ike classic car collectors and NASCAR drivers and fans, pumpers have
high-octane fuel coursing through their veins. Your job might be focused on scouring out septic tanks, grease traps and industrial pits of
all kinds, but your real passion is found on the other end of the suction hose:
your trucks.
How do we know this is true? Pumper readers burn through the pages
of classified truck ads every month to see whats being bought and sold. You
pore over photos of new rigs offered by industry truck builders in glossy fullpage ads to keep up on service truck trends. You spend three days every year
at the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport (WWETT)
Show examining the newest vacuum trucks from stem to stern.
I know youre proud of your own unique service fleet. They are prominently featured on the front page of your websites and Facebook pages. You
often refer to your trucks as rolling billboards for your professional business.
You trick them out, keep them clean and detailed, and prepare them every
morning as if youll drive them in the local Fourth of July parade.
Truck appearance means more to pumpers than it does to some work
truck owners. Why do I say this? I live in Wisconsin, the Dairy State, where
there are way more independent milk haulers than pumping professionals.
And every milk truck looks exactly the same. These dairy haulers dont spend
a lot of time detailing their trucks. They dont give any weight or consideration to additional chrome brightwork or vinyl graphics. To them, a truck is
a truck is a truck. At least it seems that way to me.
TRUCK EVOLUTION
For pumpers, a truck is a lot more than a simple waste receptacle. Its
part of the mission statement for your business. When you order a truck,
you think of it as a blank canvas on which to promote your professionalism and personality, to create a rolling billboard to reach your customers.
You give great importance to paint schemes, to building a reputation for
your business, to how you place tools and components to increase worker
efficiency.
Over the past decade, Ive seen the pumping community take a more
thorough and sophisticated approach to speccing trucks and using their
fleets as an important tool for branding a consumer-oriented business. The
growth of our popular Classy Truck feature is evidence of this trend. For the
past few years, weve seen a spike in submissions of Classy Truck photos,
and, by and large, the look of the trucks is more refined than it was when I
took the role as editor at this magazine.
We want to celebrate the evolution of the Classy Truck and provide
more of the trucking content we know pumper gearheads crave. We want
to do for work truck owners what glossy publications like Motor Trend do

More Classy Trucks for 2016
Over the last few years, weve had more work trucks lining up in the
driveway of the Classy Truck garage. As more pumpers send in their photos, were going to release bonus Classy Trucks in upcoming issues. These
submissions will qualify for our popular Classy Truck of the Year contest,
vying for the opportunity to land on the cover of the magazine. The number
of bonus trucks for 2016 depends on continued submissions from Pumper
readers. Id love to be able to double the Classy Truck corral for next year.
How do you get involved? Its simple. Shoot bumper-to-bumper photos of
your new or refurbished truck (even large-sized smartphone photos will
work) and send them to me along with a description of the truck to editor@
pumper.com. Then Ill call you with more questions as your truck is being
considered.
Walk-around truck videos
If your truck is chosen to run in the magazine, well ask you to grab your
phone and make a walk-around video that we can post at our website, www.

point toward the truck and talk about your favorite features. Slowly make
your way around the rig while describing what went into your decisions in

nvironmental services company TPM Group was founded in

1991 on the business of excavating and removing underground
storage tanks. Today, industrial vacuum services are an important component of a diverse business that prides itself on delivering
service from project concept to completion.
TPM President Eddie Hanks was introduced to the art of equipment operation at age 14.
My older brother CK was an entrepreneur, says Hanks. In
1978, Kentucky was putting in a lot of rural water mains, but installing
service lines was the responsibility of the property owner. CK bought
an old Ditch Witch J-15 trencher, and I learned how to use it in the
field behind my house. I offered an attractive price for my labor and
my brother subcontracted the trenching to me.

regulations pertaining to underground storage tanks in 1988, which required owners to upgrade or replace tanks over the next 10 years.
I became state certified to install, remove and service underground
tanks, then hired a geologist and a hydrologist to handle contaminated soil remediation and groundwater issues, and established TPM Environmental Services in 1991, says Hanks. From that point on I realized that I needed to provide a full range of offerings to my customers, from concept to completion.
Hanks established Hanks Construction of Bowling Green in 1986 and operated it while completing a business degree
at Western Kentucky University. Classes
concluded in 1989, but Hanks couldnt
collect his bachelors without finishing his
internship. In 1991, I bid on the steam tunnel concrete replacement contract
at (the college) and wrote my internship on that, he says.
Hanks recalls talking to his father about ivory tower consultants who
design a project and then bring in technical know-how to perform the actual work.
My dad advised me that I needed to offer more value by becoming the
consultant and also delivering a service, he recalls. That would maximize
the value of my equipment to allow a better return on investment.

If we came off a job at night after picking up a load of latex paint, the
vacuum truck would be of no use until the next day, says Hanks. Solidification is like preparing a Betty Crocker cake mix we look for a material that
can be employed in beneficial reuse. We empty the tank and mix it with a
bulking agent like auto fluff shredded nonmetallic car parts or ground up
wood pallets, which renders the product inert.

