Bean Germination Lab

This is the format for how to write your bean germination lab report. This
should be on consecutive pages of your Lab Notebook. Write the headings
that are highlighted in yellow and then fill in the rest based on YOUR OWN
DATA! The examples shown (not highlighted) are specific to Ms. Baynes
experiment. Your data will be different and should be specific to what you
saw happen.

1. Question: Write a question about bean seeds that can

be answered by experimentation.

2. Research: Write what you already know about bean

seeds. Use complete sentences.

3. Variables: Identify your variables here

a. Independent Variable:
b. Dependent Variable:

4. Hypothesis: Write it in the correct format below.

If ____(Insert your IV here)______, then ___(Insert your DV here)____ because
____________(give a specific reason to justify your prediction)______________.

5. Materials and Procedures:

Control Group:
Materials:
1 plastic bag
3 beans
1 paper towel
1 Sharpie
10mL of tap water
Graduated cylinder

Procedure:
1. Open the plastic bag and label
it Control with your names.
2. Fold up the paper towel.
3. Place the paper towel in the
bag with 3 black beans on top.
4. Measure 10mL of water and
add to the bag.
5. Seal up the bag.
6. Place it on the appropriate tray
on the back counter.

Experimental Group:
Materials:

List out your materials used for your experimental bag set-up. This will
be almost exactly the same as the Control Group Materials EXCEPT for
the addition of the independent variable.

Procedure:

Then write out your step-by-step procedure. This will also be almost
exactly the same as the Control Group Procedure EXCEPT will contain
the step where you add the independent variable.

6. Qualitative Data: This is where you draw out your data

table and write down all your observations for both the
Control Group and the Experimental Group for the seven
days of the experiment.

7. Data Analysis: (where you write WHAT happened)

Experimental Group:
The experiment showed that the bean grown in a 50% vinegar
solution did not grow. The bean became spongy and enlarged over the
seven days. It also dyed the paper towel purple.
Control Group:
The beans grown in 10 mL of water showed an overall root growth of
about 8 cm over the seven days. There were also two leaves that had
begun to grow.

8. Conclusion:
My hypothesis is supported by the data because there was no bean
growth in the experimental group (grown in vinegar). Vinegar did not
cause the black beans to sprout any faster than water.

9. Discussion: (write in WHY it happened in; paragraph

form, use complete sentences)
In this experiment we found (this is where you write down WHY
your observations probably occurred; use inferences)
I learned (this is where you write about at least one thing you
learned in this experiment)
I could improve this experiment by (come up with at least ONE thing
you could do differently to improve the experiment, make the results more
accurate, keep constants more constant, etc)
