Apply proportional reasoning

Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to:
Use their knowledge of fractions so far to identify the relationships between a variety of
fractions
Identify equivalent fractions relating to , , & 1/8
Understand the fractions equivalent to a whole and labelling parts of fractions
Recognise equivalent fractions specifically to a half and identify the relationship
between the numerator and denominator
Resources
The following resources will be required:
The fraction cake resource
The flipbook resource and
Student Prior Knowledge
Prior to this lesson, students already be able to:
Identify the numerator and denominator
Recognise fractions as equal parts of a whole
Identify the importance of equal parts

Lesson Procedure
Motivation and Lesson Introduction
Gain students attention
Remind students of last lesson and ask what they learnt
previously.
Recap numerator, denominator, the importance of equal
parts
Ask students to open the books to their dividing page. Ask
them how many counters out of the 12 are in one of the
boxes in each example. Ask them in relation to halves,
quarters, etc. (Showing them that they are equivalent)
Explain how they are equivalent.
Explain that they will be looking closer at the equivalent
fractions or equal fractions.
Ask students to get out their math books and rule a line
horizontally across the middle of the page and then
vertically down the middle to the other horizontal line.
Explain that they will be using the fraction cake to see what
fractions are equal to a half.
Show students the half in the fraction cake.
Ask for volunteers to come up and put certain fraction parts
on top of the half to see if it is equal to half.
As you go write on the board in two columns-one for the
fractions that are equivalent to half and one for those that
arent
Explain how they are and arent equivalent and continue to
ask for volunteers to add different pieces onto the half.
Showing other students as you go.
When finished explain that they will be creating a flipbook
that shows the fractions equivalent or equal to half.
Procedure and Lesson Content
Using the flipbook resource, show students the model
Explain that they have to cut out along the dotted lines
Guide them in how to make the flip-book
Once they have made the flip-book explain how they fill in
each of the fraction counting each part.
Explain how all the pieces together are equal to a whole
Ask students to write the fractions in words- guide them for
each page of their flip-book
Ask them to get out a coloured pencil
Then ask the students to colour in one half on the line that
has two parts
Then ask them how many quarters make half and guide
them through each of the different fractions until they have
coloured in half of each line
Ask them to stick this in their books and beside or
underneath write some examples of equivalent fractions.
Eg. = 2/4

Differentiation

Put Hearing Aid device on
for student with Low
hearing.

As a focus strategy ask for
whole body listening.

What for hands on heads to
move on

Ensure all students are
focussed and on task.

Guide students in the
creation of the table.

Use hands on heads to go on
to the next part

Guide them if they do not
understand

Ask students if they have
any questions

Support students who are
likely to be unfocussed and
ensure each student is on
task.

Lesson Conclusion
Ask students to clean up the rubbish and to put their
books away, ready for lunch/next lesson.

Use magic paper strategy
to clean up.

Assessment

Assessment For Learning

Take notes on student engagement and lesson process
Mark student work and take note of confusions and the overall results of the activity

Evaluation

Can students:
! Use their knowledge of fractions so far to identify the relationships between a variety
of fractions
! Identify equivalent fractions relating to , , & 1/8
! Understand the fractions equivalent to a whole and labelling parts of fractions
! Recognise equivalent fractions specifically to a half and identify the relationship
between the numerator and denominator
