Friday, February 08, 2008
My sister Anna and I decided to join forces and start our own business in late 2007.
Being new(ish) mums, we thought our own business would be the perfect way to earn a
living, unleash our creative urges and most importantly, allow us to spend time with our
babies. We have a passion for children's clothing and accessories, and will soon be
creating a label of our own, Ivy Designs! Watch this space :)

Ideas
Saturday, May 03, 2008
In the past few months our ideas book has been filling up with lots of designs! There has
been much cutting, sewing, sampling and testing going on...not to mention the sweat and
tears (our own). The best designs will make it to our shop, hopefully by July. Luckily we
have our own little models to test on, so customers know that the items will withstand the
demands of real little people!
In the meantime, Ivy (now 7 months) has cut two teeth! Ouch! Lots of dribble.

Photo Shoot
Monday, June 16, 2008
We had our first photo shoot last week. It was fun, tiring
and a big learning curve! What do they say about working
with children??? All in all, it was a good day. Lots of
smiles and a few wee tears (nothing a feather duster
couldn't fix - see pic) Our good friend Ron took the photos
for us. You must see his gorgeous photos at

Baby Shower
Saturday, June 21, 2008
Today I attended a lovely baby shower for my beautiful friend, Danielle. The mother-to-be
was gorgeous and glowing, a yummy mummy indeed :) Danielle and Carl are expecting a
baby girl, bless. My gift included a book called Gallop by Rufus Butler Seder. I loved it the
minute I saw it! The book uses technology called scanimation, where each page brings
animals to life with images that literally moves. Scanimation is a six-phase animation
process that combines the "persistence of vision" principle with a striped acetate overlay
to give the illusion of movement. Even hubbie liked it! I also bought bub some Bonds
clothing, great basics. The baby shower was good fun, we played a peg game and some
quizzes. I received a cute little cookie cutter set as a favour. Posted by ivy designs at

Meet Ivy, the illustrated little girl
Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Tucker created 'Ivy' for us. Such fun seeing a character come to life! Ivy also has a little
male friend, but we don't know what to call him...suggestions anyone??
Happy Anniversary!
Monday, August 18, 2008
Hubbie and I celebrated our wedding anniversary last week. I had a good excuse to
splurge on a big bunch of cherry blossoms to mark the occassion, as they were the
theme to our wedding two years ago. Incidently, Ivy's middle name (Mai) also means
cherry blossom. Yes, I am a big fan of these beautiful flowers. I would love to travel to
Japan one day, for the cherry blossoms...and the fabrics!

Tuesday, October 21, 2008
You may have noticed that my blog now looks a little strange and plain...well, that is my
fault for playing around with the settings. No matter what I did, I couldn't enable the
comments and so silly me, I tried to do a few things with the html code. Instead, I totally
wiped out everything that was designed for me :(
Update: I managed to restore some things but my comments still do not work! The html
code says comments blocked. If anyone can help please email me on

Blast from the past
Wednesday, October 22, 2008
I had a nice little surprise the other day. Hubbie decided to tidy some of our things in
storage at my mother's place and came across an old cross stitch I did in 1993, as a
teenager. It was unloved and dusty. He cleaned it up, took it to the framers and
presented it to me all wrapped up as a present! How sweet! I remember working tirelessly
on this project, counting all those tiny crosses! I must have had so much time on my
hands back then...

Russian Doll Revival
Wednesday, November 12, 2008
Unless you have been hiding under a rock for the past year or so, you would have
noticed a Russisan Doll revival! (also known as Matryoshkas, nesting dolls and
babushkas). In the last few months we have sold a whole heap of our tops with the
Russian Doll brooch. Well, my fixation with these cute characters have not abated and I
finally purchased some fabric from the amazingly talented Kristen Doran. Kristen is a
Sydney based textile and fashion designer. Kristen's creations are awe inspiring and her
blog is a fascinating read for any fabric lover! Look out for an upcoming interview on this
blog with Kristen soon. Shortly, I will present you with an interview I did with another
successful (and super creative) business woman, Kara Smith! I have coveted her bags
since I first laid eyes on them nearly two years ago.
Posted by ivy designs at 10:52AM (+11:00)
You have a background in Graphic Design. How did you make the leap to fabulous
handbag designer?
I’m embarrassed to say as I am a workaholic! I start at about 6am, eating breakfast at the
computer while I check emails. I like to respond to people quickly, ensuring orders and
queries are fulfilled as people really appreciate this. Being an online business really
19
means that you have to be available all the time, so the weekends are online as well
(though I do have a life!). I usually finish up about 6-7pm, getting orders ready to send the
next day, and finalising any of my paperwork. Being a one-man band is very time-
consuming!
I have been surprised at the array of women (and men buying gifts for partners) carrying
my bags. The age varies but generally its 28-45 yr olds who really appreciate having
something a little different to the main stream. These women come from all over
Australia, not just the big cities – and also internationally, especially the US. Some
women actually collect them – women who have an appreciation for unique fabrics and
finishes. So much so, there are women with 10-20 of my clutches out there in their
wardrobes!
You recently won some great business awards. Any advice for newbies (like myself) to
the world of small business?
Some people say “you are lucky”. It’s not luck at all, it’s bloody hard work! I was just
overwhelmed to win 2 business awards: New Business and Home-based Business in the
Blue Mountains Business Awards. The competition was fierce, with very established
shops and businesses up against me. I thought I wouldn’t stand a chance. But the judges
thought my business showed the most promise in it’s substance, ideals and
environmental stance. It’s corny to say it – but believe in yourself. Never stop working and
never give up on your idea. Be protective of it as you will get a lot of advice to do
something different. I find this advice is usually from people that are unhappy in their job
so say ‘thanks’ politely and shelve it.You need to be involved in everything you can
including your local business network, go to as many free seminars or workshops that
your State runs for Small Business. Ask lots of questions, get an accountant, network
with other designers and form great relationships so you can help eachother. It’s
wonderful to be able to ring or email other designers when it’s all getting a bit tough –
everyone is in the same boat and can boost your spirits quickly or lend an ear to a new
idea.
You use vintage fabrics and buttons. How important is sustainable design to you?
Very important! If I didn’t commit to creating bags and scarves out of vintage and recycled
fabrics, buttons and buckles, I would just be another bag brand. My bags are unique, they
cannot be copied, and are for the woman who appreciates having something not mass-
produced. Even the interiors of my bags are recycled. There is so much waste out there
and some of it is of exceptional quality. As I have grown up in the 2nd hand clothing
industry (my Mother has sold 2nd hand clothes for over 25 years at Sydney markets) we
see the incredible stuff people consider ready to dump. Just because a button is missing,
a little bit of rust stain on a jacket, etc – it’s funny how people don’t know how to sew,
darn or clean items. Our society is becoming incredibly disposable, and this is not
sustainable for our future.
It’s hard to say... It changes all the time! I like the bigger bags so for me the 10tote range
or x-large is more my style. The 10totes have become a popular baby bag choice and
that’s something I look forward to using with my first baby soon. It’s usually the fabrics that
20
win me over – if it’s a 1950’s barkcloth, in any shape, it wins hands down! What’s in store
for the future of Kara Smith?
With our first baby due in early January 2009 my focus will be on my family for a while. I
have two lovely local women in the Blue Mountains that help me sew, which I am so
happy about as it puts money back into my local community. This will continue as I won’t
be able to dedicate the time to sewing but will be able to create new designs.I also create
unique scarves (sold out currently) – which will be out again in time for winter. These are
just fabulous with a big overcoat and can change the look of any outfit. I’d say baby bags
might grow as I learn what is required in one! I create 10totes for mothers with bubs now.
My partner, Steven, wants me to create his very own ‘masculine’ baby bag too! Kara's

