Brief Summary of Unit (including curricular context and unit goals):

Focus: Money, Linear Measurement, Weight/Mass, and Volume. Students will


learn and understand the value of different coins (Pennies, nickels dimes, and
quarters) and the symbols that represent them (cent (), dollar ($), and decimal
point (.)) along with other units of measurement: length, weight, volume, time,
day, date, and temperature. Students will also learn how to use a calendar,
thermometer, and a scale.

Unit Title: ___(SOL 2.10-14) Measurement, focusing on money, linear measurement, weight/mass, and volume____
Established Goals (cite specific VA SOL):
Students will be able to count and compare a collection of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters whose total value is $2.00
or less; and correctly use the cent symbol (), dollar symbol ($), and decimal point (.). The students will estimate and
measure. Students will estimate and measure: length to the nearest centimeter and inch; weight/mass of objects in
pounds/ounces and kilograms/grams, using a scale; and liquid volume in cups, pints, quarts, gallons, and liters. Students
will tell and write time to the nearest five minutes, using analog and digital clocks.
Students will be able to determine past and future days of the week and identify specific days and dates on a given
calendar. Students will read the temperature on a Celsius and/or Fahrenheit thermometer to the nearest 10 degrees.
Understandings: Students will understand

Appropriate units of measurement based on the


characteristics of what is being measured: (length,
weight, volume, time, day, date, and temperature)

Also building on the previous, how to communicate what is


being measured: (temperature, cents, dollars, grams,
pounds, liters, hours, minutes, days of the week, and
dates on a calendar.

Essential Questions:

Allowing the children help at the super market


paying attention to money and volume of items.
Helping children to be mindful of clocks around the
house and their significance.

Differentiate between different coins because of


value and size and be able to correctly count totals
up to two dollars.
Properly use basic financial symbols: (), ($), & (.).
Estimate and measure lengths, weights, masses
(in centimeters, inches, pounds, ounces,
kilograms, and grams) and liquid volume (in cups,
pints, quarts, gallons, and liters) using the proper
measuring tools: rulers, yard stick, scale,
measuring cups, etc.
Accurately identify and document to the closest
five minute the current time and other times
presented.
Identify days of the week, along with the current,
past, and future days of the week, as well as days
and dates on a calendar.
Use Celsius and Fahrenheit thermometers to
identify the current temperature and others
presented to the nearest 10 degrees.

Allowing the children to help with recipes and


cooking, paying attention to certain measurements

Other Evidence:

Grasp Model Students will write a letter to an

imaginary friend that is planning a visit from


San Francisco to Virginia Beach. The letter
will demonstrate their understanding of
measurements.
Mr. Gallon Robot Students cut out volume
units and glue together to make what looks like
a robot. Each limb represents the proper
amount of units in each of the previous section
of the limb.

Test this is the unit ending assessment, ten


questions that cover all the major sections of
measurement that the class went over.
Pre-assessment Tools
Corners (Rutherford, 2012, p. 90). This
allows students to share with their
classmates what they already understand
about the topic. Students come up with
what they already think about a subject
and are instructed to move to a corner or a
part of the room where likeminded
classmates will also meet.
Graffiti (Rutherford, 2012, p. 92). This
allows student to work in groups to figure
out word problems that are placed around
the room before they have a chance to
learn how to solve such problems.

Student Self-Assessment and Reflection

Consensus Testing (Rutherford, 2012, p. 160). This assessment allows students to make their
own test and share it with a group of students and come to a consensus of the answers.

demonstrate what they learned that was not summative-ly assessed.
