Guimares // 10-13 July

Date Youth Exchange

Arrival Date: 8 October 2015

Departure Dates: 16 October 2015

Project Summary

This Youth Exchange is called Art in Action - How can art have a positive impact in social issues? and it will be
held in Guimares, Portugal in the Autumn of 2015. The activities will be in October 9-15 (without travel days)
official ending in 15 of October, with a final presentation of the works of the participants. It will involve 6 countries
with 5 participant each, Portugal, Netherlands, Italy, Estonia, Slovenia and Turkey. It aims to promote an active
citizenship between and with young European, and give them the space and opportunity to discover, reflect and
debate about topics related with the impact of art in social issues and projects. Moreover they will reflect in the
role as citizens, cultural identity and our values/priorities.
Being a European citizen direct you to a position where you are more confronted with different realities and more
aware of social differences and multiculturalism. Moreover it calls your attention to the need of more sustainable
behaviors and need of integration and equality. The system used in these projects creates a safe space to discuss
sensitive subjects and is opened minded to creative solutions. The usage of arts and creativity is one of our main
languages supported by non-formal education methods.
We want that artists find their ways to be taken serious by the community and find possibilities of doing
meaningful artistic projects that can help their work perspectives and improve the society they live in. We believe
that this attitude create a double positive effect, both in the key actors and in their target groups. The learning is
mutual and come from sharing experiences and needs. We would like to give the possibility to youngsters of
focusing in the social field (poverty, lack of integration, inequality...) and environmental field (usage of eco-friendly
behaviors, recycled materials...)
By helping others with something that is part of you personal skills and interest, adds value to what you create, to
what you share and what you take from it. We expect to generate an experience of great personal and
professional growth with significant development of skills and competences that promote a better understanding
about social issues and how we can take action in our communities. The target group is European Artists, with
experience in European programs or in the social field, or other youngsters that would like to explore this
thematic.

Objectives

The aim of this project is to allow youngsters to understand the problems that surround them (social differences,
problems of integration, poverty, environmental issues), and create awareness of the personal impact that they
can have as key actors in their own local realities. In order to let them feel comfortable acting in fields that they
are not used to, we will use the ways of expression that they are familiar with, like art and also non-formal
education. Therefore, we want to gather artists from different fields and realities and create a learning platform
where organizations and artists work together to improve a specific situation in one single week. Since the time is
short we would like to prove that even with little resources and not too much time simple actions can make the
difference. The main idea is that the youngsters can feel and understand the social issues present locally, in this
case in Guimaraes, Portugal, (location of the activities) and find means to take part of it and create positive impact.
The goal is to bring solutions, raise awareness or find support through creative and artistic methods. We want to
give space to the youngsters to choose the thematic that they are interested in and the creative tools they want to
use. This attitude aims to be inspirational to act in their own countries and allow youngsters to fell capable to
participate in their communities.