Kristen Doran
Thursday, November 20, 2008
Clothing, textiles, accessories, stationary, toys, graphics... The hugely talented designer,
Kristen Doran, has done it all! Based in Sydney Australia, Kristen is also the author of the
book "Crafts to Inspire". Kristen's fabric prints are immensely popular and it isn't hard to
see why...I for one, can't wait to get my hands on the "Drummer Boys". I wanted to find
out more about Kristen, so I asked her a few questions... You studied Fashion and
Graphic Design. After your studies, how did your career progress to where it is now?
I worked for a Fashion manufacturer for 4 years doing storyboards and textile designs.
Then I worked for a charity for 2 years as a graphic designer. Next... 2 kids. Then to keep
myself in the creative mode I started making handbags for friends. This led me to
designing fabrics for my handbags. Bloggers requested to purchase the fabrics and it
snowballed from there.
If you could turn back time and give yourself one piece of advice before starting your
work in textile design and production, what would it be?
Things always take longer than you think!! So add more time on the end.
What are your inspirations when designing new prints and objects?
My kids, my surroundings, things from my childhood.
How do you balance a young family with running your own business? Just.
School is great, my littlest started this year and that has given me the extra time I needed
to squish everything into a day. School hols can be a little crazy. I try not to achieve so
much then, just have more fun times with the kids.
Can you explain the textile design and production process, how an idea in your head
comes to life on a piece of fabric. 21
I think about designs for a LONG time before I touch the computer. I might do some
sketching then scan those in. Then next is a lot of playing around (usually very late at
night) until I'm happy with it. The file goes to the printer, the fabrics are ordered and
colours chosen.
You have made everything from softies, to notebooks, to clothing…are there any other
things you’d like to create with your textiles and prints?
I would love do some larger scale designs for interiors. I'm very inspired by Cloth and
Surface Art and their success here in Australia. And more clothing. It's a little ego boost
when the Mum's at school ask 'where did you get that skirt?' and I can say I designed it.
Sounds like I'm bragging, but someones got to! What other designers do you most
admire? See above. Also Lotta Jansdotter, Lara Cameron and Shannon Lamden.
What’s your favourite song or album at the moment?
I'm really loving Joss Stone - mind body & soul. It's a real pick me up when I'm stressing
about life not going along so smoothly.

Market Report
Sunday, December 07, 2008
My sister Anna (right) and I (left) We are still on a high from our first experience selling
at the markets! The Finders Keepers exceeded our expectations in so many ways.
Firstly, the location was excellent, so much space! The Carriageworks (a former railway
carriage and blacksmith workshop) is industrial and modern at the same time, an
inspiring piece of architecture in itself. Secondly, the amount of people in attendance was
staggering. When the doors opened on the Friday night, there was a huge flood of people
and it didn't seem to end. In fact, it got busier and noisier as the night progressed. With
the band playing and bubbly flowing, the vibe was amazing! We had shoppers coming at
us left right and centre. Saturday was a longer trading day and also very busy. We moved
a lot of stock. I was quite flustered for most of the time (and boy, was it HOT inside that
building!). Anna, my very pregnant sister, did an amazing job getting through the long
days. What blew us away the most was our wonderful customers and fellow stallholders.
We met so many lovely customers and inspiring artisans. Everyone was exceptionally
supportive and encouraging! The Ivy Designs' stall was definitely a combined effort. Our
father made some of the props, my best friend helped with the set up and selling, her
husband took the photos, our husbands looked after the babies and we had a whole
bunch of family and friends come as support crew (mostly shopping and drinking really!).
All in all, it was well worth the effort. Not sure if we can get the same kind of help at every
market we do, but this was a good start.
Some more photos below...
Ps. Thanks for popping in with goodies Kristen! Your dolls were a hit!