On Feb. 12, 2014, at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green,
Kentucky, the floor of the museum and eight Corvettes disappeared in a
sinkhole 40 feet wide and 40 feet deep. Local general contractor Scott, Murphy
& Daniel was retained to recover the most easily accessible cars by crane.
While the first five cars were visible, three were buried and lost, says Eddie
Hanks, president of hydroexcavation service specialist TPM Group. I called
Mike Murphy, the construction manager, and told him that we could uncover the
missing cars with our hydroexcavator. I even demonstrated our hydroexcavation
capability by bringing in my own 1984 Corvette, dumping a pile of dirt on it with
a front-end loader and safely removing it with the hydroexcavator. They said
that they had tried hiring a hydroexcavation contractor and that the machines
wouldnt be effective at 40 feet. I told them we could do it.
TPM crews outfitted their Guzzler with a vertical hard, smooth-walled pipe
secured to the side of the sinkhole to help overcome the static resistance of a
40-foot pull. Crews used hydraulic manlifts to direct the vacuum pipe.
We were able to pull out enough soil to find two of the missing cars so that
a mechanical long stick excavator could dig around them, Hanks says. They
were then lifted to safety by a crane.

The fleet is kept in top shape at TPMs Bowling Green maintenance
shop, which handles anything up to major rebuilds.
Workers receive regular safety training, while vacuum truck operators
may also attend training programs offered by manufacturers.
Leveraging the vacuum fleet, the company has taken on drain cleaning and industrial vacuuming for clients as diverse as hospitals and airports.
TPM also continues to expand its presence in highway cleanup contracts.
One thing our experienced staff has learned is to send the right truck to
the right job, says Hanks. Never send a liquid truck to do an industrial dust
removal job or youre going to go through a lot of hoses and filters or replace a ruined blower. On the other hand, a combo truck with a boiler comes
in handy to spray off road surfaces when youre cleaning chicken gizzards
from the interstate.
Last winter, Hanks even used a Guzzler and some deicing salt to clear a
load of snow from the collapsing roof of a commercial retail building.
We used large-diameter flexible hose and kept replacing it every time
the hose froze up, says Hanks.

Hydroexcavation is set to drive company growth and to expand TPMs
reputation as a do-all service provider.
When a customer calls at 5:30 p.m. on a Friday and tells me that my
company is the only one that can take on a difficult hydroexcavation job,
its not a problem, its a compliment, says Hanks. We like to be known as a
company that can make things happen.

Power plants that are converting from coal-fired power represent a
growth area over the next 10 years. One of TPMs largest contracts was completed last year at the Tennessee Valley Authoritys Paradise Fossil Plant.

Wipes maker Nice-Pak agrees to

stop marketing products as flushable

manufacturer of wet wipes has agreed to stop promoting its product

as flushable and will no longer claim they are safe for sewers and
septic tanks until it can substantiate those claims. The proposed
settlement between the Federal Trade Commission and Nice-Pak Products
Inc. was finalized in June.
Jessica Rich, director of the FTCs Bureau of Consumer Protection,
stated in a news release, The evidence didnt back up Nice-Paks claims
that their wipes were safe to flush. If you claim a product is flushable, it
needs to flush in the real world, without clogging household plumbing or
sewer and septic systems. The companys testing did not reflect real conditions, the agency contended.
The FTC complaint said the company had violated the law by claiming
that the wipes:
Are safe for sewer systems
Are safe for septic systems
Break apart shortly after being flushed
Are safe to flush
The company released a statement saying the products in question
had been discontinued in 2014 and maintained that their claims were fully substantiated. Nice-Pak produced the wipes for private labels marketed
by Costco, CVS and Target.
The company is also named in a class-action lawsuit brought by the
City of Wyoming, Minnesota, against six manufacturers of flushable wipes
that alleges manufacturers knowingly marketed and distributed wipes as
flushable, when in reality the wipes can cause severe problems to wastewater systems.

Rhode Island
A state Senate committee has approved a cesspool bill that was pulled
from a scheduled vote at the end of the legislative session last year. If
passed, the law would require the replacement of all cesspools with approved septic systems or sewer connections when a property is sold or
ownership changes. Waivers would be available for low-income property
owners.
Rhode Island banned installation of new cesspools in 1968, but 25,000
of them are still in use. The cesspool act of 2007 required replacement of
those within 200 feet of tidal waters, public wells and waters used for drinking supply intakes by January 2014.
Pennsylvania
The U.S. District Court for eastern Pennsylvania is reviewing the dismissal of a lawsuit challenging a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
ruling that septic systems in the state do not require EPA review as long as
they comply with state law. Several environmental groups have challenged
the ruling saying the states septic system law violates its anti-degradation
policy and that the EPA should have reviewed and disapproved of the 2014
law. Two construction industry groups have joined the case as interveners.
The National Association of Home Builders and the Pennsylvania Builders
Association have taken the EPAs side in the case, claiming that the court
ruling is correct and that the Clean Water Act does not require an EPA review of state statutes.
North Carolina
Legislation would allow food stands to offer tables and chairs without
having to worry about being classified as a restaurant. North Carolina
state Sen. Jerry Tillman (R-Archdale) introduced the bill after visiting a
country store where senior citizens have to stand as they socialize over
biscuits warmed in a microwave oven. According to the News & Observer
newspaper, state health rules forbid food stands from providing seating to
make sure businesses have adequate septic systems to serve customers.
The Division of Public Health says it does not oppose the measure, which
would apply to permanent businesses but not food trucks.

