Aims 1, ‘To measure the open and short circuit characteristics, 2, To calculate the synchronous reactance and core loss from the charact 3. To measure the voltage and power with leading and unity power factor loads, and 4, To calculate the voltage regulation and efficiency. II. Apparatus 1. Lyb-o-tec bench with DC and three-phase AC power supplies, 2. 4-pole DC machine set as prime mover, 3. 3-phase 4-pole stator and 4-pole salient rotor with slip-rings and brush gear for synchronous machine, 4. Metering equipment of the test bench, and 5. Rectifier and loads supplied by the instructor. IIL. Preliminary Work Study the methods for the open and short circuit tests from the textbook and lecture notes; Sketch a wiring diagram for the tests; 3. Drafta test procedures; and 4. Sketch the anticipated regulation characteristics (terminal voltage against load current), IV. Experimental Work IV.1 Test Setup Set up the test rig and connect the test circuit by the following steps: indings in star; 1. Assemble the synchronous machine and connect the stator 2. separately exci 3. Mount the DC motor on top of the synchronous machine and couple them with hose couplin 1C motor by connecting 4 shunt field coils in series; 4. Connect an ammeter in series with the shunt field winding of DC motor, and supply this circuit separately with a rectifier connected to the single phase AC supply on the bench; 5. Energize the armature circuit with the DC supply on the bench; and 6. Supply the field winding of synchronous machine with a rectifier connected between any two phases of the 3-phase AC power supply on the bench. 1V.2 Determination of Synchronous Reactance_ A. Open Circuit Test Set the field current of the DC motor to 2 A. and maintain the speed at 1500 rev/min by adjusting the armature circuit voltage. Increase the excitation current of synchronous machine rotor field winding in convenient 5 or 6 steps up to 2.5 A, and record the stator open circuit terminal voltage yersus the rotor excitation current in 3
