1) This chapter is named Figures in the Distance as it relates to Annies obsession with death, when she sees the figures of the dead that have come back from a distance. 2) Annie John and her friends are scared of death due to her belief that the dead come back to haunt the living. This is a fear that is common in many cultures throughout the world, Scandinavian culture or Tibetan culture for example. 3) After Naldas death, Annie begins to look at her mothers hands differently as her mother is the one who cleaned her body and prepared it for the funeral. 4) Z 5) Annie believes that it is shameful for Sonia that her mother has died as, in her mind, growing up with parents is essential for any person, and now that Sonia has lost her mother, she is changed and does not fill the social norm. 6) Annie begins to go to funerals as her fear of death quickly turns into a morbid curiosity of death.
