Preventative health
Preventative health practices aim to prevent illness by
encouraging the promotion and maintenance of good
health and wellbeing.
Australia is experiencing record high levels of people
becoming overweight or obese.
Obesity is a major cause of disease and disability.
It is important that we all practise preventative health to
prevent obesity.

Preventative health examples


Preventative health is about maintaining your body and
good health throughout your lifetime.
You can do this by:
enjoying a healthy, balanced diet (making good choices
for both foods and drinks)
participating in physical activity
practising good daily health habits, such as brushing and
flossing your teeth, and wearing a hat outside
getting plenty of sleep
seeing your doctor for regular checkups, even when you
are not sick.

the individual

Keeps people in the healthy weight range.


Lowers the risk of developing illness and disease.
Helps maintain good physical, social and mental health.
Raises the quality of life, especially in old age.
Maintains a stronger immune system, to help us to
recover from illness more quickly.
Helps us to feel good and enjoy daily activities.
Means that we spend less money on healthcare costs.

Preventative health
benefits for
the community
All Australians share responsibility for our populations health.
Preventative health practices benefit the entire community.
With fewer people in the healthcare system, it will be more
efficient and affordable.
If our healthcare system is used less, it will cost less to run,
which will result in lower taxes for people to pay.
Healthy people are able to work and have fewer sick days,
which benefits our economy.

Sustainability
Ways you can look after our environment through
preventative practices:
grow your own food or buy organic food that has been
produced in a sustainable way
consume food and drink that does not have packaging
drink tap water instead of bottled water
reduce waste and get a compost bin
reduce, reuse and recycle.
