Required Textbook: Learn to Listen Listen to Learn 1 (3rd Ed.) by Roni S. Lebauer
Course Description: This course is designed for students to be able to comprehend and analyze
extensive discourse; to take notes during academic lectures; and to demonstrate analytical
listening skills such as interpreting a speakers purpose, point of view, tone, or use of figurative
language.
Goals:
To help students build their academic listening and proficiency in a variety of academic
fields in English,
To assist them in developing or improving their English-lecture note taking skills, and
To enhance their ability to read and discuss information and issues related to topics
contained in lectures.
Objectives:
Identify main or key ideas and important details from a university or guest lecture.
Paraphrase/summarize both orally or in writing, passages from their lecture notes.
Comprehend a university lecture or presentation and ask pertinent questions of the
instructor or speaker.
Improve of students ability to listen and take notes from audio, video, or live
presentations.
Practice clarification and discussion skills based on the presentations and lectures.

Discussion Leading: Students will each be responsible for leading the online discussion (via
KLMS) for one week. You will post a video of your own choosing onto the weekly forum, create
several discussion questions for your peers to answer, and facilitate the discussion. The following
is an example of the deadline
Email the professor your video and discussion questions for approval Thursday
Post the video and questions on KLMS by Friday
All students (except DLs) will watch the video and respond to the post by next Monday
DLs will lead the online discussion when students have questions or difficulty with the
assignment, encourage more comments and feedback, etc.
Video Guidelines: You must choose a lecture that is 5~15 minutes long. You may select a longer
lecture and instruct your peers to watch only a certain part of the video. There are no restrictions
on the topic; however, you will need approval from the professor before posting it.

Online Discussions: The discussion leaders (DLs) will post their weeks video assignment
online in which students will be required to:
- First, submit feedback on the subject. You will need to answer the questions and also
provide your own thoughts, ideas, comments, and possibly even add your own questions (at least
150 words)
- Second, comment on at least (3) three other students posts (at least 50 words each)

Attendance Policy: 5 unexcused absences may result in automatic failure of the course. Students
must provide documentation in order for absences to be excused. Students will be marked tardy/
late after the first 10 minutes of class. Please be on time to class!
Cell Phone Policy: Students are NOT allowed to use their cell phones during class for any
reason. Please keep cell phones in your bag to prevent distractions.
Academic Integrity: Students who intentionally submit work that is clearly not their own,
fabricate data or other information, or engage in cheating will be subject to severe penalties. As
part of the KAIST community, please do not violate the principles of academic and professional
integrity that are important to this university.

Late Assignments: All assignments have to be completed on time. Late assignments will be
marked down as a zero. If you are seriously ill or have a family emergency, you need to notify
me via email BEFORE the assignment is due.
Grace Period: For each graded assignment/exam, you will be given a 2-week grace period
during which you will be allowed to dispute the grade received. After the 2 weeks have passed,
your grade will not be changed in the future nor can you request for a grade change.
