Name: ___Myriam Karina Bustillo Rubio____

________
Book: The Devil We Know: Dealing with the New Iranian Superpower
- by Robert Baer
Chapters: __11. Memories that dont face: What Iran Really Wants____
Locate 3 passages of the story that your group should reread, discuss, and think about.
Passages should be important things for everyone to notice, remember, or think
about.
Choose a variety of passages, not all the same type--here are suggestions:

surprising/startling
confusing (something you wonder if other people understood)
descriptive writing: figurative language, strong verbs, etc. (identify literary devices) important
(maybe a clue? foreshadowing?)
controversial
event (elicits different opinions from group members)

During Your Group Meeting, Do the Following:

Make sure everyone opens to the right page and help them find where the passage begins.
Either read it aloud yourself, have everyone read it silently, or ask someone to read it
Tell your reasons for selecting each passage; ask for comments. Do they agree with your choices?

Page _235______ Paragraph(s) _2___ The first 3 words of the paragraph are: _Iranians see Americans_
This is interesting (or puzzling) because: Comparing this to Mexico, could we also be considered as people
without a history? Or as people with no sense of history? As far as I know from living almost all of my life
in Mexico, people know the basic layout of history (at least most do), but in a very general manner. Only a
few know why historic events happened and how one event led to another subsequently. In history we can
find and reflect on our mistakes in order to avoid repeating them, maybe what we lack is analyzing our
history more.
An interpretation that can be made from ANOTHER PASSAGE, found on Page ____238_____, Paragraph
__1 and 3___ is interesting (or puzzling) because: The first paragraph explains the main pillar or the
Iranians actions. It shows the passion they have towards justice, although this passion can be too much,
and as a result can cost countless of lives as we are seeing nowadays.
The second paragraph is a quote from the Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who gives an astounding
speech at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., in which she speaks on behalf of the United
States and gives a formal apology towards Iran. I consider this to be an important quote because it is one (if
not the first) of the few times we have seen America give an unprecedented apology to another country,
setting aside its ego, and admitting their mistakes.
In today's reading, a CONNECTION to my personal experience and/or my knowledge appears on Page
_____237____, Paragraph _2_____ and its interesting because: I am a Catholic, and the paragraph speaks
of Christianity beliefs, of how we set aside the good and the evil in the form of Satan, but we never
compare them on the same level. We know that God is always above Satan, they were not created as equal

entities, but as one almighty entity, and the other (Satan) born into the light and then transformed by sin and
temptation.
My comment or question about this story is:
Why indeed should Iran be put under an International Atomic Energy Agency nuclear inspection regime
and not Israel? And in a part of the book it mentions that the United States would need more than a simple
apology to gain Irans forgiveness. What should the United States do in order to gain forgiveness?