Lists
Thursday, December 11, 2008
I am definitely a lists person. I have a "to do" list on my computer desktop that gets
looked at and things get crossed off every day. When I want things done around the
house, I give my husband a list (with numbers in order of priority) - this works wonders!
So here is a list, just for fun. It from Katiecrackernuts blog. You'll be surprised at how
much you have (or haven't done!).
The idea is to cut and paste the list and bold the things you have done.
To market to market...
Friday, December 12, 2008
Some of our items will be for sale at the Old Bus Depot markets in Canberra this Sunday
(14th Dec). We won't be there physically but look out for the ladies from the Handle With

And the final one -- Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he
was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The
winner was a four year old child whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who
had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old
gentleman's yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his Mother asked what
he had said to the neighbour, the little boy said, 'Nothing, I just helped him cry'

Happy 2009!
Saturday, January 10, 2009
Hello and happy New Year! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and found the time
to relax. We spent the week with another family in Nelson Bay, on the NSW north coast.
It was a beautiful location and we had a great time. The weather was hot!! Now things are
slowly getting back to normal...hubby at work, Ivy in daycare (twice a week) and me, back
to putting the finishing touches on our Winter range and also catching up on some orders.
When it comes to eating, Ivy has decided to become Little Miss Independent. Problem is,
she makes the BIGGEST mess and I am forever moping up. Ivy has now developed the
habit of completing her meal by tipping the bowl of unfinished food on her head - I kid you
not, this happens at almost every sitting. Ivy has about three baths a day because of this
odd behaviour! Everything gets dirty, including the high chair and the floor. So on a hot
day last week, I sat her in the courtyard and she happily ate her meal. After she tipped
the bowl on her head, what did I do? I took the hose out and sprayed the high chair - with
Ivy in it! She loved it and ended up playing with the hose by herself...
Hosing down the high chair - and the baby! (beans on the floor)
Yabbies
I kept the holiday vibe going for just a bit longer today by taking Ivy to Palm Beach, to visit
a friend and her kids. I also thought Ivy deserved a day out after a bout of roseola, poor
love.
We had a great day! I really enjoyed catching up with my girlfriend and Ivy loved playing
in the sand. We even caught some yabbies! Ivy also tried some new foods - beetroot,
feta and meatballs. The latter was the clear winner! I would love more relaxing days like
this.

Bushfires
Monday, February 09, 2009
On a much sadder and serious note...wherever you are in the world, you would have
heard about the tragedy that has struck Australia. Victoria has experienced the worst
bushfires in the country's history with numerous homes and lives lost. My heart goes out 31
to everyone affected, the pain and devastation is unfathomable. I personally have
contributed monetary funds to assist the victims and will also be sending goods on behalf
of Ivy Designs to help as many children as possible. I urge you to do the same.

Flicking through the pages of Shop 4 Kids, there are soooo many things that caught my
eye...the mag is truly jam packed with stuff. For starters, I have put in an order for the
Spellbound Tutu by Lollydandy. It is an amazing piece of art and Ivy will have so much
fun wearing it! I will also be getting my hands on some adorable mushrooms by Crafsty (I
love supporting Etsy sellers). It was also nice to see two of my favourite retailers in the
mag - My Messy Room and Baby's Got Style. I am totally envious of baby Allegra's
wardrobe!

Peek-a-boo
Saturday, February 14, 2009
Rachel Richter, photographer extraordinaire, has taken the most gorgeous photos of our
Winter '09 collection! This is just a sneak peek and all will be revealed next month when
the range is available to purchase. As a result of our feature in Shop 4 Kids, we have
already had calls from eager customers enquiring about the Owl Pinny above. Even
though we are getting help these days, our clothing production still takes a fair amount
time - especially all the handcrafted touches. We have a very busy couple of months
coming up!
PS. Aren't these red ballet slippers the cutest shoes ever?? They are from Cheeky Little
Soles. Infact, all of the shoes in our Winter '09 shoot are from CLS. Ivy has been wearing
them since she was a few months old and they are great now that she is learning to walk.

So, for those crafters and budding fashion entrepreneurs out there, here's my two cents
worth...go and get yourself these two books!...
This book by Meg Mateo Ilasco is a great help to artists and crafters who want to turn
their passion into a fully fledged business. Everything is covered from deciding on a
business name to marketing to selling and all the legalities involved with a business. The
in-depth interviews with names such as Denyse Schmidt and Jill Bliss provide inspiration
and practical advice. Furthermore, this book is cute to boot! A real pleasure to read!
'Fashion for Profit' by Frances Harder, is for those with a particular interest in starting a
clothing business. It reminds me of my old uni textbooks - although I do find it much more
interesting! It covers in detail the all important aspect of COSTING! I for one, know how
easy it is to let your creativity lead you astray! It is one thing to make something as a
hobby, and a completely different story when making it a product that will sell in many
units - and sustain a living (or atleast cover your costs in the first couple of years!). It is a
pretty dry book, but great for those looking for a straight-forward read about the fashion
business. I have found it a very useful tool.
Handmade Stamp

handcarved stamp Another Etsy purchase to show you - I bought a custom made rubber
stamp from The Mayberry Sparrow. It's so adorable, I just love the handmade look about
it. Corrabelle used one of the Ivy Designs' illustrations and handcarved the stamp. I am
going to be stamping everything in sight! These stamps would make a lovely customised
gift for someone. Posted by ivy designs at 01:16PM (+11:00)

A few one off designs for Mathilda's Market
Wednesday, March 04, 2009
We have a stall at the fabulous Mathilda's Market on 22nd March in Sydney. I'm really
looking forward to it! We will have all of our summer stock on sale and might even have
some Winter pieces available (hopefully!!). These are some one-off tops we made
especially for the markets.

