The technology quiz showed me that my biggest gap in technology understanding is in

audio/video use and integration of these components into presentations. This is a topic I have
never worked with before, but I have seen it done in my placement classroom. Therefore, I
reviewed some of the instructional videos my placement teacher had made, paying attention to
how she positioned the camera to avoid shadows on her work. I then set out to create my own
instructional video. Thinking I would kill two birds with one stone, I did my video on various
ways to factor a quadratic equation (I only learned one way, and as a teacher I will need to know
more than that). It took me a few tries to get the lighting and the volume and pacing right. I then
tested this video by showing it to one of my friends little siblings who is at the appropriate age
and had only a base knowledge of factoring. It ended up being successful! I was amazed at how
much time it took to get the whole video done. I will be practicing more to hopefully cut down
on that time and make the process more efficient.
This was only the beginning of filling in my technology education. The rest of what I
learn from the 21thingsforteachers website will be posted in my online portfolio. Shown below is
a shot of both the 21 things site and my portfolio.

Part I Technology Readiness and Targets for Improvement
Assess Yourself!
Review the Michigan K-12 Checklist, or an alternative more appropriate to your setting
on the Basics: Introduction page.
Copy and then Paste the URL to your Checklist source here:

Based on your review of the checklist(s), identify/describe in the chart below 5 skill areas
that you feel are most important to target for improvement for your students success
and your own. Identify the skills that you feel need your own personal improvement with
an X in the right-hand column.
Student Tech Readiness Skills My Students Need to Learn

I need to improve

Ability to use and modify spreadsheets and databases to

Ability to use source analyses to check reliability of sources

and references

Ability to use comments and track changes in word

Ability to integrate video and audio into presentations

Ability to format complicated text in word processors (e.g.

citations, equations)

Part II Basics: Technology Skills

1. Screenshots
Which tool will you will use for taking a screenshot?
Keyboard commands: FN + PRTSC
2. Browser Navigation
A. View the How To videos for Parts 1 of Browser Basics. Capture a screenshot showing one
of the techniques (resize the window, new tabs, new window, multiple windows side-by-side)
you learned and paste it below: After pasting it, please resize it so it is a smaller image.

Briefly describe what you did and what you like about it
I opened another tab, dragged it out to become a new window, and re-sized both windows so
that I could view them at the same time. This is useful so that I do not constantly have to be
switching from one tab to another; I can have both visible at the same time.

B. Browser Navigation (Part 2)

View the How To videos for Parts 2 of Browser Basics.
a. Capture a screenshot showing a new Browser technique you learned (zoom in and out, find,
history) and paste it below: After pasting it, please resize it so it is a smaller image.

Briefly describe what you did and what you like about it
I searched the web page for the words how to and zoomed in on the first occurrence of the
phrase. I like this ctrl+f function because it will be useful if I am attempting to find specific
information on a long web page or document.
3. Basic Browser Shortcuts
My computer: I will be using a _____PC________ (ex: Mac, PC, Chromebook, Surface Pro,
etc.) for the majority of the work for this course.
My favorite browser is: (ex: Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc.)
_______________Google Chrome_________________
Post a screenshot of your favorite shortcut, and briefly describe its use:

These shortcuts are to zoom in and out within a window.

Part III: Implementation
1. ISTE Teacher Standards
A. As you review these ISTE-T standards provide an example of at least one thing you do in
your teaching. See the sample provided below and then share the your own example:
Sample
Standard: 2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments
Performance indicator addressed: I selected a.
Standard 2.a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and
resources to promote student learning and creativity.
My Lesson Example: I teach a math unit on geometric shapes. I have students use the digital camera
to take pictures of different features or items around our school. I recently started having them edit the
images to create a collage for different types of angles to post in the room.
Future Lesson:
Standard 2.c.: Customize and personalize the activity to meet diverse learning styles and working
strategies and abilities.
There are only two cameras available but our school is going to let students bring their own mobile
devices. Id like to customize the geometry lesson so they can bring pictures of geometric figures they
take outside school and find a way to share the images to add to our lesson, like on an online bulletin
board.

Briefly describe an activity or lesson that meets one of the five ISTE-T standards you teach in
the table below:

ISTE Standard addressed by my activity or lesson

1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
Performance indicator(s) addressed: b
Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital
tools and resources.
My lesson description:
In my 10th grade math placement class, we were working with angles in geometry. One
hands-on project we did was give each group of students a problem (either in pool, mini-golf,
or boomerang). We had them set up the problem on a tablet and use various resources on
the tablets to come up with at least three solutions to each problem. After that, each group
had to come up with a problem and give it to another group. In this way, the students were
not only solving problems but learning to identify the types of problems that could be solved
using this particular technology.
Future Lesson: (target and describe an additional performance indicator from that standard for
a future lesson)
Standard: 1 d
To meet this standard, the project could be adapted so that students construct their knowledge
of the topic through the tablets before solving the problems or even through activities set up in
the classroom.

B. How I would rate myself based on the ISTE-Teacher Standards at this point using a 5-point

Your score/reflection:
3. I know where I am at, and I know where I need to get to. I have the base knowledge but the
advanced knowledge is not there yet. Hopefully this class will fix that.
2. Best Practice Connections
Select from one of the lesson/teaching examples you provided in the ISTE-T section, or another
from your teaching. Identify and give an example of three of the nine research-based best
practice teaching and learning strategies (identified in the Framework for Instructional Planning)
and a technology resource you use (or might use) in the chart below. You may find it helpful to
refer to the techbestpractice site.

It is important in math to avoid using only

linguistic and straight visuals to teach.
Using more interactive and interesting

In younger classes (middle

Final Reflection

modification

Based on the resources in Basics, and your own experience, reflect on how thoughtful
integration of best practice and technology can improve your instructional practice. Give some
details.
Instructional practice can be greatly improved by proper use of technology. For one, it can be
used to keep students engaged where they may otherwise be inclined to wander. Technology
also opens doors that were otherwise solidly closed in education. Allowing students to perform
virtual experiments or to research current events while in the classroom provides new avenues
for instruction and learning that can greatly enhance the students knowledge and
understanding.
