On behalf of AO Craniomaxillofacial and your local and international faculty,

I would like to welcome you to this AOCMF educational event.

AOCMF is a unique worldwide multi-specialty community that includes Oral


and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Plastic Surgeons, Otolaryngologists, Maxillofacial
Surgeons, Oculoplastic Surgeons, Neurosurgeons, General Surgeons, and
Head and Neck Surgeons involved in craniomaxillofacial trauma, oncologic
surgery, reconstruction and congenital surgery.

Our organization creates a forum for specialists from all over the world
who have common interests and enthusiasm in this field. It is our goal to
encourage and inspire residents, fellows, and experienced practitioners to
pursue fulfilling careers in our field.

Education has always been a major pillar in AOCMF. Currently, more


than 4000 surgeons participate in over 90 AOCMF educational events
worldwide per year. AOCMF Education is committed to remaining in the
forefront of education and new developments as we strive to improve your
educational experience.

We hope that your experience with us over the next few days will result
in the acquisition of new knowledge, skills and understanding, which will
translate into an improvement in the care that you are able to give your
patients.

The multispecialty organization—AOCMF Asia Pacific—includes 13 countries in the region. It is steadfast in its
commitment to serve as the voice and resource for surgeons in the field of CMF reconstruction and trauma.

Numerous courses, seminars, workshops and symposia on basic and advanced CMF principles have been
organized and conducted by the organization—educating surgeons, benefiting patients, and improving the qual-
ity of CMF healthcare. Therefore, it is with great pride and pleasure, that I warmly welcome you to another such
educational activity organized by the AOCMF Asia Pacific.

On behalf of our organization, I thank all international, regional and local faculty members, and staff for their
time and expertise put in to pave the way to the realization of this event. My utmost gratitude, likewise, goes to
the industry providers and healthcare institutions for their logistical support and cooperation. I would also like
to take this opportunity to congratulate the organizing committee for coming up with a relevant and state-of-

Goal of the course


The AO Craniomaxillofacial Principles Course will teach the theoretical basis and practical principles of the operative

treatment of craniomaxillofacial fractures and their complications, considering state-of-the-art craniomaxillofacial

osteosynthesis in traumatology and reconstructive surgery.

Target participants
All those who deal with musculoskeletal head and neck disorders concerning trauma, reconstruction as well as

congenital and acquired deformities of the craniofacial skeleton.

Course objectives
After the course, the participants should:

1. Be familiar with the history and structure of the AO.

2. Understand the biology of bone healing and how it is affected by fracture treatment.

3. Understand the importance and methods by which the occlusion can be reestablished.

4. Understand the management of dentoalveolar trauma.

5. Understand how the interaction of biomechanics and biology influences decision making in fracture
management.

6. Understand the biomechanics of the mandible and maxilla.

7. Understand how mandibular fractures are classified.

8. Know appropriate methods to diagnose fractures.

9. Know the indications for open or closed treatment of fractures.

10. Know how a lag screw is applied.

11. Understand the concepts and techniques of relative and absolute stability and how these techniques affect
fracture healing.

12. Know the difference between load-sharing and load-bearing fixation and which fractures are amenable to
these methods.

13. Know acceptable methods for treating fractures in all regions of the mandible (condyle, angle, body,
symphysis), including simple, comminuted, and defect fractures.

14. Be familiar with surgical approaches to the facial skeleton.

15. Understand the treatment principles for fractures of the midfacial skeleton, including maxillary, zygomatic,
naso-orbito-ethmoidal, orbital and frontal sinus.

16. Know the principles of mandibular and midface reconstruction.

17. Understand the diagnosis and management of complications to include nonunion, malunion, and infection.

18. Be familiar with the current standards in orbital surgery.