Wastewater Treatment on a Budget

Off-grid residents in a remote Minnesota region can now save money by using inexpensive
gray- and wastewater onsite system designs By Doug Day
ocated in the remote Arrowhead region of Minnesota between

Lake Superior and Canada Cook County has only 5,000 people.
Most of the forested land is government-owned, so land available for
development is expensive. A growing segment of the population enjoys an
alternative lifestyle, and these people are looking for better ways to handle
their wastewater on a tight budget.
That includes those who live in very small rustic homes without electricity or running water. Some are called yurts, which are becoming popular
with off-the-grid residents. A yurt is a fabric home of 100 to several hundred
square feet built on a wood base with a wood
frame and rafters, lattice walls, and framed
doors and windows. While popular as vacation cabins, they are also used as year-round
homes by some because they are so cheap; a
700-square-foot yurt may cost around $10,000.
Thanks to a board of county commissioners willing to listen and a health officer
with some imagination, the people got what
they wanted. Commissioner Heidi Doo-Kirk,
a self-employed bookkeeper with a background in septic system design, broached the
topic of allowing alternative systems as the
county was rewriting its septic ordinance in

The new ordinance allows privies, seasonal porta-potties, incineration
toilets, seasonal and year-round composting toilets. But Mitchell Everson,
county environmental health officer, also designed systems for low-flow
households that gained the support of the Minnesota Pollution Control
Agency for use outside shoreland areas.
Everson developed two graywater systems for hand-carried water and
pressurized systems, and another to handle toilet waste. The mini M-box
and M-box are designed for primitive dwellings with flows of around 30, 108
and 180 gallons per day. Patent applications for the systems have been filed.
What are some of the design standards for these systems?
Everson: The mini M-box is a 30 gpd graywater gravity system for handcarried water. Most people at our meetings said they use 3 gallons a day or
less. By law, you can hand-carry it back out and distribute it on the ground,
but if you put it into a pipe, you need a treatment system. Most just have a

Heidi, how did your background in septic design help in this project?
Doo-Kirk: When I was elected to our county
commission, the state had asked us to update
our septic ordinance and, with my background,
I volunteered to sit on the committee. We have a
tough time up here. Were pretty much stuck with
mound systems that cost $25,000 to $40,000.
The government owns 92 percent of the land
in Cook County, so property around here is expensive. With land and septic, you have $100,000
invested before you even have a house.

want to build their own homes with graywater
systems. It is legal to just throw it outside, but its
not OK to put it through pipe. A lot of them have
gardens, so one day I asked why we couldnt have
a system for them that works like a mound system and filters the graywater. I drew up a small
box with all the same characteristics of a mound
system and asked if we couldnt use that. Mitch
looked at me a little strange, went into his office
and designed it, and the Minnesota Pollution
Control Agency (PCA) accepted it.
Everson: I had already come up with the M-box
for the pressurized graywater. And then the discussion went to the hand-carried water and the
people who wanted it to go out a pipe. So from
that discussion, I did more designs to show that it
could be done and confirmed that with the PCA.
Were you surprised that the PCA accepted it so
easily?
Doo-Kirk: They were great. They Skyped into
some of our meetings and came to a couple. Now
we have a few other counties contacting us trying to
figure out how they can do it elsewhere in the state.
Everson: When PCA announced that counties

had to update their ordinances, they brought up
the idea of alternative local standards if we wanted to pursue them. This is far better than people
just taking their graywater and surface-applying
it, so why wouldnt they go for it?
How many yurts are there in Cook County?
Doo-Kirk: I know of at least four, but they dont
need a land use permit so we arent sure. We have
a lot of water and people are worried about protecting it. We had about 70 people show up for
the public meetings on the new septic regulations.
Everson: There seems to be a growing community that wants to live that low-impact lifestyle.
There are quite a few who come through the office
and want to know whats available and what alternative systems they can look into.
How many of these systems have been installed?
Everson: The ordinance was approved just last
spring, and we approved one last fall that hasnt
been installed yet. Once one goes in, the word is
going to get around. Once people see and understand that there are alternatives, were going to
see a lot more of this happening. I think it will be
a hit.

ne million new immigrants enter the United States annually, and onethird of all Americans are minorities. People from diverse cultures
present a tremendous opportunity for companies to sell more products and services if businesses are willing to adjust their practices to meet
the unique needs of the fastest-growing consumer group in the country. The
buying power of Hispanics, African-Americans, Asians and Middle Easterners is growing rapidly, and they spend over $2 trillion annually.
Many Americans wrongly believe that multicultural customers only
want to do business with people from their own culture. In most cases, nothing could be further from the truth, as long as they are treated with respect
and patience.
In some cases, minorities deliberately seek out businesses and salespeople from outside their culture. In real estate, for example, some Asian
and Hispanic clients choose agents who are not from their culture because
they fear that if they share personal financial information with one of their
brethren, that information might spread around their community.
Developing a diverse customer base takes more than printing brochures in different languages or hiring bilingual employees. It requires a
long-term commitment and a willingness to adjust business practices to
meet the special circumstances of minorities. American businesses can
bridge this gap and increase sales to this market by educating themselves
on the differences.
PROPER GREETING
One challenge when trying to attract this group is that they dont buy
products and services the same way as Anglo-Americans. A few of the diversity differences that affect retail and service providers include building
rapport, negotiations and contracts.
The first step in building rapport with people, regardless of culture, is
never to assume how they want to be greeted. As Americans, we assume
customers want to be met with a firm handshake. But the most common
greeting in the world is the bow (the handshake can actually be offensive
to many people). Let the customer determine the most comfortable greeting by hesitating before extending your hand to see what they do first. Most
men, regardless of culture, will offer a handshake and may nod as they do so.
Simply do likewise.
After shaking a mans hand, it is crucial that you drop your hand to your
side before turning to his female companion. Many traditional Middle Eastern, Japanese and other women are uncomfortable touching or are even
forbidden to touch a man who is not their husband. Men from the Middle
East often do not introduce the women who accompany them, nor is it expected that you shake hands with their spouses.

