I am so excited to be starting a new school year, and I am looking forward to having your child in

my class. Students will be busy with many things this year in their Literature and Grammar
Classes as they grow intellectually as well as spiritually. If you ever have a question, comment, or
concern please feel free to e-mail me at lbishop@stjohnb.com. Please go to RenWeb and the class
website, www.mrsbishopclass.weebly.com, to see assignments, announcements, and your child's
progress.
General Information:
Grading: Grades will be determined for both Literature and Grammar as
follows:
Major Assignments (Tests/Papers/Projects): 60%
Minor Assignments (Classwork/Quizzes): 40%
Students will take a semester exam, which counts as 10% of the
semester grade.
Tests and other graded assignments are sent home to parents in
Wednesday Folders. Please go over each test with your child; it is also
important to save returned tests to prepare for exams.
Homework: Homework will be checked for completion. It will be used as an extension of the daily
lesson and will be used in class the following day. Students are expected to complete every
homework assignment. Students who do not complete their homework will be expected to attend
work sessions at times arranged with Mrs. Bishop until the assignment is completed.
Late Work: All assignments (major and minor) must be completed. Points (up to 10% per day) will
be deducted for lateness on projects and papers. Students with missing assignments will be
expected to attend work sessions at times arranged with Mrs. Bishop until the assignment is
completed.
Retake/Redo Policy: For every test and writing assignment, students who score a D (73-65) will
have the option to retake or redo the assignment; students who score an F (64 and below) will be
required to retake or redo the assignment. The retake/redo will replace the original grade, up to
a 74 (C). For tests, students can earn no more than half-credit for each corrected question. No
extra credit assignments are available.
Our Middle School Rule:

Infractions of the class rules or expectations in the St. Johns Code of Conduct will be
documented. Consequences will be given according to the middle school discipline policy, which is
outlined on page 13 of the Parent/Student Handbook.

Class Routines and Procedures:

Entering a Classroom: Walk into the classroom quietly and ready to learn! Pick up the materials
Mrs. Bishop has ready for you in the bins by the door, and then walk to your seat. Write your
homework in your planner, get out/prepare the materials listed on the board (or borrow from the
class supply shelf), and begin your warm-up. Stay in your seat once you begin your warm-up.
Using the Rest Room: When you need to use the rest room, raise your hand to ask. If given
permission, sign out on the clipboard and Whos Out white board. Each student will be allowed
five sign-outs per quarter. If you are unsure whether it is a good time to ask to use the rest
room, check the guidelines on the poster hanging on Mrs. Bishops podium (individual work time is
usually an appropriate time to ask).
Leaving the Classroom at the End of the Period: At the end of the period, Mrs. Bishop will
direct you to pack up and return borrowed materials. Because we respect our classroom and take
pride in its appearance, this is also the time to push in your chair (or put it on top of the desks if
it is the last period of the day), straighten the desks, and throw all trash away.
Making up Work after an Absence: If you have been absent from class when a major project or
test was due/ given, you will be expected to turn it in/ take it on the day you return to class.
Students have one day for each day missed to complete classwork assignments. Missed work can
be found in folders by the door (labeled by day). Please also be sure to pick up While You Were
Out sheet and check RenWeb for homework assignments.
Combined Literature and Grammar Binder: Students should have their binder with them at all
times. Materials are to be kept unless told otherwise; there will be a Table of Contents on the
class website listing the order in which items should be present. At the end of each quarter,
there will be a notebook cleanout. Binders should be organized as follows:
Package of 5 tab dividers, labeled o 40 Book Challenge (8th Grade); Literature Warm-ups (7th Grade)
o Literature Notes & Classwork
o Grammar Warm-ups & Free Writes
o Grammar Notes & Classwork
o Notebook Paper (8th Grade); Reference (7th Grade)
Materials for Class: In addition to their Literature and Grammar binder, students are expected
to have their supply pouch, planner, SSR book, and college-ruled notebook paper with them in
class. For Literature, students will be expected to purchase any novels we will be reading in class;
the titles will be announced well in advance of the date they are needed.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.
