and when were dying, it is in the Lord.
Both in our living and in our dying,
We belong to God, we belong to God.

*Passing of the Peace

*The Call to Worship:
This is the house of God, the home of all. All who are
buffeted and embattled by the storms of life, come seek
refuge here. All who are weakened by hardship and pain,
come seek comfort here. All who are puzzled and perplexed
by our complex world, come find clarity here. All who are
weary and eroded of strength, come find rest here. All who
are overconfident, brash and boisterous, come find stillness
2

here. All who are uncertain and find iit hard to believe, come
find welcome here. Come, here we will learn how to live in
faith and truth.

*The Opening Prayer:

God of grace, we come to worship today so that we might be
held in community. We come to be cared for in our sorrow,
we come to share our joy, we come seeking strength and
renewal, we come because we long to be in relationship with
you, we come blessed because we know your generosity is
not contained only to ourselves, but your arms open wide
and gather all that is into your home. Even the sparrow finds
a nest here. So with thankful hearts, we join the saints of
the church past, present and future, in singing your
praise and worshiping you, offering our gift:
Our Father, who art in heaven...

Your Work O God Needs Many Hands

VU 537

Your work, O God, needs many hands to help you

everywhere, and some there are who cannot serve unless our
gifts we share.
Because we love you and your work, our offering now we
make; be pleased to use it as your own, we ask for Jesus
sake.

*The Prayer of Dedication:

We give these gifts for the work and worship of the
church. May they be used to help where the need is the
greatest, where the love is lacking most, to move your
realm further into this world. AMEN!

Reach out to others so all the world can see.

Global Mission and Service

Take Root, Bear Fruit

The United Church of Canadas partnership with Chinese
Christians began in the 1880s, well before 1925 and the union of
churches that formed the United Church. Canadian Presbyterians,
Methodists, and Congregationalists all sent missionaries to China
to work in evangelism, education, and medical services.
When Christianity entered China, it was linked with the West and
with colonialism. Some in China viewed it as a foreign religion
not suited to the context and culture of their country. Today, the
United Churchs Mission and Service partners are Chinese
Christian Protestants who engage in evangelism, education,
medical services, and much more!
One of these partners is the China Christian Council / Three-Self
Patriotic Movement (based on the three principles of selfgovernance, self-support, and self-propagation). It organizes and
provides support for Protestant churches in China, demonstrating
that Christianity is now rooted in China.
Today, Chinese Christians demonstrate love of church and love of
country. Spread the news that God is love, urged a pioneering
Chinese Christian leader, Bishop K.H. Ting. His message to
Chinese brothers and sisters was that Christianity moves and
compels people not by its doctrines but by the love made manifest
in Jesus Christ.
Today, the ministries of Chinese churches indeed take root
downward, and bear fruit upward (2 Kings 19:30). Well over 23
million Protestant Christians are associated with the China
Christian Council! Through our gifts for Mission and Service, we
provide support to Chinese Christians as they build up the body of
Christ.
Mighty and tender God, our gifts to M&S help your church
to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you.