Greet customers verbally and give them the opportunity
to offer the type of greeting that is most comfortable for
them. Then simply return the gesture.
Recognize, too, that some cultures are used to hugging and even kissing people on the cheek. Immigrant men from the Middle East often shake
hands with a slight nod or bow and then exchange kisses on both cheeks. If
this happens to you, take it as a sign that they are comfortable with you, and
do likewise. Dont try to turn away or you may get kissed on the mouth!

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL?
Personal space also varies among cultures. In the United States, we usually shake hands and then stand about 2 1/2 feet apart. This is not always
comfortable for people from more formal countries like Japan, where they
bow or shake hands and take a step back. To Americans, that distance seems
like the Grand Canyon, so we step forward. Then the Japanese person will
naturally step back to re-establish a more comfortable distance.
Some cultures prefer a closer distance when communicating. Middle
Easterners and many Hispanics will often hug you and simply stay at that
distance. This is way too close for Americans, so we naturally step back. Then
they will step forward, and so on. This can make communication uneasy. It
also does not start your relationship on a very positive note.
Eye contact is another difference to be aware of. Americans equate
strong, direct eye contact with honesty and respect. Many Asians and Native Americans, however, look down, avoiding direct eye contact as a sign of
respect for you. This can be uncomfortable for people from this country, so
we try to catch their eye. The solution is simple: look down.
Meanwhile, Middle Eastern people and some Hispanics often use
strong eye contact. People from these groups may make Americans somewhat uncomfortable with their intensity. The best advice? Just get used to it.
LEARN TO DICKER
Many new immigrants come from countries where negotiating is a
way of life. In America, were used to paying full price for nearly everything

that are willing to adjust, just a little, to make people from other cultures
more comfortable doing business with them.

ome contractors flinch at the prospect of tackling difficult, highrisk/high-reward projects. Others enthusiastically embrace them.
Canessco Services Inc., an industrial cleaning and multifaceted
wastewater services company in Edmonton, Alberta, falls squarely in the
latter category.
Its not that company officials are foolhardy. Theyre just confident,
which stems from operating a fleet of reliable and powerful equipment
and assembling a group of operators with more than 130 years of collective experience. This can-do attitude, combined with customer-centric
employees, explains how Canessco has thrived for 63 years and why it
has significantly expanded its service offerings during that time.
We do a lot of work that no one else wants to do, says Nathan Gagnier, operations manager at Canessco. The harder the jobs are, the more
interested we are in doing them. And personally, I love a good challenge.
Thats exactly what Gagnier faced when a customer asked Canessco to clean out six 1,600-foot-long runs of 4-inch-diameter conduit that
carry power lines under the North Saskatchewan River to a large water
treatment plant. Plant officials had to install new electrical cables in the
conduits, which first necessitated cleaning debris, such as sand and silt,
that had collected in the lines.

To access the conduit lines, crews had to climb down inside two vaults,
one on each side of the river; one vault was 125 feet deep and another 250
feet deep. The conduit lines end in these vaults, which are like manholes
in sewer lines, where workers can splice cables and do repairs, Gagnier
explains. We used four 600-foot-long sections of hose to clean each conduit line.
It was a doozy, he says of the project. It took us three days to do all six
runs. Safety and communications were huge factors. To get in the vaults,
we had to use confined-space entry procedures. Workers inserted hose all
the way to the other end of each conduit run, then jetted in reverse, pulling
debris toward them. The silt and water then drained into a sump, one on
the bottom of each vault. From there, vacuum trucks sucked up the debris,

During winter in Edmonton, Alberta, its not unusual for temperatures to
dip to 30 degrees below zero. That stops a lot of things from working well,
from pipelines that freeze to hydraulic controls on equipment that barely
function even employees who work outdoors.
But despite the brutal conditions, which can run from late October through
March or April, work rarely stops for employees at Canessco Services Inc., an
industrial cleaning and wastewater services firm.
When its minus 30 degrees, youre just trying to keep water from
becoming a giant ice cube, says Nathan Gagnier, operations manager.
We use water-recirculation systems in our vacuum trucks to keep water
constantly moving. And the trucks are equipped with boilers to provide hot
water for thawing pipelines and hydroexcavating frozen ground.
Dressing for success in such harsh conditions requires wearing insulated
coveralls (good to 40 degrees below zero) made by Helly Hansen and Carhartt,
balaclavas and toques (knit hats), waterproof gloves and insulated, steel-toed
rubber boots from Dunlop. Gagnier says workers typically wear an insulated
liner under their waterproof gloves for extra protection. Some workers prefer
Ski-Doo mitts to gloves.
But those (mitts) can be bulky, so if youre working on something that
requires fingers, sometimes you have to take them off, he says.
Canessco workers take other steps to handle the cold, from taking
breaks as needed inside trucks to constantly scrutinizing trucks operations.
Everyone knows that things take longer in winter the trucks operate
slower because the hydraulics slow down, he says. Instead of using
hydraulic fluid, we use automatic transmission fluid (as hydraulic fluid) yearround on our combo vac trucks because its less viscous.
You also have to pay more attention to your unit, he continues. For
example, if you try to extend a boom when its frozen up, you might break it.
Or if a pump freezes up, it might cost $20,000 to fix it because you cracked
the head.
Whats the toughest cold-weather job Gagnier recalls? Hydroexcavating
atop a hill a couple years ago, with wind chills of 22 to 31 degrees below zero.
We were trying to locate a pipeline on the side of a hill, so there was nothing
to block the wind, he says. We had to excavate a hole 35 feet deep. It was
real cold, but it needed to be done. You just dress really warm and take microbreaks to warm up inside the truck.
In rare instances, sometimes its just too bitterly frigid to work outside,
he adds. If its too cold, we dont send our guys out unless its a real
emergency, he says.
Canessco truck operators also like to test the limits of equipment. If the
trucks can do it, well do it, Gagnier says. Ive told manufacturers what we
can do with their truck, and they say it cant do that. I tell them, Sure it can.
HUMBle BeGiNNiNGS
Canessco was founded in 1952 (the name is an abbreviated mash-up
of Canadian Inductor Sales Service Co.). Gagniers grandfather, Peter Fairbridge, bought the company in 1974, and its been owned by the Fairbridge
family ever since. The current owners are Mark Fairbridge and Michele Gagnier, Nathan Gagniers uncle and mother.
When Fairbridge bought the company, it focused primarily on sewer
cleaning. But services expanded dramatically, especially during the last decade. In addition to sewer and industrial cleaning, the company now tackles
septic and grease-trap cleaning, pipeline inspections and hydroexcavating.

