THE LUMINOUS MYSTERIES

I – The Baptism of Jesus

JOHN: Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Pave way for the Lord is coming.
PERSON: Then, are you Christ?
JOHN: You hoard of snakes. Someone will come who is greater than I am. That I am not even
worthy to carry his sandals. I baptize you with water yet he will baptize you with the holy spirit
and with eternal fire.
(Jesus walks towards John)
JESUS: John, I need to be baptized.
JOHN: I ought to be baptized by you and yet you have come to me.
JESUS: Let it be so for now. For in this way we shall do all that God requires.
JOHN: Come, my Lord.
(John baptizes Jesus. Jesus came out of the water and a dove descended from the heaven.)
GOD: This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased.

II – The Wedding in Cana

(Everybody is busy at the wedding. Mary overheard the conversation of the 2 servants)
SERVANT 1: We ran out of wine.
SERVANT 2: Let us seek for more before the in charge of the feast finds out about it.
(Mary went to Jesus.)
MARY: They ran out of wine.
JESUS: You must not tell me what to do. My time has not yet come.
(Mary went to the servants)
Mary: Do whatever he tells you.
JESUS: Fill this jar with water.
(The servant fill the jar with water.)
JESUS: Now draw some water out and take it to the man in charge of the feast.
(The servant went to the man in charge.)
SERVANT 1: My Lord.
MAN IN CHARGE: (drinks the wine) Hmmmm. (approaches the bridegroom) Everyone else serves
the best wine first, and after the guests have drunk a lot, he serves the ordinary wine. But you
have kept the best wine until now!
(Mary and Jesus were smiling while observing the man in charge and the bridegroom.)

III – The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God

(Jesus was talking to an audience)
JESUS: The right time has come and the Kingdom of Heaven is near! Turn away from your sins
and believe the good news.
NARRATOR: Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in the Synagogues, preaching the good news
about the Kingdom, and healing people who had all kinds of disease and sickness. The news
about him spread through the whole country of Syria, so that people brought him all those who
were sick, suffering from all kinds of diseases and disorders: people with demons, and epileptics
and paralytics – and Jesus healed them all.

IV – The Transfiguration
NARRATOR: Jesus took with him Peter, James and John and led them up a high mountain, where
they were alone.
(Jesus become shining white and was talking to Moses and Elijah.)
PETER: My Lord, let us stay here! We will make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one
for Elijah.
(fade to black)
(flash and voice over) GOD: This is my own dear Son – listen to him!

V – The Last Supper

JESUS: I have wanted so much to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I
will never eat it until it is given its full meaning in the Kingdom of God
(Jesus took a cup)
JESUS: Take this and share it among yourselves. I tell that from now on I will not drink this wine
until the Kingdom of God comes.
(Jesus puts down the cup and takes a piece of bread)
JESUS: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.
(Jesus broke the bread and gave it to his disciples. Then, he took the cup.)
JESUS: This cup is God’s new covenant sealed with my blood, which is poured out for you.

In Marialis Cultus (1974), Pope Paul VI proposed principles for the renewal of Marian devotion,
speaking at length on the Rosary. Since that time, practical suggestions have come from a
number of groups.

The German Liturgical Institute was eventually asked its opinion about instituting a fourth series
of Rosary mysteries, The Public Life of Jesus. A Marian group in Leutsdorf, Germany then
requested permission to officially institute a fourth series of mysteries that had been suggested
by Rev. Benno Mikocki of Vienna, the head of the Rosary/Reparation Way of the Cross
movement.

The letter of the Liturgical Institute noted that an attempt had been made to promote these
mysteries over twenty years ago in the national German prayerbook, Gotteslob. This attempt
had found little echo from the people. The letter indicated that such devotions have to come
from among the people rather than "from the top down." Dr. Elmar Nubold, director of the
Liturgical Institute, commented that the three sets of mysteries, with their concise formulations,
had proven effective over the years. Nevertheless, new suggestions should be taken into
account. Rev. Josef Schultheiss concluded from the Liturgical Institute's response that it was now
up to the individual communities and movements to do what they could to further this intention
in order to achieve their aim over a longer period of time.

In Rosarium Virginis Mariae (2002), John Paul II proposed the Luminous mysteries below as an
"addition to the traditional pattern." (RVM, 19)
The mysteries of light are placed between the Joyful and sorrowful mysteries. Each one of the
Luminous mysteries sheds light on an important aspect of Christ's mission: He is son of the
Father, the miracle worker, announcer of the Kingdom, the transfigured Son of god, and living
bread or Eucharistic presence. He is God's light for this world. These new mysteries are
extensively treated in John Paul II's letter on the rosary.
