Read the chapter 5 times.


Read the chapter in more than one translation
Read it quietly out loud without stopping.
Write out any questions you have.

A. Heading- a short but descriptive chapter heading.


B. Outline- the major points.
C. People- the major individuals.
D. Verse- most significant or important verse.
E. Key Words- Make a list.
F. Challenges- List any difficulties with the passage or what you
dont understand or are there areas of your life that need
changing?
G. Cross References Follow the steps.

Compare with cross references within the same Testament (Old or New)

A. Pure Cross Reference Says almost exactly the same thing as your verse.
B. Illustrative Cross Reference Illustrates what your verse says.
C. Contrasting Cross Reference Says the opposite of what your verse says.

H. Christ Revealed- Find out what you can discover of the nature,
ministry, or person of Christ from this chapter.
I. Central Lesson(s) - List the major lessons taught.
J. Conclusion
1. How do these insights apply to me personally?
2. What am I going to do about them?

THE DEVOTIONAL METHOD


Step 1 - Pray for understanding and guidance as you
apply the passage into your life.
Step 2 - Meditate on the verse(s) you have chosen for
your study
Step 3 - Write out the application you will make from
the passage into your life.
Step 4 - Memorize a verse from the passage that
summarizes what you have learned.
Step 5 - Assess your application in the weeks that
follow for success or failure.

THE VERSE BY VERSE METHOD


Step 1 - Write out each ver se of the passage in your own words, striving for
accuracy and not referring to other paraphrases except by way of example.
You are attempting to put the passage into your own words, not into the
words of another per son.
Step 2 - List any questions you have on any ver se in your study, note any
answers you are able to find, and record any obser vations you have made
on that ver se. Do this for each ver se in the study. It may be helpful for you
to indicate questions, answer s, and obser vations with the letters Q, A, or O
so that each will be easier to find upon returning to the study at other
times.
Step 3 - Find some cross references for each verse, tr ying for at least one
for each ver se, and indicate if the reference is for a specific word, phrase,
or concept within that ver se.
Step 4 - For each verse note any insights you have found in your study.
Step 5 - Write a brief per sonal application for each ver se or, failing that,
make note of some devotional thought to which you may return in a
Devotional Bible study and build upon it.

Encounter Group Bible Study


Step 1: Your own translation: write out their own translation
of the passage as you would say it, or imagine they are
writing a letter, or email, or text to a friend. Make it clear and
keep it simple. (HINT: Try to put into your own words each of
the key words and phrases before you write out your
translation).
Step 2: Ask yourself? What does this passage say to me?
What does it say about my relationship with God and with
others? What would it mean to me, if I took this seriously?
Step 3: Feedback Ever y person is given the oppor tunity to
read their translation and share their thoughts on the
questions. You should do more listening than speaking.
Step 4: Questions Encourage a time of more general
discussion on the passage, beginning with any common points
raised by others in the group. Close with a time of prayer
asking God to help us apply what we've learned to our lives.
