COMBINATION LOCK USING

D FLIP FLOP
Group # 4

Introduction
Electronic locks are the most sophisticated of all the locks. This is because unlike
the two other types that require a sort of key to open them, this doesnt require a key so
that the issue of keys gets missing does not come into play. These types of locks are
driven basically by electronic means and they are used mostly in industrial areas and
areas where a high level of security is needed.
The use of electronic combination locks in modern day technology cannot be
overemphasized. They prevent losses to theft, carelessness etc. Also being that they
are electronically powered, they provide a better and safer security system than all other
locks. However, the electronic combination lock though very good has some drawbacks
which are: (1) being that they are powered by electronic means, they are susceptible to
power failure. To avoid this, the circuit needs to use both AC main supply and also D.C.
supply from a battery or any other source. (2) Since it has to be mounted at a point
outside the building, a lot of undesirables may be found tapping on the buttons and
even resulting in the damage of the control unit mounted with it. To avoid this, the
control units need to be placed away from the input unit.
Circuit Diagram
D-type bistables can easily be used to make a combination lock. You can make a
4-digit combination lock in which the keys representing the code digits must be entered
in the correct order. Pressing the key for any digit which is not part of the code RESETs
all four D-types.

The D-input of the first D-type is held HIGH. When the first digit of the
combination is pressed, output

goes HIGH. If the second digit is the next key

pressed, the second D-type will be SET and so on. Pressing any of the unselected keys
gives a HIGH at the RESET inputs of all four bistables, and all the

outputs revert to

LOW.
Once the four digits of the code have been entered in the correct sequence, the
lock output goes HIGH and will remain HIGH until an unselected key is pressed. The
system could be extended to provide an automatic RESET after a delay.
