THE PRINTING ART OF DIMITRIJE LJUBAVI AND THE ISSUES

OF THE APOSTLES (1547) IN LIGHT OF THE COPIES KEPT
AT THE HILANDAR LIBRARY: A CONTRIBUTION

The Library of the Hilandar Monastery houses four copies of the Apostles dating
from 1547 (Nos. 17, 18, 19, 20) published by Dimitrije Ljubavi, the grandson of
Boidar Goradanin, who founded the printing house at Gorade. These have been
known in academic circles for a long time, as they have been described and cataloged first in the book Rukopisy a starotisky Chilandarske by Sava the Hilandarian
and then in the Catalog of Cyrillic Manuscripts of the Hilandar Monastery, featuring
catalog descriptions by Dejan Medakovi. What is confusing, however, is that the
archeographic descriptions in these two catalogs are inconsistent and incongruous
with each other.
A comparative typographical and morphological analysis of the Hilandar copies
of the Apostles has confirmed what scholars of historiography had already known:
there were in fact two editions of Dimitrije Ljubavis Apostles. This is evidenced by
the inscriptions in the colophons and the headpieces with superscriptions and the
coats of arms of Wallachia and Moldavia, stating that one of the editions had been
printed for the Hungarian-Wallachian ruler Mircea, and the other for the Moldavian prince Ilia. In addition, it has been established that the only differences are to
be found in the colophon contents and structure and some elements of the graphic
decorations, printed in the xylographic technique. The remaining parts of the book
blocks of both issues were printed in the same type, which is also suggested by the
same date in the preface of both issues.