Open Room
Friday, March 06, 2009
A fellow blogger requested to do an "open house" tour at my place. I think she had the
impression that my home was somehow worthy of a show and tell. I had to decline. I
would love to, but sadly, it's nothing to write about, plus it's a mess! With some of the
production of our winter range happening in my lounge room at the moment and hardly
any time for housework, the last thing I want to do is to put my place on display! What I
will do though, is show you pics of Ivy's room, which is normally the neatest room in the
house. When I get around to tidying her wardrobe, I might even be brave enough to show
you that...just don't ask to see mine! In a few weeks, I will hopefully have a new studio so
I am excited about that (pending council approval). I love love love the open house tours
on the Bloesem Kids site. Some of my favourite labels are featured, including Smallville
and Misha Lulu.

Daisy Maid Top This is a beautiful blouse I purchased for my daughter from Australian
boutique label Thula Thula. It is absolutely divine. Naomi is the exceptionally talented
designer behind this up and coming label. The workmanship is pure quality and it isn't
hard to see that she has a background in fashion design and production. Thula Thula will
be at Mathilda's Market in Melbourne this weekend, so make sure you pop in. Also, you
can check out what's happening on the Thula Thula blog.

Molly Mouse
Wednesday, March 11, 2009
I recently gave away some fabric scraps to a few forum friends. I didn't want the scraps to
go to waste. Little did I know that some of my scraps would be returned to me,
transformed into a gorgeous creature! I had the honour of naming her Molly Mouse. Isn't
Molly the most stylish mouse you have ever seen? Check out the bling bling! Jaclyn from
"Honeybunch Designs" will be at Mathilda's Market in QLD on Sunday 22nd March, with
some of her adorable softies for sale.

Handmade Cards
Monday, March 16, 2009
Being a crafty creative type, I often find it hard to keep myself focused and motivated
doing the same thing over and over again. For example, I am working on some bibs at
the moment. They are for an order due next week and so I thought I would make them
myself instead of getting them done with the rest of our winter production (which should
be available in stores in a couple of weeks). In total, there are 40 bibs to make but I
simply can not sit there and make the whole lot in one go. My mind keeps wandering and
I think about other things I can create. So what have I been itching to make? Cards! They
were fun to put together and like a breath of fresh air! They will be for sale at Mathilda's
this coming weekend ... now back to the bibs...

Productive day
Thursday, March 19, 2009
I love being able to work from home and spend time with Ivy, even though it's not easy
getting any work done! I usually have to sneak in a bit of work during nap time. Most of
my work is done after hours (which is why I am still up at midnight most nights!). When
Ivy is around, my eyes are constantly darting between the job at hand and the
mischevious toddler. So I am surprised I got a bit done today. Bibs nearly finished (just
need to do topstitching and attach the snaps) and I even made a few cot comforters. The
comforters turned out really well with the beautiful quilter's flannel from our winter range,
wonderfully soft and light. I am so envious of some of the gorgeous quilts my blogging
35
friends have made. Check this one out by Amy over at Bad Skirt

Daddy: "Why don't we have an icecream and mess up your favourite new top!" (note the
totally mismatched leggings) "Lets go for a walk in the sun! Who needs the sunshade?!"
"You look like you need a rest...in the gutter"
"Oh look a fountain! Why don't you get yourself all wet! Your new leather shoes really do
need a soaking!"
"Time for a snack. Should we put your grubby top back on and sit you at the table like a
little lady?"
Daddy did score lots of brownie points with this surprise purchase for me...some really
cute buttons from Buttons Buttons (25 Nurses Walk, The Rocks Sydney). How cute!
Market Report

We had a very busy day at Mathilda's Market today. How I managed to survive on 5
hours sleep the night before, I don't know! Unfortunately I left my camera at home, so no
pics, sorry. Thank you to all our lovely customers and people who stopped by for a chat,
you really made it worthwhile! We have a lot of new subscribers to the blog (welcome)
and to celebrate this, we will have a giveaway very soon! I just want to say thanks also to

hours sleep! Yes, we were out together); Anne and Sue, the organisers for putting on
such a well organised event; Leonie and Glen from Tippie Toes for helping me pack at
the end of the day (it was lovely to put a face to the name!); Carolyn for popping in to see

Come on down... Rousabout Studio, you are the winner of our giveaway! Congrats, I
know the goodies will go to a lovely home. We will be in touch shortly to get your postal
details :)
I loved reading all of the replies. Thanks everyone for putting in the effort with your
answers. I have never even heard of some of these places, so will have to check them
out when I am next in the area. All the markets sound so charming! I lived in London a
few years ago and my favourite market is/was the Old Spitalfields Market in East London.
I haven't been there since the refurb but I used to love it for the location, bargains and
characters that you would bump into! I loved wandering around and rummaging through
the eclectic array of goodies - I found a genuine vintage Mui Mui handbag there once for
38
10 pounds! Often I would pop in for a curry at Brick Lane and then a few drinks at one of
the cool bars nearby. One of the most memorable things I have ever done at a market
was get my belly button pierced in Camden (London). I thought it was a good idea at the
time, but it has long been removed!
Note: Only 22 comments included in draw, as I didn't include my comment or any double
ups.

