Summary

StudentswillbeusingtheirCornellnotes,whichwerecompletedforhomeworktocontinuetheirstudyontheAncient
NearEast.TheywillbeabletoexplainhowtheworldsfirstcivilizationdevelopedinSouthwestAsia,intherivervalleyin
anareaknownastheFertileCrescent.Studieswillincludehowthegeographyprovidedafoundationforagriculture,
whichservedasabasisforthegrowthofcivilization.

IMPLEMENTATION
LearningContext

StudentswillbeutilizingtheircompletedCornellnotesinatutorial,wheretheywilldiscusswiththeirpeersand
encouragehigherlevelsofcriticalthinkingthroughquestioningtechniquesusingCosta'sLevel'sofQuestioning.The
Cornellnoteswillbeassignedtheclassperiodbefore,andstudentsaretoarrivetoclasswiththeirnotescompleteand
readytouse.Thiswillhelpstudentsprepareforthechapterassessment(summative).

Procedure

Studentswillbeginclasswiththe"WordWithintheWord"opener.
Studentshomeworkwillbecheckedforcompletion,topreventstudentsfromcompletingassignmentsduringclass,and
toaidinmakinganylastminutechangestostudentgroupings.
Teacherwillreviewexpectationsfortheassignment,ensuringstudentsrememberproperconductduringthetutorial.
Thisincludespropergroupworkskills,andreviewingCosta'sLevelsofQuestioning.
Teacherwillreviewthetimeallottedforthisassignment,whichdependingonstudentpopulationshouldnotexceed30
35minutes.
Studentswillbegroupedeitheratrandomorbyteacherchoosing.
StudentswilljoinwiththeirgroupsandbegintheTutorialFormworksheet.
Afterstudentshavecompletedtheirleveltwoorthreequestions,andthesubsequentdiscussion,theywillindpendently,
createsixlevelonequestions,referringtotheirgroupmatesiftheyneedassistance.
StudentswillreturntotheirseatsandcompletetheirSRC(Summary,Reflection,Connection),andtheparticipation
ratingsfortheremainderoftheclassperiod.
Studentswhodonotfinishwillbeallowedtofinishtheassignmentforhomework.
