Chapter 1
______________________________
Introduction
The Daily 5 was designed to teach
students how to be independent and
how to build their stamina. With
these skills students become actively
engaged readers and writers. When
students are actively engaged,
teachers can work with students in
small groups or individually. Within
the process of the Daily 5, students
spend extended periods of time
reading and writing while receiving
instruction on building stamina and
independence. It teaches students to
be accountable for their actions,
working on skills and strategies, and
meeting with the teacher for
individual instruction. Students also
have the choices of their reading and
writing.

By allowing students to have a
choice, we are putting them in
charge of their learning. It pushes
them to become more engaged and
motivated.
COMMUNITY
Get to know each other. The sooner
the better. By creating a classroom
community, students will learn to
hold others accountable for
behavior, learning, and kindness.
ACCOUNTABILITY
Teaching students to be
accountable for finding their own
workplaces and keeping their
voices low is very important. If
students are accountable for their
own actions, meaning reading and
writing will take place..
BRAIN RESEARCH
The importance of brain
compatible learning time must be
understood by the teacher. The
average age of our students is the
number of minutes they can pay
attention during direct instruction.