Patience is a virtue
Saturday, April 04, 2009
This is why i need to say thanks to my stockists and eager customers for waiting for the
imminent arrival of our winter stock, which has been slightly delayed. We have been
taking a few pre orders from customers and will send these as soon as possible. I have
been working extra hard, especially with our little family under the weather. Life has been
extremely hectic, infact I don't ever remember working this hard! Things have been
neglected...like housework, family time and friends... not to mention sleep! I am looking
forward to coming up for air very soon.

Before (woman's top/dress/pregnancy outfit?)
My husband loves second hand stores. He can't walk past a St Vincent De Paul or
Salvo's store without popping in for a look. He loves flea markets, junk yards, antique
shops, garage sales...heaven forbid, he even likes council cleanup day when people
have all their junk on the sides of the road! He loves that show on TV called Antique
Roadshow and swears that some of his items are worth just as much. Until he met me,
he hordered a lot of collectables. Sadly for him though, we've had to get rid of most of his
'memorabilia' - except for the 20 boxes of precious vinyl records! I also have a close
friend, Lillian, who has the most impeccable style. Lillian's look is very eclectic, she mixes
a lot of thrift finds with designer brands and high street pieces - and she manages to pull
it off everytime! She is always surprising me with the latest gorgeous dress or necklace
she has found at a ridiculous price. Me, I am not so lucky (except for the 10 pound Mui
Mui bag). I love looking for the next bargain but I rarely find it! This weekend, however, I
think I did well finding this $2 dress from Vinnie's...although I couldn't help myself and
gave it a mini makeover!

Pic of our stall from the last Finders Keepers market (Nov 08)
The next market for Ivy Designs will be on the 15th and 16th May at The Finders
Keepers. This is a great event, with goods catering for all ages. The Finders Keepers is
housed in the fantastic Carriageworks buiding in Redfern, featuring a bar and live music.
The last time we were there, I purchased these great perspex buttons from Made By
White.
Smallville
Friday, April 17, 2009
Smallville is one of my favourite labels. Jimin from California is the talent behind this
beautiful range of children's clothing. I first came across Smallville on Etsy, but they have
since opened an online store, which can be viewed here. Jimin's background in art is
displayed not only in her clothing, but her blog. It's simply gorgeous! I just purchased the
Bow Tie Tuxedo Pants above. Here are some other favourite pieces from Smallville that
caught my eye.

Stepford Dreams
This is a blog I have been following since day one. It appeals to my sense of humour. In
short, it details "the adventures of an unlikely housewife". Carolyn, an ex lawyer, is witty,
sarcastic, entertaining and VERY funny. Stepford Dreams was recently catapulted into
blog heaven by becoming a "Blog of Note". Yes, the secret is out and now I am doing my
bit to spread the word.
Why? Because this blogger is also doing a selfless act and needs your help. You see,
Carolyn hates exercise with a passion but she is participating in the Mother's Day Classic
run to raise money for cancer research. Cancer is a disease she knows about all too well.
In her own words... "I know it is the global financial crisis and all but if I'm wearing a
daggy outift and running til I'm a tomato then you can all afford to cough up a few
dollars...".
To help Carolyn reach her $2000 goal, donate here. Well done Carolyn, you're doing a
wonderful thing.

Shop Window
Sunday, April 19, 2009
I woke up early this morning to collect hubbie and Ivy from the airport. They arrived back
from a week's holiday in North Queensland. My husband was a brave man to take our 18
month old on a holiday all by himself! I don't know many fathers who would do that, so
kudos to him! I missed them so much, but it was the first real break I had since having the
baby. I managed to sort out a lot of paperwork, meet up with a few friends, relax a little
and even did a spring clean of the house. I feel like a new woman! I was thrilled to see a
few of our pieces in My Messy Room's shop window. This was a first, so a photo had to
be taken as a keepsake. We were really busy with orders this weekend, thank you to our
customers! I wonder if it had something to do with this interesting blog post. Thanks for
the write up Stepford Dreams, you are too kind.
My Messy Room in Summer Hill, NSW
The Studio
Ivy Designs normally operates out of two places 1. My sister's place, where she has a
spare room and 2. My dining room table! I am, however, very excited as my little home
studio is actually in the making as we speak. We had big sliding doors built this weekend
to seal off part of the courtyard, which has now given us an extra room at the back of our
apartment. I have been painting the brick work till all hours. There are a few sneaky pics
below but I'll take more photos when it's all tidy (which could be a while!). I can't wait to
show you the fantastic set of drawers I picked up from Salvo's yesterday - yes, Salvos!
Unlike me, I actually found something decent! Really decent. It's arriving at my place
tomorrow, hopefully.
Ivy's Room
Ivy will be moving into a single bed very soon, so I am taking the opportunity redo the
room a little. We haven't got the bed yet but I have already bought the bedding and
cushions from Adairs. I made this fun cushion today (front and back):
Below is a wall hanging I made with some gorgeous new Japanese fabric that I
purchased recently from http://www.superbuzzy.com/. Some of the fabric will be used as
appliques on one-off pieces for the markets. Something else I am working on... a knitted
beanie for a friend's impending baby. Honestly, I just can't keep still even if I tried. I
wonder how many people out there are like me, always wanting to create - I think it's an
obession. An obsession that does drive me crazy sometimes! Posted by ivy designs at

Thrift Find
Friday, May 01, 2009
I am so happy with this purchase from Salvos. Guess how much I got it for? $50! It is in
perfect condition, solid timber and the drawers slide in and out easily. I have no idea what
decade it is from - I am guessing 70s? It even came complete with hippy drawer liners
inside (which I will be replacing). I just gave it a spray with furniture polish and voila!
Pictured here is also the fairy dress I bought for Ivy - she loves it but my husband hates it!
He was horrified that I would buy such a thing - I told him to stop being a spoiled sport
42 and that all little girls like to play dress ups!

