Indonesia is a land in the Far East where the sun shines brightly almost all year long, and
is home to much cultural diversity. And to say that it is rich with natural beauty is surely an
understatement from hidden pristine beaches to hectares of rice elds, from lush jungles

of wisdom and now I wear that particular salutation

Its easy for a newly arrived resident to don a pair of
rose-colored glasses and gaze through those tinted lenses
at this strange new world, seeing only the things they
want to see. Its not perfect here to be sure, as no place
anywhere can attain that lofty status. I battle with the
learning of a new language, I struggle to make sense of
what should be simple, straightforward paperwork, and
along the way I learn to have innite patience.
Should I stumble when confronted with what seems to
be an insurmountable problem, a few locals will gather,
then a few more, and a long chat will ensue. And with
smiles all around, they will look at me and say, Dont
worry. Semua bisa diatur.

more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most
hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali
Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms,
but not gastro-related infections. A fever along
with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed
antibiotics.
Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic
drinks under various brand names are widely
available and are known to replenish body
hydration and replace uids. For discomfort,
diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea;
avoid fruits and spicy foods.
Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue
fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas.
Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not
required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions
easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them
immediately.
Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit
before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at
reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe.
Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun.
Use high SPF sunblock and a hat.
AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases
are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers
have multiple partners from around the world.
They are not checked for sexually transmitted
diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms,
available over the counter at pharmacies.
