This curriculum package contains an outline of the Senior Kindergarten
program for the year 2015-2016. The program reflects the Ministry of
Education guidelines, board of education curriculum guides and schoolbased plans. This is intended to give you a clear picture of the learning
goals and expectations for your child. Please read through the subject
areas to familiarize yourself with the purposes and goals of the program.

Our Kindergarten Philosophy


The aim of our Kindergarten program is to provide a strong
foundation from which students can grow to become active participants in
life-long learning. Kindergarten children are building crucial foundational
skills in all areas such as social/emotional, language and communication,
motor control, citizenship in a community, creative expression and
academic skills and knowledge. The aim of the program is development of
the whole child. We will strive to help each child reach their full potential in
an environment that is challenging,

Our Literacy program comprises a significant part of our teaching day.
The overall goal is to create a balance literacy environment where children
will become independent writers and readers. This will be done through
read alouds, shared reading, reading centers, phonemic awareness, and
modeled/interactive writing.

- Uppercase and Lowercase letters
- Letter recognition and printing
- Vowels
- Rhyming words
- Blended letters and sounds
- Sight Vocabulary
- Initial and final consonants
Term 2

Journal writing
Spelling
Position understanding (ex: in, on, under)
Printing words and sentences

Term 3

Mathematics

Our Mathematics program stresses everyday mathematics and is


designed to help students learn a wide range of mathematical concepts as
well as insuring knowledge of basic mathematical skills. Students will
become actively involved with concrete objects such as pattern blocks,
cubes, and buttons. We are utilizing a math workbook and many lessons
will be conducted with hands-on manipulatives. Concepts will be examining
are:
Term 1
- Oral Counting, Number formation, Number
recognition
- Numerals 1-10 and Sorting
- Patterning
- Addition: Adding 0, 1, 2
- Subtracting: Subtracting 0, 1, 2

Term 2
- Addition and Subtraction: 1 to 10
- Numerals 1 to 20
- Geometry and Measurement
- 3D shapes
Term 3
- Numerals 1 to 100
- Addition and Subtraction 1 to 12
- Fractions and Time
- Problem Solving
- Money and Word Problems

Science and Personal and Social Development


The Kindergarten science program enables students to develop and
experience science concepts through inquiry and investigation. Activities
are designed to guide students to become effective problem-solvers. We
will also be having Scientist in School Workshops for the students. Topics
to be covered as follows:
Term 1
- Colours
- Parts of our body and myself
- Healthy food and winter

Term 2
- Living and non-living things
- Animal Kingdom (wild and farm animals and their habitats)

- Community helpers
- Simple machines
Term 3
- Transportation
- Sand and water
- Plants, insects, seasons
- Road Safety

Physical Education
In Physical Education students will learn healthy habits in
exercise while having fun through the use of games and other
activities. They will learn to take turns, develop gross motor skills,
follow directions, and work in a team or in a pair. Skills to be taught
are:
Term 1
- How to move in my environment
- Walk around, jump, run, hop, gallop etc...
- Demonstrate balance
- Toss and catch a ball
Term 2
- Cooperative/Team games
- Following rules
- Handling of equipment safely
- Outdoor activities
- Jogging and running
Term 3
- Bean bag games

Basketball
Hockey, Dodgeball
Follow the leader, use of a skipping rope
Jumping over height

Visual Arts

Art in Kindergarten allows for exploration and creative expression with


a variety of mediums. Art allows all students to feel success and
satisfaction with their own ideas and creations. Topics to be covered as
follows:
Term 1
- Recognize and describe simple patterns
- Name art material (clay, paint and crayons)
- Collage
- Mixing of colors
- Free hand painting
Term 2
- Creative expression
- Enact stories from their own culture and other cultures
- Play the parts of characters in drama
- Paper folding
- 3D shapes
- Nursery rhymes
Term 3
- Make preparations for performances
- Make a stage for puppet
- Puppet making
- String painting
- Blow painting

Islamic Studies
Aside from the curriculum, we will be teaching Islamic Studies to the
students daily. The four strands are Aqeedah, Akhlaaq, Fiqh and Adab, and
Quranic Studies. Areas of concentration are as follows:
Term 1
- Identity of self as a Muslim
- Development of Islamic values, behaviour, ideas and moral practices
- Surah Fatiha with memorized meaning
- Prophet Adam (A.S), Ramadan
Term 2
- Duties of a Muslim
- Surah Iqlas, Surah Naas
- Prophet Nuh (A.S,) Prophet Ibrahim (A.S)
- Duas
Term 3
- Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
- Prophet Hud (A.S)
- Surah Falaq, Surah Kafirun

Visit the library and check out books on a regular basis
Invest in educational games that emphasize literacy and numeracy
Practice making words with magnetic letters (cat, mug, dad)
Practice writing with your child