We dont want to get too big, he says. We dont want to employ 50
people and run 20 trucks. Were pretty happy where we are. We seem to do a

Fruitland Manufacturing.
For smaller drain-cleaning jobs, the company owns a RIDGID portable water jetter (3 gpm at 1,800 psi), capable of cleaning 1- to 4-inchdiameter lines. Last year, Canessco also invested in an IBAK mainline
tractor camera made by RapidView LLC. Its capable of inspecting pipes
ranging from 6 to 42 inches in diameter, and uses pipe-assessment and
pipe-coding software made by PipeLogix Inc. The company also owns a
RIDGID SeeSnake pipeline inspection system for televising lines from 2
1/2 to 6 inches in diameter.

In The Round Dewatering drum

designed to speed drying process

ames Penner is asking wastewater professionals to think outside the

box when it comes to dewatering. Penners invention, the horizontal
biosolids dewatering system from In The Round Dewatering, was on
display at the 2015 Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport
(WWETT) Show in February. He believes it is the next evolution to typical
roll-off dewatering boxes.
This unit will speed up the dewatering process and give you a more
uniform, consistent result, says Penner. We think it is a great fit across several industries, including septage and municipal dewatering. We are even
testing it right now on frac and tailings waste from mining areas.
The units stainless steel drum lined with perforated plastic tiles is
mounted on a roll-off frame for easy transport and unloading. Water trays
allow containment of discharge water. An 18,000- to 25,000-gallon batch is
mixed with polymer before being filtered in the rotating drum, driven by a
1/2 hp variable-speed electric motor with a heavy-duty chain and sprocket.
The turning eliminates crusting and wet pockets to produce uniform, consistent results. The dewatered material dumps easily and the drum is selfcleaning.
As the water drains, the unit rotates one complete turn every two
hours, says Penner. Typically you let the unit run overnight and by morning you have a dry material ready for disposal or transport. Then you fill it
back up and do it all over again. Its very energy-efficient, so you just fill it
up and let it go.
The drum is 90 inches wide and 20 feet long, and is constructed of stainless steel with a powder-coated frame and plastic filter tiles. Tie-down straps
are included for easy transport. The unit can typically be filled in 90 minutes to two-and-a-half hours. Following treatment, sewage sludge typically
ranges from 18 to 24 percent of pre-dewatering volume. Septic sludge ranges

for land application always changing, a lot of cities are looking at ways to create more uniform biosolids, says Penner. We talked with a lot of municipal
operators at WWETT that were interested in setting up a demonstration. This
is great for them because it eliminates having to use drying beds, saving time
and space.
Penner looks forward to attending the WWETT Show every year, as he
believes it attracts the perfect audience for the dewatering system.

Central Virginia has a lot of residual soils with high clay content, and
we have witnessed not only mounds of fine sediments in the trenches but
have often seen the louvers sealed up by fine clay sediments from backfill.
As far as Ive seen, the companies have not altered their installation
guidance to address leaching fines in anything but sandy soils. Im dealing
with two failures with reduced footprint systems. Both are about 10 years
old.

he U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is holding its third annual

SepticSmart Week Sept. 21-25. As an industry trade association, the
National Association of Wastewater Technicians asks you to join in
during SepticSmart Week and encourage homeowners and communities to
care for and maintain their septic systems.
Across the country, local environmental groups, health departments
and governments face the challenges posed by improperly maintained and
failing septic systems. The EPA and NAWT, along with your help, seek to assist
these local agencies in promoting homeowner education and awareness.
Statistically, nearly one-quarter of all American households depend on
septic systems to treat their wastewater. Failure to maintain a septic system
can lead to backups and overflows. As we know, this can lead to costly repairs,
well contamination, polluted local waterways and risks to public health
and the environment. The EPA and NAWT seek to inform homeowners on
proper septic system care and maintenance and assist local agencies in the
same mission.
The SepticSmart website (www.epa.gov/septicsmart) features materials
that can assist us with our efforts in providing this information to homeowners
and communities. Additional materials are being updated on an ongoing

emerging technologies in decentralized wastewater treatment.
The conference will be used to convey new research, regulations and
policy, and experience and practices in the decentralized onsite wastewater
industry. Those who attend will be the winners with a great breadth of topics,
vendors and educational tours.

