After calculating the feature based on the points, the feature size and / or lacation is defined by adding or subtracting the radius of the stylus tip. This is called probe compensation — For example: 3 or more points are taken on the wall of an inside cylinder. A circle will be calculated through the center of the stylus tip. The diameter of the tip is then added to define the size, - Circles, Cylinders, Spheres, etc. (Round features) are easy, the stylus tip diameter is added or subtracted from the feature to determine the size — Lines, Planes (Flat features) are easy, probe compensation is made at 90° to the plane and at 90° to the line in the projection plane. To determine the location of a single point, the software must know in which direction to add or subtract the stylus tip radius.
