TIP

Get Moisture
from Products

When the temperature

drops, the moisture in the
air disappears faster than your summer tan, and that wreaks havoc on
your hair. Talk to a hair stylist about
your concerns, suggests Jamie Suarez,
creative director at Regis Salons, and
ask for targeted treatments. During your in-salon treatment, Suarez
recommends Designline Mend the
Ends End Sealer, which contains silk
proteins, to strengthen and protect
hair, and agave sap, to hydrate and
guard hair from heat and dryness.
To keep moisture defense up at
home, try hair oil. Destress Express
Hair and Body Treatment Oil by
Intelligent Nutrients restores
moisture, conditions, and soothes
distressed strands. And you can use it
on your body, too; its formulated with
therapeutic calming oils. Less is more
when it comes to hair oilone to

three drops, depending on length and

volume, should be enough.
For men with dry scalps, Jack
Black Wax Pomade for men (find it at
MartinPatrick 3) combines a smart
blend of oils to fight the bacteria
caused by scratching, and reduce
scalp irritation, while the grapefruit
peel oil adds shine and a citrus scent.

Vivid Colors,
Mid Lengths

For color, vivid hues in

hair strands like yellows,
blues, violets, and fuschiaand
even neon colors that glow in the
darkare trendy, says Marilyn Aase,
education and sales director at
Simonsons Salon. If youre not
quite that adventurous, Aase recommends sticking to rich mahogany,
deep brunette, wheat/barley
blondes, and rusty reds. They are
popular transitional colors that
complement the depth and intensity
of fall wardrobes.
For cuts, Aase says womens midlength hair is on trend this falladd
extensions if you need a quick boost.
Men should ask for the pompadour
cut: longer on top, fading to shorter
at the nape.

Pompadour or not, chic hair

styling is always trendy. Rub a
nickel-sized amount of Jack Black
Wax Pomade ($22) into hair
starting at the sides and moving
toward the top for a sexy tousled
look thatll last for hours.

TIP

Treat the Sins

of Summer

Its no secret winter is

harsh on skin. Our outermost layer of skin is assaulted by
the lack of moisture, resulting in dry,
chapped, or flaky skin, says Suzanne
Flickinger, esthetician/MBA at Zel
Skin & Laser Specialists. But fall
and winter are also great
times for skin maintenance
services. [Fall and winter
are] when we often treat
the sins of summer: the
extra redness, pigment,
and wrinkles our patients
incur from the sun, says
Flickinger. We use laser
treatments to address these
issues, as well as laser hair
and tattoo removal, which
are safer to perform in the
fall when patients have less
sun exposure.
Waiting for winter to treat skin
issues has sound logic. Many
laser and light treatments like BBL
(BroadBand Light) work best when
the skin is as light as possible, says
Caleb Creswell, dermatologist at
Dermatology Specialists PA. BBL
uses light energy to zap skin cells,
generating more collagen to correct
MD Complete NonIrritating Pro Peel is simple
to use at home and keeps
skin clean, clear, and
glowing ($20).

sun damage, age spots, and other

conditions. If you want to skip the
lasers and light treatments, try a
series of traditional chemical peels.
Peeling increases exfoliation by
removing damaged skin cells, which
boosts hydration and overall appearance of the skin, says Melissa Davis,
esthetician at Bella on the Bay.

At-Home Peels

More people are buying at-home skin peels,

but theyre not all created
equal. Flickinger recommends using
the MD Complete Non-Irritating
Pro Peel at home: This $20 gem can
mimic Zels professional peels at a
mere fraction of the cost, she says.
I recommend it for my patients in
between professional treatments.
Peels unclog pores and exfoliate
skin, which help stave off acne and
even out skin tone. Bonus: Results
are immediate.

TIP

Nourish
Your Nails

You cant always wear

gloves over those brittle
nails. Use the season as an excuse
to get extra manicures, like the
45-minute signature manicure at Ivy
Spa Club, which includes a hand
and arm massage, cuticle trimming,
and a shape and polish. (Theyve got
manicures designed for men, too.)
Dont forget that your feet also
take a beating. Reward them with a
45- or 60-minute pedicure. While
its good to get periodic manis and
pedis (theres even a hashtag
#manimonday), routine at-home
maintenance is just as important,
and sometimes just as therapeutic.
At Cos Bar, you can stock up on
supplies like Deborah Lippmann
cuticle oil ($20), which nourishes
dry skin and keeps manicures
looking fresh for weeks.

Rich Nail
Color

Polish your look with a

bold color. Matte, sheen,
and shimmery are all in style. Look
for rich hues like one from Zoyas
12-piece fall collection found at
Studio 411. Or pamper yourself with
a pedicure. The best way to pedicure in colder months is shellac because you can immediately put your
shoes on without ruining perfectly
polished toes, says Aase. There are
many colors, but technicians can also
customize a shade.

by Zoya ($9