EPA MOU partnership

The EPA Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, is undertaking large
initiatives (details which can be found on the EPA website www.epa.gov).
These initiatives are regarding the Chesapeake Bay data-sharing effort and
a Suffolk County Comprehensive Water Resource Management Plan. Along
with these details, a link associated with the EPA Water Finance Center can

As an EPA MOU partner, NAWT is tracking these efforts for our
membership. If issues arise that could impact pumpers and service
providers, NAWT will inform the membership so that NAWT can provide

Stash Some Cash
Check out the latest advice about piling up a rainy day fund and where you should keep it By Erik Gunn
he Money Manager column last month explored how to best manage

and improve cash flow.
One thing that can take some of the pressure off cash flow is having adequate reserves to call on for unexpected expenses or to tide you over
if revenues take a dip.
In fact, the principle of having a reserve fund applies just as much to
your personal finances as to your business. So you might want to read this
with an eye on both sides of your fiscal life.
A word, by the way, about what we really mean by cash reserves: Sometimes people confuse the concept with petty cash. Thats not just confusing
apples and oranges. Theyre so different that its more like a comparison of
apples with barbecue.
Petty cash is nominal funds used to meet occasional yet immediate
needs, says Jim Herst, CEO of Perceptive Selling Initiative in Highland Park,
Illinois. Many offices have a cash box that personnel can use for small, immediate purchases stamps from the post office maybe, or a pizza lunch on
the last Friday of the month. Those funds need special recordkeeping procedures just to keep track of where its all going.
Reserves are something else entirely. Reserves also thought of as
emergency cash are specific funds held to meet determined risks, says
Herst. How much do you need to salt away in reserves to cover those determined risks? Herst observes that it takes experience to answer that
question.
One approach is to simply set aside a time period in which you could
keep paying bills if your income or revenues suddenly took a dive. And
thats the reasonable starting place whether were talking about your business or your personal finances.
You will need to rank your expenses in order of necessity to your business as well as in order of which needs to be paid off most promptly.
THE HOME FRONT
As always, nothing in this column can substitute for the considered advice of a trusted professional financial adviser. Every personal and business
situation is different, and only a trained and certified professional has the
expertise to guide you specifically in the decisions you need to make.
On the personal side, financial planners generally recommend parking
three to six months worth of cash in a safe and easily accessible account.
Of course, you cant just make that appear out of thin air youll need to
work up to it bit by bit, and exercise discipline so you dont dip into those
resources.
Cash flow and emergency reserves are one of the first topics we cover
for a financial planning talent, says Rob Schultz of NWF Advisory in Encino,
California. Schultz says that the three-to-six-month rule of thumb can vary

considerably based on other factors.

I would typically skew to a lower savings reserve requirement for a
family with two stable incomes, he explains.
And stability is a key point. I deal with a lot of health care professionals,
and we consider them fairly stable in terms of job stability especially those
who work for major institutions and hospitals, Schultz says.
But his Southern California client base also includes professionals in
a very different field: entertainment. Performers TV actors and others
might have a show canceled at any time, he continues. For them, We set
the goal at around one year of expenses to set aside in savings.
Homeowners can consider an undrawn-upon home-equity line of
credit as a partial alternative to a cash reserve fund, he adds but not a replacement.
Equity lines of credit would be an additional layer beyond the first
three months in the bank, Schultz points out. Theyre attractive especially
for clients who want to feel like they have a large cushion but hate earning
nothing in the bank.
There is a caveat, though, with an equity line: Even if you dont draw on
it, under the wrong circumstances it can be here today and gone tomorrow.
In a major economic downturn, banks can rescind or clamp down on the
value of an equity line, like we saw back in 2009 and 2010, Schultz says.
IN BUSINESS
On the business side, Schultz says, The principle would be similar, but
the factors that go into making the decision are completely different.
Key questions, he suggests, would be the variability of cash flow and
how easy or difficult it is to convert assets to cash if you need to the liquidation value of your inventory.
The steadier and more stable your continuing revenue stream is, the
less you have to keep on hand in reserves. On the other hand, if you rely on
a few large contracts and any one or more of them could go to another competitor at any time, youll want to consider putting more aside.
Just as an individual would have access to a home-equity line, a business would likely have a line of credit, and that would also factor into my
decision, he adds.
At the same time, though, you dont want to draw on it too often or too
deeply just as you dont want to run up bills on a personal credit card over
the long term.
While a large inventory that you can sell off quickly can serve as another
form of money in the bank, its not something you want to have to do every
three months or so. Liquidating inventory isnt a last resort, but it should be
considered close to it.
SAFE KEEPING
That leads us to the second big question about reserves where do you
keep them?
Standard advice has always been to keep it in an ordinary, federally insured savings account. Financial experts are revising that advice in this day
when savings interest rates are minuscule to nonexistent.
Schultz says that for the first three months worth of cash, the bank is
convenient, easy and safe. So stick with that.
But the further out on the horizon you go, the more you can consider

possible in making the right selection.
We use very short-duration funds on the lower return end, but also
with less interest rate risk, Schultz says. The default risk is negligible.
EASY ACCESS
In the end, though, the easiest answer to the reserves question is probably the safest: Keep as much as you can, up to perhaps a years worth of
expenses. And keep the funds where you can get at them easily and where
your risk of losing the money is minuscule to nonexistent.
That alone should help you sleep better at night, so in the morning
youre ready to make more money and put more aside as you grow your
business.

