Rationales of Genre 1 (Checklist)

For the Florida State University Law School Application genre used to teach
my audience what the necessary steps are into applying and becoming
accepted into FSU Law I used two separate colors. I used standard black font
because its the most common and appropriate for this kind of genre and
audience, but I also used red. I highlighted the certain dates and deadlines in
red to illustrate the importance and to gravitate more attention to them. The
font I choose for the entire genre was New Times Roman. Once again similar
to the black font, its the most standard, professional looking and appropriate
for my audience. Also being the freshman in college they are, they need to
become acquainted with MLA formatted characteristics in word documents. I
also bolded several items in my checklist. The certain things I bolded were
the particular required documents and items used in the applications
process. Things like resume, personal statement, transcript, and letters of
recommendation were bolded. The arrangement of the document I used was
a centered title to introduce the topic of my genre, and the following
information was left sided as any usual checklist is. The organization of my
genre was in chronological order. In my first draft of this genre I just bullet
pointed the necessary steps in my checklist, once reviewing feedback from
my peers I replaced the bullet points with numbers because they follow a
sequence and timely order of the required items to complete and do. This
organized my genre in a more accommodating way for my audience to follow
in order. The only image I choose to incorporate in this genre was a small
picture of a check mark on the top right of my genre right next to my title. I
choose this because it suited the application checklist well, and added a little
something that could appeal to my audience but not so much that my genre
lost its characteristic of looking clean and professional. Presenting all of this
information together in the unity I did showed the desired common goal my
audience has. It showed my audience that these steps and elements
combined together are the pathway to becoming eventually accepted into
FSU Law School. Also, something interesting about this particular genre is
everyone in my audience would eventually have to do this checklist. I was
teaching something so personalized yet synchronized that it engaged and
unified my audience. The context I choose was the required items needed in
the admissions process, and explanation of what they were, and tips and
tricks on how to perfect them to the best of their ability. I did this to not only

inform, but to help and assist my audience in the most efficient way that
would eventually lead them to the goal. This information in the context is
also very credible considering it came from the most reliable source for this
genre, the Florida State University College of Law Website and Viewbook of
2015. The positioning I integrated into this genre was common, however I did
intentionally add the deadlines and dates at the end of each step because it
holds a high order of importance, and the last thing any audience reads is
the last thing they are going to remember.

Rationales of Genre 2 (PowerPoint)

In my genre 2 I chose only one color, and that was black again. Because my
audience was already very educated and scholarly I decided to keep it
standard considering they didnt need much to gravitate their attention, and
I also received feedback from my professor that the previously colors I tried
using were honestly too distracting, especially for this particular audience.
The font I used in this genre was Garamond Black. The reason for this was
because the certain style of the PowerPoint presentation I used had this font
set automatically, and also this allowed very little leeway for my audience to
take a step back from the professionalism and focus on something not so
structural and common. I bolded and underlined essential things I thought
were important and needed to stand out and only add emphasis on. This way
to keep my audiences attention and illustrate the important aspects of each
slide. The layout I chose was each slide was a title and context slide. This is
also common use of PowerPoint and allowing a title is a predicator to my
audience of what the context of the slide is about. The organization I used for
this genre was generated by what I felt was an order of importance. I
introduced FSU Law Schools recent acceptance data to show my audience
what they are expected to accomplishment, then I explained the admirable
qualities about the school to show them why they chose the right school. I
then mentioned the values the school has, and how each students can
display those values during the admissions process. Following it up by the
actions they need to take now as an undergraduate student, and a beautiful
map outlining the features of the law school. The only image I included in
this genre was the picture of the geographic layout of FSU Law School, I did
not think any other images were necessary. The context I chose to
incorporate into this genre was similar to the context of my previous genre,
which contained the requirements of FSU Law School. However, in this genre
I went above and beyond, with the feedback given by my instructor, and
painted the picture of why FSU has such a selective process. Why they hold
the integrity of their students and school to such a high standard. I then went
on to explain how each student could radiate those values into their personal

connections and communications in the application process. I enlarged the

titles of each slide, just as a habit of function, as well as to bring the slide
and its main ideas together. Something I else I particularly enlarged were
the values I stated FSU Law School possessed. I did this to not only fill in
space, but to really identify to my audience how much of an impact these
values will have on their acceptance. For example, you may have a fantastic
gpa and test scores, but if you were not involved in any extracurricular
activities your application may be denied. I thought this was an important
concept to teach my audience in that every value is weighted the same.
