Lesson 3 - Online Communication

Starter What is an online community?-

An online community is a virtual community whose

members interact with each other primarily via the Internet. Those who wish to be a part of an online
community usually have to become a member via a specific site.
1. Match the following information exchanges to their correct descriptions.

Web logs
(blogs)
Microblogging
sites

Wikis

Chatrooms

These are sites which allows users to create and exchange

really short text entries. A popular example of this type of
site is Twitter.
These are websites that provide information that visitors
to the site can extend and edit. They allow users to share
information and are useful for research. The best-known
example of a wiki is Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia
that can be updated by contributors.
These are frequently updated online journals with diarylike entries which allow people to express their thoughts
and feelings and give details of their daily activities.
Typically, a blog includes text, photos and sometimes
video.
Online communication within communities is sometimes
referred to as chat. Some of the large interactive
communities where people take part in the same
conversation or type of chat at the same time are known
as chatrooms.

2. Research and write a short description for each of the following key terms:

Electronic mail (e-mail)

Short for electronic mail, e-mail or email is text messages that may contain files, images, or
other attachments sent through a network to a specified individual or group of individuals.
The first e-mail was sent by Ray Tomlinson in 1971.
Instant messaging (chat)
Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat which offers real-time text transmission over the
Internet. A LAN messenger operates in a similar way over a local area network. Short messages
are typically transmitted bi-directionally between two parties, when each user chooses to
complete a thought and select "send".
Newsgroup
a forum on the Usenet service for the discussion of a particular topic.
Social networking
the use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people
with similar interests to oneself.

Blogs
a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in
an informal or conversational style

Vlogs / Podcast
a blog in which the postings are primarily in video form.

3. From discovering various online communications that are used online, what do you use?
I use twitter , snapchat and also facebook.
4. What are the implications of online communication? Think about the positive and negative
aspects.
Positive:
You can talk to many people that you might not see any more .
Negative:
You might have personal things and people could hack you
5. What are the client and server roles required to support instant messaging?
Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat which offers real-time text transmission over the Internet. A LAN
messenger operates in a similar way over a local area network. Short messages are typically transmitted bidirectionally between two parties, when each user chooses to complete a thought and select "send". Some IM
applications can use push technology to provide real-time text, which transmits messages character by character,
as they are composed. More advanced instant messaging can add file transfer, clickable hyperlinks, Voice over IP,
or video chat.
6. What does VoIP stand for?

Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice
communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.
Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband
telephony, and broadband phone service.
7. What are the limitations of VoIP?
Not all VOIP services offer full integration with the current Enhanced 911 (or E-911) service.
Because a VOIP number can be physically located, some emergency services may not have
address information for a 911 call placed from a VOIP number. This is similar in many ways to 911
limitations on cell phones, when the exact location of the phone is not known. Some VOIP
providers now offer an option to associate a physical address with a phone number. That address
is transmitted to emergency services when a call to 911 is placed from the VOIP number.

8. What are the benefits of VoIP?

Cost savings. The most attractive feature of VoIP is its cost-saving potential. When we move away
from public switched telephone networks, long-distance phone calls become inexpensive. Instead
of being processed across conventional commercial telecommunications line configurations, voice
traffic travels on the Internet or over private data network lines. For the enterprise, VoIP reduces
cost for equipment, lines, manpower, and maintenance. All of an organization's voice and data
traffic is integrated into one physical network, bypassing the need for separate PBX tie lines.
Although there is a significant initial setup cost, significant net savings can result from managing
only one network and not needing to sustain a legacy telephony system in an increasingly digital
and data-centered world. Also, the network administrator's burden may be lessened as they can
now focus on a single network. There is no longer a need for several teams to manage a data
network and another to manage a voice network. For consumers, VoIP reduces the charge of
subscription or usage, especially for long distance and international calls.