Turning Japanese
Thursday, May 07, 2009
Once in a while, if I have time, I create custom designed items for customers. This is a
dress I recently completed for an 11 month old girl to wear to a wedding. I was so excited
that the customer wanted me to make something Japanese inspired, as this is a theme
close to my heart. My own wedding dress incorporated a vintage obi, pictured below (btw,
I am not Japanese). The little dress above has a simple babydoll silhouette, with a pleat
at the front and back. I have made an origami style rosette brooch using co-ordinating
fabric. Matching bloomers will finish this outfit beautifully. Can't wait to see it being worn!
My couture wedding dress was designed and made by Lisa Merton from Culture Shock.
Below is the final sketch of my dress before it was made up. It was so exciting to see the
dress come to life! Lisa is incredibly talented - you can view her blog here.

My weekend
Sunday, May 10, 2009
To all the mother's out there, happy mother's day today! You deserve a pat on the back -
I know first hand how challenging being a mother can be. I also know how rewarding and
fulfilling it is :) I really believe that children are life's greatest gift. I feel very blessed to
have my little girl, she makes me laugh every single day. She is my inspiration, not just
for the business but for life in general.
Carolyn, I was thinking of you today, running in the rain at the Mother's Day Classic!
What a great deed.
Since my husband 'forgot' mother's day last year (my first!), he made up for it this year. It
started yesterday with breakfast in bed. The three of us then spent the morning at the
local school fair. I tortured my husband by dressing Ivy in her fairy dress, complete with
wand (pic above). We had a great time - on the rides, looking at all the stalls, eating and
Ivy rode a pony for the first time! For dinner, I was spoilt with a gorgeous home cooked
curry and a very very nice bottle of red. After a lie in this morning, I was greeted with
more home cooked yumminess - a Spanish omelette and freshly brewed coffee.
Impressive. We have a 'no presents' policy in our household when it comes to Valentine's
Day, Mother's Day and Father's Day - the only mandatory thing is a handmade card.
Hubbie and Ivy have now given me a bit of peace and quiet to finish some work for the
Finders Keepers markets coming up this week. This is what we're up to in the studio...
Applique tees Applique tees - we will be selling these as sets, with matching pants.

Anna, is working on lots of new hair candy. So if you are in Sydney, come and see us!

Ivy is 20 months old and we thought it was time to move her into a 'Big Girl's Bed'. When
we first put the bed up, she squealed with delight and jumped right in. She was very
excited. That night, however, there were a few tears before bedtime. It took a couple of
nights of getting used to, but now she is back to her old sleeping habits, which is good!
This Ikea bed is great for the transition from a cot. It extends to 3 lengths, from cot size to
a standard single size. It also has the railings on the side and prevents the little ones from
falling out...it's very affordable too! The great thing now is every night my husband and I
can also get into the bed with Ivy (not at the same time) and read before lights out.
I took the opportunity to do up Ivy's room - and had a whole lot of fun in the process! The
wall decals are from Love Mae. The range at Love Mae is just beautiful! I love the vintage
feel, quite different to others on the market. The quality is excellent. I also put up some
fairy lights to go with the bunting on the ceiling. The handles on the bedside table were
changed with some crystal ones I got from Reclaim. The rustic bench along the wall was
from Ellen's Interiors. My little girl also received some new toys, the main ones being a
wooden oven, tea set and doll cradle - which she claimed as her own, as you can see
below...

I won this! Ani and Trio bedding
Tuesday, June 02, 2009
There is always a giveaway or competition happening somewhere in the blogesphere...I
love them! It's not like the lottery where the chances of winning are something like a
billion to one (so to speak). I have entered a few giveaways and this is the first time I
have won something! And it is gorgeous and perfect for Ivy's new room - a reversible quilt
and sheet set from Australian company Ani and Trio. The colours are so sweet and I
certainly have a thing for polka dots. The quality is excellent. In its current size, Ivy's bed
fits the flat sheet and the quilt but not the fitted sheet. I will just have to save it for baby
number 2...whenever that may be!
Babyology Review
Thursday, June 04, 2009
Speaking of being quick off the mark with publicity, it is 8.30am and I was alerted by Little
Miss Stella about this...it's a lovely write up about Ivy Designs on the cool website,
Babyology. Thanks Jaime for the great review! Unfortunately our 'Love Birds' and 'Owl'
dresses are running low in our online boutique but we will be making up a small number
for Mathilda's market in July. Any remaining items will be available online after the market
(5 July). As usual, please enquire with our stockists (see column on right) for further info
on stock availability.

"It's really simple. I love how every photo tells a story. Some short stories, some long
tales. I want to know what is your favourite photo of yourself. Everyone has one. The
photo they look at and smile. It reminds them of something, some time, some place. A
moment in time. So share the photo, share the story and then tag three other people. I
want to see photos and stories all around the blogosphere".
48
I have lot of photos I could share, unfortunately most of them are not in digital format. So
my pick is this one below:
It is a shot of my best friend of 22 years, Bianca (right) and I in...you guess it...Spain! I
like this shot, it makes me smile everytime I see it. I can't remember if I was trying not to
laugh or doing my best pout. It was taken in 2001 when (a) I lived abroad and travelled
for about 2 years (b) I didn't have a care in the world (c) I was skinny :)
I remember this day very well. We walked past a costume shop in Seville a few days
earlier and decided to come back and have our photos taken. There was a lot of giggling
in the change room as we tried on all the flamenco dresses. After the photos were taken
we went to a nearby tapas bar to escape the 40 degree heat outside. I recall stumbling
out of the bar a few hours later (having cosumed a good amount of Sangria). We got lost
but eventually navigated our way back to the hotel at some point. Bianca and I spent a
month in Spain. We travelled quite a bit together and even shared a bedroom in London
for a year! Nice memories...

