Ancient Near Eastern Sculpture

Seated Statue of Gudea

2150-2100 B.C.
Neo-Sumerian Period
Probably Tello (ancient Girsu), southern
Mesopotamia
Artist is unknown but this piece is part of
a series of diorite statues commissioned
by Gudea
Made out diorite
Diorite is an expensive stone that
proclaims the wealth of the owner and
the importance of the subject
Gudea is depicted in a seated pose of a
ruler before his subjects with his hands
folded in a traditional gesture of greeting
and prayer
The statue gives off a sense of calm and
peace

.Continued From Previous

Page
Historically, this piece was
chosen because it is an
example of how this time
period was pervaded by sense
of pious reserve and serenity
which can be seen with his
folded hands and his upward
gaze.
Personally, the reason why I
chose this work of art is
because even though it is
showing piety and submission,
the statue shows just how
strong the subject is with his
muscular arms.

Ancient Egyptian Architecture

Stepped Pyramid of King
Djoser
2630-2611 B.C.E.
Saqqara, Egypt
Designed by Imhotep
Made with stone
Starts off with a wide
base and decreases in
size as it goes up. This
allowed the structure to
be built taller.
Made with a series of 6
mastabas stacked on top
of each other.

.Continuation From Previous

Page
Historically, this structure was chosen because it marked
the beginning of pyramids. The Stepped Pyramid of King
Djoser was desiged by Imhotep, he placed six mastabas
on top of each other in varying sizes from the largest
and widest at the bottom to the smallest at the top.
Personally, I chose this work of art because it marked
the time where people stopped building on even ground
and started to stack things together to make buildings
and structures more bigger. I think if it were not for
Imhoteps designs, then there would be no pyramids and
practically no preserved mummies.
