Essential Learning Outcomes for Instrumental Music (Band)


Fifth Grade
Instrumental Technique
Students will:
Produce a grade-level appropriate tone
Perform music with time signatures of 4/4, 2/4, and 3/4
Perform with appropriate articulation (i.e.-tonguing)
Perform and understand the concepts taught in grade level appropriate music
Demonstrate appropriate instrument care
Demonstrate good posture and hand position
Perform the Concert Bb Major Scale
Reading and Notation
Students will:
Identify notes on the staff.
Identify and define the symbols for whole, half, and quarter notes/rests, eighth
notes, and dotted half notes.
Identify dynamic markings of piano, mezzo forte, and forte.
Identify and define the following music symbols and terminology: clef sign,
measure, bar line, double bar line, staff, time signature, repeat sign, first/second
endings, multiple measure rest, fermata, breath marks.
Performance
Students will:
Perform for an audience
Demonstrate appropriate rehearsal and concert etiquette
Demonstrate the ability to perform as a member of an ensemble
Listening and Analysis
Students will:
Recognize a good tone
Recognize and identify errors in an instrumental performance

Sixth Grade
Instrumental Technique
Students will:
Perform the Concert Eb Major Scale
Produce a grade-level appropriate tone
Perform with appropriate articulation (i.e.-slurring)
Perform and understand the concepts taught in grade level appropriate music
Demonstrate appropriate instrument care
Reading and Notation
Students will:
Identify dotted quarter notes.
Identify the following music symbols and terminology: first/second endings,
crescendo/decrescendo, accent, D.C. al Fine.
Identify tempo markings
Performance
Students will:
Perform for an audience
Demonstrate appropriate rehearsal and concert etiquette
Demonstrate the ability to blend and balance within an ensemble
Listening and Analysis
Students will:
Demonstrate the ability to blend and balance within an ensemble
Demonstrate the ability to play independent parts within an ensemble
Recognize and identify errors in an instrumental performance

Seventh Grade
Instrumental Technique
Students will:
Produce a grade-level appropriate tone
Perform the Concert Ab and F Major Scales on their chosen instrument
Perform with appropriate articulation (i.e.-staccato)
Perform and understand the concepts taught in grade level appropriate music
Demonstrate appropriate instrument care
Reading and Notation
Students will:
Understand time signatures with 2 or 4 on the bottom.
Identify dynamic markings of mezzo piano, fortissimo, and pianissimo.
Identify notes on ledger lines above and below the staff
Demonstrate an understanding of key signatures
Identify and define the symbols for sixteenth notes, dotted quarter-eighth
rhythms, triplets, D.C. al Coda, D.S. al fine
Performance
Students will:
Perform for an audience
Demonstrate appropriate rehearsal and concert etiquette
Demonstrate the ability to blend and balance within an ensemble
Understand the conductors role and have the ability to follow non-verbal clues
and gestures
Listening and Analysis
Students will:
Demonstrate the ability to blend and balance within an ensemble
Demonstrate the ability to play independent parts within an ensemble
Recognize and identify errors in an instrumental performance

Eighth Grade
Instrumental Technique
Students will:
Produce a grade-level appropriate tone
Perform the Concert G and C Major Scales and the Chromatic Scale
Perform with appropriate articulation (i.e-legato and tenuto tonguing)
Perform and understand the concepts taught in grade level appropriate music
Demonstrate appropriate instrument care
Reading and Notation
Students will:
Understand time signatures with 8 on the bottom.
Identify and define the tempo markings Andante, Moderato, Allegro, Ritardando,
Rallentando, and Accelerando
Identify and define syncopation
Identify and define the notation for dotted eighth-sixteenth
Performance
Students will:
Perform for an audience
Demonstrate appropriate rehearsal and concert etiquette
Demonstrate the ability to blend and balance within an ensemble
Understand the conductors role and have the ability to follow nonverbal clues
and gestures
