DC AND SINGLE PHASE COMMUTATOR MOTORS
EACH STUDENT ATTENDING THIS LAB SHOULD READ CAREFULLY THE
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS BELOW, SIGN THIS COVER SHEET AND RETURN
IT TO YOUR LAB TUTOR:
« STUDENTS ARE WARNED OF POSSIBLE ELECTRIC SHOCK RISK
AND FIRE RISK IN THE LAB AREA;
« NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE LAB;
« AS THE BENCH POWER SUPPLIES HAVE 150 V AC AVAILABLE,
THE TESTS COVERED IN THIS LAB CAN BE LETHAL IF A
MISTAKE IS MADE;
« FIND OUT THE LOCATION OF YOUR NEAREST EMERGENCY
STOP BUTTON BEFORE STARTING;
* DO NOT TURN ON THE SUPPLY UNTIL YOU HAVE DRAWN THE
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM AND YOUR CONNECTIONS HAVE BEEN
CHECKED BY YOUR TUTOR;
* DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT ANY LEADS WHILE THE
SUPPLY IS ON;
* ALWAYS SET THE VARIABLE VOLTAGE TO ZERO BEFORE
TURNING ON THE SUPPLY;
* RETURN THE VOLTAGE TO ZERO BEFORE SWITCHING OFF,
UNLESS THERE IS AN EMERGENCY;
« REMEMBER TO DIAL 6 FOR EMERGENCY;
« REMEMBER TO DIAL 0000 FOR AMBULANCE.
Ihave read these precautions and shall carry them out.

L Aim
1, To measure the DC motor parameters including the armature and shunt and series field
circuit resistances, and emf coefficient as a function of separate field excitation current,
2. To measure the characteristics of a DC motor with DC and AC series excitations and DC
separate excitation under no-load and load conditions, respectively, and
3. To compare the experimental results with the theoretical calculation of steady state
performance obtained by using the measured DC motor parameters.
IL. Apparatus
1. Lyb-o-tee bench with DC and three-phase AC power supplies,
2. 4-pole DC machine,
3. 3-phase 4-pole synchronous machine with stator, salient rotor, slip-rings and AC brushgear,
4. Torque measuring ring device,
Note: The effective radius of the torque ring is 150 mm. The force is indicated on the dial
gauge which is calibrated in ponds or in ponds and centi-Newtons. | pond = | grm. Wet =
9.810" Newtons.
5. 3:phase resistor set (0 - 8 Q/phase),
6. AC/DC converters or rectifiers, and
7. Metering equipment of the test bench.
TIL. Preliminary Work
1. Sketch the wiring
rams, for no-load tests of DC and AC series motors (refer to Sections
IV.1(A) and (B)) and a separately excited DC motor (refer to Section 1V.1(C)), load test of
the separately exci
DC motor (refer to Section IV.2), and DC resistance measurements of
the shunt and series field windings (4 coils in series) and the armature circuit, respectively
(refer to Section IV.3 below).
2. Derive the methods for calculating the DC motor parameters, such as the shunt and series
field winding resistances, armature circuit resistance, and emf coefficient versus the
tion current, from the experimental test results.

3. Derive the DC motor model for performance calculation with the parameters to be measured
in this experiment.
4. Consider the DC motor performances to be deduced from experimental testing and how to
compare them with the theoretical calculations.Prelimimany Werk
