooden or earthy-toned
cabinetry forms a versatile backdrop to vibrant
splashbacks or mood-enhancing paint colours
such as Fired Earths Festival Orange and Race
Yellow. Paint is particularly easy and
inexpensive to change so be bold with colour
and youll be amazed how your kitchen
instantly feels warmer and more welcoming.
Repetition of colour or pattern in
accessories and furnishings is a great way to
tie a room together. Choose two or three key
accent shades and pick them out in your
choice of blinds, table linen, cushions,
crockery or splashback tiles, for example.

Even on the coldest of winter days, the beauty of

the sun shining through your kitchen windows is
always going to put a smile on your face. Letting
natural light in is the best way to create a
welcoming and spacious feeling in any room, but
its perhaps the most important in the kitchen.
Good lighting is a key element in adding
warmth and conviviality to the kitchen. It is
important for preparation areas as well as for
creating a relaxing ambience for serving and
entertaining guests in. Naturally spaceenhancing, lighting can make rooms look bigger
and brighter. If youre buying a new kitchen, look
for designs that come with built-in lights, for
example cooker hoods and cupboards. Ensure
that you have a high level of task lighting at
the sink, the oven and worktops especially.
When it comes to creating ambience, its
difficult to under-estimate the difference that
dimmer controls and sparkling pendants can
make. Joe Burns, co-founder of Oliver Burns
comments, There is no reason why you cant
play with different lighting settings and styles
in the kitchen. Dimmer switches and mood
lighting will create warmth especially if you
have an eat-in kitchen or a breakfast bar. You
can create a lighting plan that creates a natural
sociable gathering point. If you have an island
in your kitchen, consider a grand lighting
statement that youd usually reserve for the
living room or the bedroom a chandelier,
for example will emit a naturally warmer
light than harsher, overhead lighting.
So, from choosing modern finishes and
a mixture of textures to setting the right
atmosphere, you can ensure that your kitchen
is everyones favourite gathering spot.

FURNITURE FINISHES
Emphasise the link between raw, textural finishes and modern
furniture. Use timber cabinetry with tactile work surfaces,
or include a simple set of tables with chairs or benches. There
are several opportunities to use rough-hewn elements in the
kitchen, now a very modern look, a million miles away from
the yellowy-pine of years ago tones tend to be moving into
the grey-neutral spectrum, with planked-effect construction.
If you can get your hands on a well-worn butchers block to
use as a work station, so much the better look in salvage
yards and antique markets for one of a kind pieces to treasure.

WALLS
Earthy shades can be a perfect backdrop if youre going for
a very traditional look, perhaps in a period home. However,
if you want a more current take on natural shades, think
about pale and fresh greens or rich ivories that err on the
grey side, rather than towards the Victorian yellowy creams
and beiges. Mauves, heathers and plums can add a modern
twist as well think of a matt, tweed-influenced colour
palette. Kitchen designers love the contrast of a slick, modern
kitchen in a classic setting and this can work well, especially
if original period architectural details are still present.

Textured woods are

more forgiving than glossy
lacquers and laminates.
BASINS & CABINETS
Solid surface material with the look of stone, or even real
stone basins are a popular choice, offering a practical and
realistic way of introducing tactile and natural materials into
the bathroom. Timber cabinetry, as with kitchens, also brings
in a neutral angle, and slightly textured wood surfaces are
often a lot more forgiving than glossy lacquers and laminates.
For a real back to nature feel, think about a solid teak or iroko
Japanese-style tub, or one of the latest wooden basins.

SURFACES
With the latest powerful showers featuring a strong spray,
its important to protect exposed surfaces. Tiled splashbacks
are a reliable choice for behind the basin and in the shower
area. For flooring, choose rigid vinyl tiles, planks or ceramic
tiles with the appearance of wood. Plus, to create a fully-clad
look for counter tops, walls and floors, look at solid surface
materials and quartz tiles in soft neutral colours like
mushroom, grey-beige and soft, mossy greens.

TAPS & FITTINGS

As with kitchens, theres delight and surprise with contrasting
styles and the desire to create a modern country bathroom
can accommodate beautiful, elegant taps and fittings. The
country element can be enhanced by use of materials that
connect with your homes surroundings. Chrome or steel
brassware and white sanitaryware is a simple choice, or use
rich timber finishes for cabinetry. Consider textured wall
finishes and veneered wall panels which can look stunning.

ALLEGRA

This stylish designer talks about her new

llegra Hicks, known for

her exquisite painterly
fabrics and designs,
studied textiles and
art in Milan and New York. She
launched her first range of rugs
and textiles in 1996 and now
designs for The Rug Company. She
has recently collaborated with
Made.com to produce an armchair
in one of her signature fabrics.
Born in Turin, she moved to
London following her marriage to
designer Ashley Hicks, son of
Interior Designer David Hicks and
grandson of Lord Mountbatten.
Allegra still lives in London
with the couples two daughters,
Angelica, 20, and Ambrosia, 15.
What is your favourite room?
My dining room. I radically
changed it a year-and-a-half ago,
covering the walls in raw silk
and having it embroidered with
beaded roses. The fireplace is
actually made of MDF but I
painted it with layers of oil
paint to give this marble effect.
What is your kitchen style?
The kitchen I have designed
at my other home in Naples
is quite decorative. There is an
18th century console with mirror
and lots of glass and Ive used an
old table and combined it with
wicker Pantone chairs.
What made you decide to pare
down your business?
I wasnt well a couple of years ago
and it led me to re-evaluate. I let go
of many of the unimportant and
uninteresting stresses and decided
to focus on the element I love most
which is the design. I am so lucky
because I get up in the morning
and I love what I do and loving
your work is heaven.
Have you ever designed
furniture before?
I did the little table and consoles
in my home years ago. I decided to
do a chair in my fabric design
because everyone needs a small
armchair that can be tucked away
in a corner of the house. I like the
rounded shape inspired by a Gio
Ponti sofa because, like my

fabrics, it doesnt pinpoint a

specific period and fits anywhere.
What is your colour palette?
Organic colours are my signature
style blues and greens; neutral
without being beige. I love
watercolours and all my
designs begin life that way.
Should design be expensive?
Good design is good design and
is nothing to do with price. If you
think about it, product design
evolved after the industrial
revolution to provide mass
produced furniture for people
who could not afford antiques or
handmade one-off items.
Some of my favourite items in
my home, like a stool in my sitting
room or coloured glasses in my
kitchen, were finds in random
shops and markets.
Are you an internet junkie?
I love using the internet for
research but I dont tweet. I take
pictures and do Instagram. I think
in images, so it feels natural to
express myself in pictures.
Which country do you
find most inspiring?
India. I went there on my
honeymoon for the first time and
remember feeling completely at
home. People there live very close
to one another and the senses are
heightened. The aesthetic is
very inspiring, the history is
fascinating and the philosophy
even more so I also adore the
combination of new and old in
Istanbul and the beautiful textiles.
English or Italian?
My work ethic is Anglo-Saxon but
my upbringing and sensibility is
Italian. I came here in my early
twenties and learned how to dress
in London. Everyone says Italians
dress well but they dress very
conventionally; people in London
are much more original. There
is an edge of eccentricity and
uniqueness that I value and
understand and has become
a part of my way of life.