Septic service professionals should be strong advocates against the use of drainfield-damaging
microbeads in personal care products By Jim Anderson, Ph.D.
QUESTION: Why care about something like plastic microbeads?
ANSWER: The starting point in any discussion about the life span and
effectiveness of individual sewage treatment systems is making sure effluent
coming out of the septic tank does not exceed about 160 mg/L BOD and 60
mg/L suspended solids. When BOD levels are consistently above 160 mg/L
and certainly over 200 mg/L, it is common to recommend additional pretreatment to reduce the levels before discharge to the soil for final treatment
and dispersal. This keeps biomat development in check and within the longterm acceptance rate parameters for soil. At these levels, it is assumed with
proper maintenance (septic tank cleaned at regular intervals, excess water
avoided, etc.) the system will last indefinitely.
One of the primary purposes of these limits other than initial treatment through anaerobic digestion in the tank is to hold the larger solids in
the tank. This involves allowing time for particles that are heavier than water
to settle, forming the sludge layer in the bottom of the tank and keeping the
floating solids soap scum and grease in the tank for cleaning. Effluent
passed on to the soil treatment area should come from the clear zone in the
tank. Having proper baffles along with regular cleaning ensures that the tank
will provide this function.
To make sure that larger solids are not reaching the soil treatment area,
most states have started requiring installation of an effluent screen. This
screen promotes regular cleaning, and if there is an upset in the tank, the
solids are captured and plug the screen instead of passing through and plugging the soil treatment area. This is all good practice, and it works.
SUSPENDED SOLIDS
However, we need to have another discussion about solids those that
remain suspended and are small enough to move readily through the screen
and into the soil treatment area. If these solids are small pieces of organic
material, they will break down or be consumed in the soil. However, if they
are inert particles such as clay soil particles or plastics or other synthetic materials, they will not break down in the soil environment and will plug the
soil pores, permanently reducing the ability of the soil to accept septic tank
effluent. There is no fix when this happens other than replacement.
When septic service professionals get together, talk often turns to situations where a system is having problems and the homeowner is using certain
cleaning products or bath oils or a variety of other products. The conclusion
is that this is somehow affecting the system, but most of it is anecdotal and
without a lot of research to back it up. Nevertheless, we encourage homeowners to not use excessive amounts of soap or cleaning products.
Enter the microbeads: small plastic pellets used in personal care products such as hand soap, exfoliating scrubs and toothpaste. When these prod-

ucts are used by consumers and are washed down the drains of sinks and
showers, the microbeads end up in wastewater treatment systems. Some
of these beads are heavy and they sink and are contained in the sludge in
the bottom of the tank. Others float, ending up as a suspended solid in the
septic tank.
Interestingly, it is not our industry that has highlighted these beads
as being a problem, but researchers looking at the outflow from municipal
treatment plants where the beads have been discharged to the surface waters and are then consumed by fish, causing potential environmental and
health concerns.
SAY NO TO MICROBEADS
For us, though, these microbeads or microplastics less than 5 mm in
their longest dimension and often smaller, down to 0.335 mm will easily
pass through the effluent screens we have in place and continue on to the
soil treatment area. And they are common in many products that would be
used by a homeowner. These include toothpaste, soap, exfoliating creams
and lotions, and bathroom cleaning products. In my view, this supports
some of the anecdotal discussion about cleaners and soaps causing problems in certain areas. We certainly want to limit the use of these products to
protect the soil treatment part of the system.
This year has seen a number of states, including California, Illinois and
Minnesota, ban the use of products containing microbeads. A number of
other Great Lakes states are also considering bans. The good news is that
these personal care and cleaning product manufacturers have recognized
the problems and are eliminating their use.
As a service provider, you should be supportive of any moves to eliminate these beads from products. A smartphone app is available to scan ingredient lists to determine if these products contain plastics that make up
microbeads. Continuing to have conversations with clients and homeowners about not overusing products will also help prolong the life of that wastewater treatment system in their backyard.

Adapting to new government regulations, coping with disposal issues draws wastewater
professionals together at the Ontario Association of Sewage Industry Services By Doug Day
ormed in October 1991, the Ontario Sewage and Liquid Waste Carriers
Association was originally for pumpers and haulers in the Canadian
province. In 1998, the group expanded its focus to include installers
and the portable sanitation industry, changing its name to OASIS, the Ontario Association of Sewage Industry Services.
As OASIS celebrates its 25th anniversary at its annual conference in October, Chris Aitkin is just starting his second year as the groups president,
carrying on the legacy of his familys business, Rankins Septic Tank Pumping and Environment Services. His father, Jim, became involved in the group
shortly after its inception and also served as president of the organization, which now has about 250
member companies. Chris joined the board in 2008
when his father became ill.
How much has changed over the 25 years of

OASIS?
Aitkin: Everything has changed, from equipment
and insurance to how disposal is done and how the
government runs things. We have built relationships
with the ministries, providing advice and raising concerns where we see necessary. Were very excited
about our 25th year; its really a milestone for us.

You are in the midst of another big change; tell

us about OASIS and the Ontario Onsite Wastewater Association.
Aitkin: Our most recent important undertaking is the relationship we are building with OOWA. We are combining our
conferences starting in 2017 to provide the entire industry with a one-stop
shop once a year. Its been coming for a long time. Our members wont have
to choose which conference to attend, many attend both, but they can support both organizations in a joint conference and trade show. Its going to be
more cost-effective for the members and for OASIS and OOWA.
We have formed joint committees so everything is going to be much
neater, tighter and more organized because were working with each other
to reach common goals. When you have two associations that have the same
interests, there are certain points where it just makes more sense to collaborate. When we talk to the government about something, theyll ask us what
OOWA thinks or vice versa. Now its going to be, We both think this. Sitting
at the table together brings that much more volume to our voice.
The working relationship will benefit both groups as we can stand united and carry forth the message far stronger than the individual organization
can alone. This industry is still mostly small family businesses in some of the
most remote communities in Ontario, so there is strength in numbers.

