The netball girls of HS Duineveld and HS Upington are raring to go ahead of their FNB Netball
Classic Clash in Upington on Saturday.
Upington ended a seven-year winless drought in 2014 when they managed to overcome Duineveld
and their coach Christine Esterhuizen believes her experienced side will have what it takes to make
it two in a row.
"Last year [2014] was the first time I got to experience an FNB Netball Classic Clash between the
schools and it was also the first time in seven years that Upington beat Duineveld, which bodes well
for us this year.
"We are fortunate to be fielding a very experienced team with five of our players being in matric and
was part of the winning team in 2014. But that result will have no baring on Saturday's match
because anything can happen on the day. We know the match will definitely be fast paced and a little
physical - which is something you don't expect from a netball game.
"We feel like there will be more pressure on us because of what happened last year but we are ready
for the challenge," Esterhuizen said.
Her counterpart, Riana Bekker faces a challenge of her own as she recently lost a crucial player to
an ankle injury and has been vigorously trying to find a replacement in a key position.
"We lost our Wing Defence to an ankle injury and it has been a little tough finding a replacement
because it is such a specialist position. But we will not let that have any affect on the way we will
approach this game.
"Our team is a little inexperienced but we have a nice balance of Grade 10 and 11 pupils, which
bodes well for us in a few years. We are heading into the match a little blind because we do not
know what to expect but it is going to be a nice challenge. Our aim will be to go out there, give a
good account of ourselves and prove that we will fight until the end," Bekker stated.