Australian Women Online Article
Thursday, June 18, 2009
Tania McCartney (Aussie mum, writer,
editor, publisher, kids author, bloggist,
traveller) has written a fantastic article for
Australian Women Online about kids
clothing. See what some Australian
designers (Ivy Designs included) have to
say about boutique versus mass produced
clothing. I have to say, it's a novelty for me
to be quoted in an article!

Five years ago we bought "Daisy Banks Cottage" on Bruny Island in Tasmania
(Australia). Set on 5 acres, Daisy Banks is a lovely historic house on the waterfront. We
renovated the house a little - sanded the floorboards, new lick of paint inside, new carpet
and added a large water tank. We also furnished it completely, ready for holiday makers.
We had romantic ideas about spending many holidays there ourselves. Sadly in the last
five years, we only made it down there four times - albeit four wonderful times. Our
favourite past times at Daisy Banks included spending time with family and friends who
came to visit, collecting oysters, mussels and scallops, going for gorgeous walks, seeing
all the beautiful wild life around and visiting our lovely neighbours (and hearing all the
weird and wonderful stories about the happenings). My husband loved taking the boat out
on the water.
Over the years the house needed more and more maintanence. I guess old houses are
like that. With one main income and a baby, the cottage was getting too expensive for us
to keep...and it was preventing us from purchasing the family home. So last year we
decided to put Daisy Banks on the market. We were ecstatic when a buyer came along in
the first day! Unfortunately it fell through at the last minute. We were devastated, since
we knew another buyer probably wouldn't come around for a while (it is a very very small
market). It has taken a year but we have finally sold the cottage to a lovely local lady, who 51
we believe will give it the TLC it needs. Bruny Island is a beautiful part of the world and
we will be back one day. Now a new chapter awaits us! So exciting!

My blogging absence can also be explained by preparation for Mathilda's Market this
Sunday. This time around, I don't feel as prepared as usual but I am sure it will be fine on
the day - at least I hope so anyway! So if you are in Sydney, come and visit us at St
Ignatius' College, Riverview. Inside the main hall. Tambourine Bay Road, Lane Cove.
Between 9am and 1pm. It's a certainty that I will be picking up a few things for Ivy.
I have also been preoccupied with house hunting. We have put our current place on the
market and now looking for a new home. Our first inspections are this weekend and the
thought of so many people trapsing through the house is a concern! We go to Auction at
the end of the month, which is exciting and nerve wracking at the same time. Just can't
wait for it all to be over so we can find our family home...wherever that may be.
Hope you are all keeping well. Say hi if you are at Mathilda's xxx

I have only ever attended one other auction before, just as a spectator. I can tell you that
being on the other side as the vendor, is extremely nervewracking! Over the past month,
we have had our place open for inspections every weekend. We have been living with
friends in the meantime, to avoid having to tidy up everyday! Ivy is possibly the messiest
child on earth, so this saved us a lot of cleaning. On the day of the auction, the sun was
shining brightly. This was a good omen, since every other day was gloomy. We also
prayed the night before (something I don't do very often) and hubbie did some space
clearing. This involved going into each room of the house with burnt sage, followed by the
chiming of a prayer bowl - whilst thinking positive thoughts. Space clearing may seem like
a hippy drippy thing to do (I must admit I still think it's a bit funny), but we wanted to do
everything possible to achieve a good result...and this we did! We had 5 registered
bidders and sold our place for above the reserve price. Our place is going to a lovely
young couple. The wife especially liked Ivy's room!
We are looking to move about an hour away on the coast, a big sea change for us city
dwellers! We are very excited!!! In the meantime, I have lots of packing to do - as well as
getting organised for our summer production being released in Sep/Oct. Stay tuned...will
try to not to keep you waiting for too long for an update :)

This handmade doll. How beautiful is she? Currently nameless, the doll was custom
made by the ever so talented Tina from Tiny Concept. It's for Ivy's 2nd birthday coming
up in a few months. She wears a stunning dress made with 30 year old lace. I am trying
to think of a name for her, something old fashioned...any ideas? Tina also surprised me
with a few of her sweet cards. Thank you Tina!!!! You really made my day.
55
Secondly, this vintage rocking chair, an ebay purchase. Incidently, not long ago I asked
Tina for some tips on how to restore a chair - she is pretty deft at these things...(check
out these chair makeovers here and here). So I jumped at the chance to buy this chair in
need of some TLC. I think I will try Tina's 'white treatment'. Not sure when I will find the
time to makeover a chair...anyway...
And lastly, here is a handmade blanket and cushion from Etsy. I love granny squares and
this should satisfy my fixation with these things for now! My husband gave me a funny
look about these items - only because we have more than enough blankets and cushions
in our house!
Unfortunately for hubbie, our move to a bigger house will only fuel the homemaker in me!

Daytime TV
Thursday, July 30, 2009
Anyone catch daytime tele? Occassionally I watch the morning shows and Oprah...and
Judge Judy...but tomorrow I will be keeping a close eye on New Idea TV. It airs every
weekday on Channel 7 from 3pm to 3.30pm. Tomorrow's episode includes a children's
fashion parade and apparently our 'Owl Dress' will be featured! This will be a first for us
(on tv), how exciting!

After some tips from Tina, a lick of paint, a bit of rubbing with sand paper (to give that
worn vintage look), a new cushion and hey presto! A new chair for Ivy. Not all that fancy,
but I am pretty happy with the results. Ivy gave it a test run and nearly knocked herself
out...I think she liked it a bit too much.

