Aerospace/Astronautical

By: Nathan Eckhoff

Definition
Aerospace Engineering- is the primary field of engineering concerned
with the development of aircraft and spacecraft
Its divided into Aeronautical (within Earths atmosphere)and
Astronautical (outside of Earths Atmosphere)
Aerospace engineers design aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, missiles,
and national defense projects

Education and Description

An Aerospace Engineer is required to have at least a bachelors degree

It is possible to receive a Doctorates degree in this field
Aeronautical engineers typically work on aircraft and missiles
Astronautical engineers typically work with spacecraft and satellites
Engineers typically are experts in:

Aerodynamics
Thermodynamics
Celestial mechanics
Flight machines
Propulsion
Acoustics
Guidance and Control Systems

Description and Pay

Engineers will study Civil, Electrical, Chemical, and Mechanical
engineering
Between 2012-2022jobs in Aerospace engineering are expected to
grow by 7%
The term Spacecraft wasnt used until the launch of Sputnik I
Aerospace engineers make between $100,000- $150,000 a year

Timeline
Rockets were launched
but never really reached
beyond Earths
atmosphere

Just 4 years after Alan

Shepard, Neil Armstrong
was the 1st man to set foot
on the moon

Until Sputnik I was

launched, the term
spacecraft wasnt
really used

A year after the

launched of Sputnik I,
the USA launches
Explorer I
The launch of
Explorer I
launched the
Soviet Union and
the USA into the
Space Race

Between the Apollo program In 1981, the space

and the shuttle program
shuttle Columbia
there were many satellites
was launched
launched

In 1961, Alan
Shepard becomes
the second man in
space

After the Challenger

and Columbia
disasters, the shuttle
program was retired
in 2012

2015
To this day NASA
hasnt made manned
launches

Why I Like It
Ive really liked the NASA launches, and have always dreamed about
being an astronaut
So when I researched some, I found out that most astronauts studied
Aeronautical engineering.
I also was fascinated in the rockets that human were launched in
Thats when I found out about re-entry and I didnt want to take the
chance of burning up or bouncing of the atmosphere
So I decided I wanted to become an Aerospace Engineer

Why I Like It
So since 3rd grade, Ive developed a cocoon of knowledge around me
of facts
In 5th grade, I did a research project on JFK
In 7th grade, I did a research project on the Space Race
In 8th Grade, I did both. I did a research project on JFK and the Space
Race, and I did a research project on moving forward
We were assigned to research a person (Neil Armstrong), a career
(Aerospace engineering),and a college (NCSU)

Why I Like It
For me Ive always planned ahead, my career, where I want to go to
college, everything that is at least a year ahead of where I am now
Aerospace engineering has been a life goal for me, and Id hate to give
it up.
My friends dont see me as an engineer but they do see me doing
something in space.
Who knows, I might even get the chance to fly in space?
