Math Parent Letter

This document is created to give parents and students a
better understanding of the math concepts found in Eureka
Math ( 2015 Great Minds.) that is also posted as the
Engage New York material which is taught in the
classroom. Module 1 of Eureka Math (Engage New York)
covers Properties of Multiplication and Division and
Solving Problems with Units of 2-5 and 10.

Vocabulary Words
Array repeated rows of numbers or objects

Standards(OA.1, OA.3)

multiplication.
Students will be introduced to multiplication with
the concept of repeated addition. Draw a picture
to show 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12. Then write a
multiplication sentence to represent the picture.
The size of each group is
3, because there are 3
circles in each group. (In the
repeated addition sentence
3 is the number repeated)
The number of groups needed is 4, because there
are 4 equal groups of three. (In the repeated
addition problem we see 3 four times) Think: 4
times I see 3; 4 x 3 = 12.

Objective 2: Relate multiplication to the array model.

Multiply /Multiplication- an operation showing
how many times a number is added to itself

Students will be introduced to arrays as a visual

tool to help solve word problems.

Equal groups same number of objects in each

group

Tommy collects baseball

cards. He arranges them in
4 rows of 5. Draw Tommys
array to show how many
baseball cards he has all
together. Then write a
multiplication sentence to
describe the array.

Factor number of groups and the number in each

group
Expression- a number or numbers that express a
number, for example 5x4
Equation a statement that two expressions are
equal, for example 5 x 4 = 20
Number sentence- An equation with both
expressions are numbers and can represent a single
number, for example 5x4=2x10, 20=20
Divide/Division/Partition separate into equal
groups

Product- The answer to a multiplication

problem

Objective 3: Interpret the meaning of factors

Students will gain a better understanding of the
meaning of the factors. Students will be able to
analyze the number of groups and the size of the
group.
There are 3 balloons in each circle. How many
balloons are in three circles?

Quotient- The answer to a division problem

Row- The across portion of the array
Column- the vertical portion of the array

Number of groups: 3 Size of group: 3

3x3=9.
There are 9 balloons all together.

objects in array models.

Standards (OA.2 OA.6)

Students will learn how to find the size of a group by

analyzing the total amount and the number of
groups.

Standards (OA.1, OA.7. OA.5, OA.3, OA.4)

Students will understand the commutative property

of multiplication by using skip counting.
Skip count by 2s.
2,4,6,8

Jane has 10 star that are divided into 2 groups.

There are 5 stars in each group.

Objective 2: Understand the meaning of the

Commutative Property

Skip count by 2s.

4,8

4x2=2x4

2x4=8

Objective 2: Find related multiplication facts by

unknown as the number of groups in division.

adding and subtracting equal groups in array models.

Students will learn how to find the number of groups

by analyzing the total amount and the size of each
group.

Students will learn how to compose and decompose

an array model using related multiplication facts.

4

Divide 10 stars in groups 5.

There are 2 groups of 5 stars.
105=2

Objective 3: Interpret the unknown in division using

the array model.
Students will be able to relate a division situation to
an array model.
For example, we will use the above example and
relate it to an array model, There are 2 groups and 5
stars in each group.

5 in each group

2 groups
2x5=10

(2+2+2+2)+(2+2)=12
4 twos +2 twos =6
6 x 2=12

Objective 3: Model the distributive property with

arrays to decompose units as a strategy to multiply.
Students will be able to break apart or decompose
an array model into friendly multiplication
equations.
(4x2)=8
(2x2)
=4

(4 x 2) + (2 x 2)= 8 + 4
6 x 2=12

groups)

There are 8 circles stacked in 4

groups. How many circles are in
each row?

Each box has 2
