COURSEDESCRIPTION
FMD307.Studentswillbeintroducedtothesoftwareenvironmentlearningtheskillsneededtocreateillustrations
usingvectortoolsinAdobeIllustrator,withinthecontextofgarmentdesignandconstruction,surfacetextilesand
fashiongraphics.Studentswillcreatesamples(calledLinesheets)oftheirworkthatwillbecomepartoftheir
portfolio.
PrimaryemphasiswillbeontheuseofAdobeIllustrator(Ai)software.AdobePhotoshop(Ps)softwarewillalsobe
covered.
Prerequisite:FMD210withgradeofCorbetter.
Studentsshouldhavebasiccomputerskills,includingtheuseoftheinternet,email,scanning,printingandusing
flashdrivestosaveandsharefilesanddocuments.
COURSEOVERVIEW
1. UnderstandbasicuseofIllustratorandPhotoshopasusedbytheTextileandClothingindustries.
2. DevelopandapplybasicCADskillstocreateafashiondesignportfolioincludingdigitalflats,patternrepeats
andpresentationboards.
3. LearnhowtocreateTechPacksusedintheapparelindustry.
OBJECTIVES
Havingcompletedthiscoursethestudentwillbeableto:
1. DrawflatsketchesofgarmentsusingAdobeIllustrator
2. CreateprofessionalLinesheets
3. WorkoncontemporaryFashionIllustrationsofFashionCroquis
4. Renderdrawingswithcolourandfabricpatterns
ATTENDANCEPOLICY
Classattendanceandparticipationareessentialtoyoursuccessinthiscourseandmasteringcoursecontent.This
coursebuildsontheconceptsasthesemesterprogresses.Studentsareexpectedtolearnandrememberthe
conceptsdiscussedeachweekinclass.Absencefromtheclasswillnegativelyimpactyoursuccessinindividual
activitiesandprojects.Ifyouareabsentduetoexceptionalcircumstancesthendocumentationmustbeprovided
(examplesofsuchcircumstancesprearrangedparticipationinUniversitysanctionedactivitiesandprograms,
personalandfamilyillnesses)
Asintheworkplace,youmustbeontime.Youareexpectedtoremainintheclassuntilclasshasended.Leaving
theclassroombeforetheendoftheclassisdisruptive.Ifastudentabsolutelyneedstodoso,he/sheshouldobtain
permissionbeforeoratthebeginningoftheclass.
Incircumstancesofearlycompletedinclassassignmentsyoumustnotifymeaboutthesame,submitassignment
totheBlackboardandaskpermissiontoleavetheclassroom.
Attendancewillbetakenatthebeginningofeveryclasssession.Asignupsheetwillbeutilizedforeachclassand
itwillbeyourresponsibilitytomakecertainthatyouappropriatelyidentifyyourattendance.
Ifyoumissedclass,youareresponsibleforobtainingclassnotes,assignments,announcementsandhandoutsfrom
aresponsiblecolleagueBEFOREthenextclassinordertoprepareforitandmeetassignmentdeadlines.Inclass
assignmentsorquizzesmaynotbemadeup.
Thepolicyonmissedclassesistoalloweachstudentthreeabsences,noquestionsasked,nopenalty.Allfurther
absencesoverthislimitwillreducethestudentsoverallgrade.Iwilltake1%offofyourtotalgradeforevery
subsequentunexcusedabsence.Studentswithexcessivenumberofabsencesareatrisktofailthecourse.
Jobinterviews,cartrouble,etc.arenotexcused,sochooseyourthreeabsenceswisely.Habituallateness(and
leavingclassearlywithoutpermission),forwhateverreason,willbenotedasevidenceoflowcoursecommitment
andpenalized.

Dates/assignmentsmaybechangedatthediscretionoftheinstructortomeetobjectivesofthecourse.Blackboard
willbeasarepositoryforassignmentsandothercoursecontent.Blackboardwillbereviewedduringthefirstweekof
classtoclarifynavigation,coursecontent,andoverallexpectations.
LATEASSIGNMENTSARENOTACCEPTED.Itisanintegralpartofanyassignmentthatitbesubmittedina
timelymanner.Beingabsentorlateisnotanexcuseforsubmittingalateassignment.Pleasebeproactiveinyour
assignmentpreparationandadmission.

ELECTRONICS:
Noelectronicswillbeallowedtobepresentduringclasstime.
Thisincludescellphones,laptops,videoandaudiorecorders,blackberries,tablets,andnotebooks.Inotherwords
anythingnotpaperorawritingutensilwillnotbetoleratedduringclasstime.Ingeneral,thesedevicesdofacilitate
easeinmanyways,buthavebeenasourceofdistraction.Therefore,sometimewillbeallowedtoputthemaway.
IfIseeyouusingyourelectronicdevicesintheclass,Iwillgiveyouonewarning,secondtimeIseeyouusingyour
electronicdevicesintheclass,Illaskyoutoleavetheclassandmarkyouabsentfortheday.
Intestingsituations,theuseofcellphonesorsimilarcommunicationdevicesmayleadalsotoachargeofacademic

EVALUATION
Thestructureofthecoursewillincludesomelecture,butthemajorityoftheclasswillbehandsonlearningwith
instructorguidanceandexplanation.Shortassignmentswillbecompletedinoneortwoclasssessions.Allexams
andassignmentsmustbecompletedsatisfactoryinordertopassthecourse.
Studentswillreceivepointsforweeklyhomeassignments,classassignments,quizzesandfinalproject.Theideaor
visualstatementfortheseprojectswillbeconceivedanddesignedbyyou,butyourgradewillbebaseduponyour
skillfuluseoftheAiandPstoolsandmethodsasdesignatedbytheinstructor.Inmostcasesstudentsworkwillbe
submittedindigitalform.Thedigitalfileswillbeevaluatedwithregardtothecorrectuseoftoolsandmethodsand
alsotologicallydocumentorganizationoflayersandsublayersallofwhichmaynotbeseeninprintedform.
Hopefully,youcancoordinatetheseprojectsinawaythatmayenhanceyourportfolioorsupplementworkina
relatedclass.
