1.

The film depicts people building themselves a rocket and a

contraption fling it all the way to the moon, where they
find fantastic landscapes and unusual creatures.
2. In 1902, in real life, the Wright Brothers were developing
flight.

3. In each shot, the camera doesnt move at all. It is the

movement of the actors, props, and cuts to different
scenes that make the film visually interesting.
4. The purpose of the film is to entertain the audience with
its fantastical special effects and story. The film also
contains some satirical elements (I am told - it doesnt
make much sense to me)
5. Many parts of the film show the development of special
effects at the time. Lavish painted backdrops on their sets
provide the majority of the visuals. Paintings, models,
animation and clever cuts are utilised. The film was also in
colour, as each frame individually had the colour added by
band with inks.
6. It tells a story without the use of dialogue by using over
exaggerated movements and frequent changes of setting.
7. The film is 15 minutes long, rather than being a short
single shot with no time to tell a real story.
8. With this film Melies moved on cinema, onward from
Muybridges still images that showed movements, and the
Lumier Brothers simple single-shot films, by tying
together multiple shots to create a narrative, and by fully
utilising theatrical production values and camera tricks to
full potential.
