MakerSpace & 3D Printer Proposal

1. What are you proposing?
I am proposing a Makerspace classroom for students and a 3D
printer. We currently have an unused science lab that we can possibly
transform into a MakerSpace as you see below or we can implement it into
our 2nd grade afternoon rotations. I will be the teacher teaching and utilizing
the MakerSpace concept in my rotation, while the other three second grade
teachers will be teaching science, art and physical education.

2. What are your objectives?

The objective is to create a Makerspace community with centers
and tools.
To combine manufacturing equipment, community, and education
for the purposes of enabling community members to design, prototype and
create manufactured works that wouldnt be possible to create with the
resources available to individuals working alone.
To represent the democratization of design, engineering,
fabrication and education. They are a fairly new phenomenon, but are
beginning to produce projects with significant national impacts.
To increase STEM+A (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Mathematics and Art) opportunities as they align with the 2015-2018 goals of
our school district. (Lakeside Union School District)
Provide a 3D printer to further our current implementation of
technology in the classroom.

3. Which laws/policies are driving your recommendation?

44730. (a) The Superintendent of Public Instruction shall allocate funds appropriated for
purposes of this chapter to school districts for the purposes of funding the Education
Technology Staff Development Program in an equal amount per pupil in grades 4 to 8,
inclusive, based upon the enrollment in all eligible schools in those grades, as determined
by the State Department of Education, as of October of the prior fiscal year, but the total
amount allocated to an eligible school district shall not be greater than an amount equal to
twenty dollars ($20) per pupil in grades 4 to 8, inclusive, in the eligible schools in the
school district.

(b) The State Department of Education shall monitor this

program to ensure that an equitable share of the funding allocated pursuant to
this chapter serves low-income disadvantaged pupils.

51870. For the purposes of this article, "technology" means

technology-based materials, equipment, systems, and networks.

51871.5.
o (a) It is the intent of the Legislature that education
technology planning be accomplished in the most comprehensive
manner possible. To that end, the current practice of developing
education technology plans for each funding program should be
replaced with a comprehensive local planning process that will enable
school districts to apply for grants on an ongoing basis and assist in
utilizing available education technology programs.
o (b) On or after January 1, 2005, as a precondition
to receiving a technology grant administered by the department, a
school district shall have a current three- to five-year education
technology plan. The state board may waive this requirement if it
determines that the applicant school district made a good faith effort to
develop a plan, but for reasons beyond its control, the district cannot
develop the plan before receipt of the technology grant.

o (c) On or before July 1, 2007, the Superintendent

shall develop guidelines and criteria for inclusion in the education
technology plan required pursuant to subdivision (b). The guidelines
and criteria shall include a component to educate pupils and teachers
on the appropriate and ethical use of information technology in the
classroom, Internet safety, the manner in which to avoid committing
plagiarism, the concept, purpose, and significance of a copyright so
that pupils are equipped with the skills necessary to distinguish lawful
from unlawful online downloading, and the implications of illegal
peer-to-peer network file sharing.
o A school district that, on July 1, 2008, has a current
three- to five-year education technology plan that complies with
subdivision
o (b) is not required to comply with this subdivision
until after its plan expires or is voluntarily replaced. (d) On or after
January 1, 2005, the Superintendent shall ensure that each school
district has access to technical assistance and an approved online
technology plan builder that the department determines is in
compliance with state and federal requirements.
o (e) The department shall maintain a record of
school districts that have a three- to five-year education technology
plan and shall make that information available to interested public
agencies.
4. What do you expect to achieve?
My expectations are to continue growing our school in the area of
technology.
o To experience it creatively and use it personally.
o My expectations are to continue growing our school in the
area of technology.
o To incorporate more project based learning.
o For students to seek out opportunities to learn to do new
things, especially through hands on, DIY (do it yourself) interactions.
o Experimental play
o For students to take risks and learn from failure to achieve
success.
o Build traits collectively such as grit, creativity, curiosity,
open-mindedness, persistence, social responsibility, and teamwork.
o To collaborate and give advice.
o 21st century skills
o The ability to acquire in-depth inquiry
o Driving question
o The motivation to need to know
o Students have a voice & choice
o The ability to reflect and revise

o To produce something and present to a public audience

o Communication skills and a deeper understanding of
technology
o Develop a social consciousness
o Develop lofty goals
o The process of design to production
Measurable outcomes will be based on student, teacher and parent
feedback as they will be critical for future modifications.
