The Show Me - Spinning Artisan Yarn workshop with Peggy Doney was about learning to
control our wheels and spin thin yarn, thick
yarn, and slubby yarn on purpose (not just
accidentally!). We learned a lot about the
different ways a yarns elements can interact
and how to spin multi-colored braids without
turning the pretty colors to mud. We practiced
a variety of plying techniques including Navajo
plying, Spiral, and Fractal. Among the many
techniques that we attempted to master were
Beehives, Boucles and Crpes
(including Chain Plied Crepe, Bubble
Crepe, and Slubble Crepe). We also had lots of
time to explore how to create beautiful art
batts using blending boards and drum carders
with samples from the fabulous piles of fiber
that Peggy brought with her. Wonderful meals
were provided by Dorothy and Linda and
everyone went home with their tummies and
heads full of wonderful things!

A day at the fair.
The difference in the ways that people are fascinated by spinning is truly amazing.
Throughout the day we saw all sorts of people that wanted to know about all different
aspects of spinning. We had several types of fiber to touch and feel, several types of yarn
(our sample pieces from our spinning retreat weekend), and one piece that was knitted
from my first yarn spun.
One group that came by I felt might be a home school group, so I spent some time
explaining where different animal fibers came from. Although I could not seem to
remember the difference between a llama and an alpaca! And we referred the children to
the small animal zoo we saw when we came onto the fairgrounds.
We visited extensively with a Master Spinner that came by and learned a lot about that
program. She gave me a great idea on wearing the scarf/shawl that I had knit. EXCITING!
And Suzan was so great at going over the workings of the wheel with everyone. So many
men wanted to stop and learn to figure out how the wheels worked. I believe that she may
have gotten a few that wanted to go home and start making their own that day!!
It was a wonderful day of learning and sharing. I look forward to next year.