Somebody's turning 2!
Friday, August 28, 2009
My little bundle is turning 2 very soon. I
can't believe how time flies like that. Ivy
shares her birthday with Callum, the son of
one of my oldest friends. Callum and Ivy
were born days apart - they shared the
same birth centre and midwife! Callum's
mum and I are always joking about an
arranged marriage...so I guess it isn't
surprising to our friends that we have
decided to celebrate their birthdays with a
joint party. Also, with our house move, it
makes more sense for us to have it at
someone else's place :)
Invites
Included in the goodie bags for the kids will be colouring-in books and crayons
I bought a couple of these from My Messy Room. It is from a company in Denmark called
Rice. You should check out Rice's website - my oh my - so many funky products. An
inspirational story too.
This is the outfit I have purchased for Ivy. The dress and vest are from Australian online
shop Little Brown Mouse. The quality is superb!
I also bought some cups and plates from Sambellina. The party is still a few weeks away
64
but I will be sure to post photos then.

Meet...Olive's friend Pop!
Wednesday, September 02, 2009
If you haven't heard of this children's wear label yet, I assure you, you will. Olive's friend
Pop is a beautiful collection of vintage-inspired clothing for little girls also known as
'nostalgic playwear'. Established by two Aussie friends, with little girls of their own, this
duo has already created a buzz - just check out their facebook page. For the debut range
next winter, I have picked out my favourites including the 'Violet' overalls, 'Ethel' pinafore
and 'Meg' winter bonnet. All of these adorable garments are made to be played in. They
are produced with beautiful, but wearable, durable fabrics...definitely heirloom pieces.
On the move
Sunday, September 06, 2009
Just letting you know that we are moving house and therefore my use of the internet will
be limited for a while - I guess it will be determined by how often I can get to the internet
cafe or if our wireless works. Since we have to wait for the settlement of the new place
and then spend some time doing renovations, my sporadic presence could last for
several weeks/months. Who knows! Anyone wanting to contact Ivy Designs by phone
can do so on 0413774922 (Aust) or +6143774922 (O/S). Until next time, take care
everyone xox P.S I will definitely let you know when the summer range is available -
soon!

Birthday girl
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
My little sweetheart turned 2 today. Time seems to pass so quickly when you have a
child - they grow up so fast...reminding me that I am ageing quickly too! I definitely have
more grey hairs than I did two years ago :) We spent the day at the zoo today. It was a
great day out, we had such fun. We have Ivy's party this weekend. Below is a photo of
hubbie holding Ivy on her birth-day. Posted by ivy designs at 10:19PM (+10:00)

Last weekend we celebrated Ivy's 2nd birthday with the ever-popular cowgirl/cowboy
theme (joint party with a close friend). Everything went accordingly - lots of yummy food,
happy kids and everyone (including adults) dressed up in their best "western" outfit.
Luckily by the time we had the party in the afternoon the 2nd dust storm to hit Sydney
had subsided but it was terribly windy...still, the kids didn't seem to notice and Ivy spent
most of the time hiding in a tee pee anyway! Unfortunately my camera died that day (RIP)
so I only have a few photos kindly sent to me by friends.
I was constantly asked what I bought Ivy for her birthday. Well, I used Ivy's birthday as an
excuse to buy a lot of things! I am also in the middle of refurbishing an old writing desk I
picked up from Vinnies. Besides from the Tiny Concept doll, my favourite purchase for Ivy
is this Belle and Boo print (similar to an illustration done for our summer range, to be
revealed).
We already own a few Belle and Boo prints but when I saw this one, I just had to have it!
Not only is it an enchanting and amazingly detailed illustration, it also has a touching
story behind it. Mandy from Belle and Boo created the illustration for the talented
photographer Sheye Rosemeyer after the passing of her beloved daughter, Ava. You can
read about it here. The illustration also struck a cord with me as our current summer
range (launching this weekend) is all about tea parties. Incidently, Sheye also has
another gorgeous daughter named Ivy! I thought all these similarities were uncanny.
Ivy received lots of beautiful gifts (especially from her family in the UK) but I would like to
say a special thank you to a wonderful and loyal customer, Jen from Melbourne. Your gift
was such a lovely surprise. We were very impressed that you managed to choose our
favourite piece from Thula Thula's new range - the white Tulip Shorts. Thanks also to
Naomi from Thula Thula for the special dress you made for Ivy, another lovely surprise.
Thank you xox

Our new summer range has been delivered to most retailers now, so the stock will start
appearing on their shelves in the next week or two. You can view the entire collection on
our website and purchase directly from us here. Remember stock is limited!
This season the theme is Tea Parties. We had a series of adorable illustrations done for
us last year, which now appears on some of our garments. The illustrations are all
encompassing, also appearing on our website, marketing material and other accessories
to come. You may notice that there is a bit of animation happening on our homepage - so
sweet! Thank you to Justin Hevey and Megan Tucker for creating it and making it all
work. We love it.
A big thank you to all our gorgeous little models and their mummies too.
During the design process we had this cute poem written for us by Joanna Riche. It
helped to keep us inspired!
Come to the garden,
Sit with your friends,
Chase all the fairies,
To the rainbows end.
Put on your dresses,
The Party is here,
Time to be happy,
With Laughter and cheer.
Drink crystal bubble,
From lemonade fountains
With pink fairy cakes,
And marshmallow mountains.
The birds from the trees,
They all will join in,
And sing their songs loudly,
70 For you to hear ring.
So come to the garden,
Come and have fun,
Dance and be silly,
Under the sun.
We are thrilled to have the following new stockists on board for summer. Please contact
the individual shop in regards to what stock they hold.
Above are two items that you can only buy directly from us...the illustrated singlets.