How close is this to being a merger?

Aitkin: The word merger has not entered anybodys vocabulary. We are
strictly working on collaboration between two organizations that have the
same goals that can achieve success better than one big organization.
Our memberships are different. Some overlap, but the majority of OASIS members are pumpers, haulers, the portable restroom people and some
installers. The mainstay of OOWA is designers, installers, manufacturers, engineers, regulators and researchers. We have things we concentrate on like
portable restrooms that have no relevance to them.
What are the biggest issues for OASIS right now?
Aitkin: We are working with the Ministry of Labour to define best practices for workers and suppliers around the rules and regulations for portable
restrooms. We need a level playing field, for everything to be policed the
same way with the same expectations. We want everybody to have
a better understanding of what is

Looking back at 25 years,
what are some of the key accomplishments of OASIS?
Aitkin: Weve done a lot of work with the government. When the province downloaded responsibility for septic systems to the municipalities in
the mid 90s, we worked diligently to have our members certified under the
new regulations and helped the process along. Portable restrooms in the
construction industry have been at the forefront for many years. We were
involved when the rules were revamped about 20 years ago.
The biggest benefit I see is the networking. If somebody needs help, I can
pick up the phone and call someone in another part of the province. One of
our directors sons was killed in an accident, a members truck caught fire,
another members truck caved in, somebody broke their leg. There isnt a time

that somebody didnt pick up the phone and ask what they could do to help.
The day after my father died in 2012, all the guys from my area and at
least five from across the province contacted me and asked what I needed to
get through the next couple of days. There are many instances of our members sending jobs to each other and working together in times of need. Thats
the kind of people we have as members and the camaraderie we have.
One of the most important things to OASIS is family. You can watch
the generations change as the younger ones move up and start bearing the
brunt of the workload, the fathers teaching their sons and daughters, and
then the children teaching their parents new technologies and better ways.
What do you see as the big issues in the future?
Aitkin: With the provincial government, its always been the goal to limit land application. Doing away with it is not a reality. Wed all love to dispose
at a sewage treatment plant, but we dont all have access to one. There are
some areas of the province where plants dont have the ability to take on that
much sewage from septic tanks, so land application is the only alternative.
Some people use lagoons; some have put in their own treatment facilities
with reed beds or other technology.
We work with government to get receiving stations put in when they
build new wastewater treatment plants. Its just a matter of finding that happy medium and what is feasible. Its the same as in the United States. Some
areas are very good at disposal and they provide you a cost-effective way
to dispose of the sewage. Some have outlawed land application, but if they
provide me an economical way to dispose of it, I dont mind.
Disposal is always going to be an issue, always has been. Its why this organization was brought to life 25 years ago and we keep plugging along and
succeeding in keeping things moving and looking for better ways to do it.

Problem: When the City of Troy, Alabama, implemented advanced metering infrastructure, city leaders researched ways to clean the water meter boxes of its several
thousand customers to prep them for replacement. We have 7,000 to 8,000 meter
boxes, and we have not had a complete meter change-out in over 20 years, so the
majority of boxes are full of dirt and other debris, says Mike Davis, assistant general
manager of Troy Utilities.
Solution: The company

about a Texas municipality doing the same
work with a Vermeer

excavator that included a sewer jetter. A team from Troy went to Texas. When they
demonstrated it, we knew it was exactly what we wanted, Davis says. We thought
wed found a solution that would reduce the time spent on the job by half. His
department purchased a Vermeer VX80 vacuum excavator with sewer jetter. The
machine will suck up dirt and other debris inside residential water meter boxes and
the larger commercial vaults, and also clean them with the sewer jetter.
Result: The meter work should start by the end of this year and be finished a year or
two later. Already, though, the city is using its VX80 to clean blocked storm drains. It
will also be used to locate utilities. I dont think weve reached the full potential of this

solar-powered interior and exterior lighting. Mounted on a DOT trailer, the PolyJohn
restroom, available in an assortment of colors, has a 50-gallon waste tank with
washout port and 30-gallon freshwater aluminum tank.
Moving a portable restroom for a rental company is time-consuming and
certainly not cost-effective for people who are on the go all the time, like tree trimming and roofing companies, says Jay Poust, inventor of the Tow-Let portable
restroom trailer. Theyre on a roof one day and the next day theyre on a different
roof. They need a portable restroom, but theyre not going to pay a company $150
or whatever to have it there for a day. I thought if they had a unit that they could
pull behind a truck, wouldnt that be a great idea?
Each flush uses about 2 pints of water (about 100 flushes per fill). The lockable
rear-mounted storage box includes pump, charging system, hose and room for
supplies. The waste tank has a sloping bottom with side-mounted dump valve.
The biggest advantage to the consumer is they dont have to look at human
waste, Poust says. Its just like a toilet in their house. Its a functional restroom.
The trailer is 150 inches long, 90 inches wide, 104.6 inches to the top of the
restroom and about 9 inches above the ground. Trailers have a 2-inch ball hitch for
towing and feature rear stabilizers, steps, handrails and a front jack.
Other models include the Twin with two flushing units on one trailer for larger
work crews and special events (260 gallons waste, 210 gallons freshwater) and
a Standard non-flushing restroom. The Low-Ryder trailer, available with or without
restroom, can be built to specific needs and customized in company colors. The
trailer can accommodate any brand of restroom.
Mobility is what makes this product the innovation that it is, says owner Ivan
Craig. You can pick them up and go from site to site quickly and easily without
having to worry about a mess. You just pull up to an RV dumpsite and empty the
